There's a little bit of history to the fourth EDH deck that I made. It initially started as Phage and 99 swamps. It was going to be the deck i loaned to people when they wanted to play. (I know i'm a jerk).
I then started using it as a test against the efficiency of my other EDH decks; in so much that if the other deck could win before phage was cast that deck won, otherwise phage won. When i started using the deck like that, I added in cards like dark ritual, sol ring, mana crypt, etc.
I had fun casting Phage and wanted to do more with it. So i found all the ways I could to cheat her into play and not lose and created a deck based on that. As it became more competitive and exsanguinate came out, i added that and drain life cards to give it alternate win cons.
Ways to Successfully Cast Phage
Torpor Orb: Torpor orb prevents Phage's trigger from going off, therefore it will never check if you cast Phage from hand. Platinum Angel: If you can't lose the game, you can't lose to Phage's trigger. Sundial of the Infinite: For one more mana, you can end your turn in response to Phage's trigger. Dash Hopes, Nether Void, Thrull Wizard, Withering Boon + Return card from GY to hand/top of library: Counter Phage when you cast her from the command zone. Then use another effect to return Phage to your hand or to the top of library so you can draw her. Then cast like normal. This method is very convoluted. Also runs the risk of her coming into play via living death or something similar. Endless Whispers + Abyssal Persecutor: Let Abyssal Persecutor die and use the trigger from Endless Whispers give it to an opponent. Then cast Phage, since an opponent controls Abyssal Persecutor, you cannot lose.
I've seen people play Phage as their commander by countering her when you cast her from the command zone. Then returning her from the graveyard to your hand.
While there are many black cards that can get Phage from your graveyard to your hand, there are only a few black spells to counter her when you cast her.
removed kozilek for rise of the dark realms. I may switch this back, but i wanted to test the new shiny m14 card!
removed wound reflection and added in lightning greaves. Typically, if the deck wins it is because of a huge exsaguinate that is lethal and not half lethal. Or phage hits play and kills someone. lightning greaves pushes the phage win and gives protection, so worth using.
removed praetor's grasp and added liliana of the veil. new legend rule for walkers means running all 3 liliana's isn't all that bad. praetor's usually was just search deck for target sol ring anyways, so liliana of the veil seems much more on theme.
also, retooled the decklist to be in alphabetical order under each card type section for ease of reading/making changes.
although the free kill spell was nice, having the ability to deal with walkers is just better. we have enough creature kills that we can move this spell this way.
hythonia is a cool mythic, doesn't really add much to the deck, but does work at instant speed, which the deck has been lacking.
removing the tutor, we have a good amount of tutors and this one is just really pricy.
other considerations - read the bones. I thought about this over promise of power. also considered erebos, god of the dead over promise of power. I think i may make that switch if I come across an erebos. however, the slow painful draw vs the instant ouch may still be better.
also, changed the decklist to contain fetches. In addition, when I actually got rise of the dark realms, I never cut kozilek, I ended up cutting mikaeus the unhallowed; because he has very bad interactions with phage. So i fixed that in the OP.
What do you find your liliana's bring to the table (besides dark realms, that ones pretty easy to figure out ;p). I realize LotV is powerful, but is it really the right choice in a phage deck? Genuinely curious.

Liliana vess is basically a high mana costed vampiric tutor that if the stars align I can get a second use out of.
liliana of the veil was a recent addition with the new legend rule. I also traded for one that a friend altered but can't use in tournaments because it's a nude liliana. I guess I didn't have a better home for it than this deck. You're right, her abilities don't resonate well with what the deck is trying to do.

nothing from the new set spoke up and said add me! i thought about fated return, but for the mana i'd rather the above cards. I didn't think instant speed was worth it here... besides we have geth.
ok so i suppose it was about time to add in nykthos, shrine to nyx. I took out forbidden orchard. I loved the fun forbidden orchard would provide, but it really didn't make any sense in the deck and i suppose i should make good card choices (even though it's phage).

While there are many black cards that can get Phage from your graveyard to your hand, there are only a few black spells to counter her when you cast her.
Dash Hopes, Thrull Wizard, and Withering Boon are the only black counter spells I know of.

as far as fetches go, they give me a little more mileage out of sensei's divining top. if i pick up another crucible of worlds or rings of the brighthearth I would put either into the deck and get more value out of it. probably crucible over rings.
