First, I want to thank Obob for providing the inspiration for this deck. For the original decklist I just copied his list, but now have been slowly making changes of my own.
I thought I'd start my own thread instead of just constantly editing a post buried in his deck's thread.
The idea of the deck is that it has three win conditions - you can either win by general damage with Selenia, or you win by reducing your own life total down far enough that you can then switch it with an opponent's higher life total and easily win after that. Since you have so many ways to ping yourself down, you can also win with Near-Death Experience.
It is definitely a multiplayer deck - it takes a little bit to get started, and it relies on keeping hate pointed away from itself. But once it gets going it is pretty good at keeping the board clear and itself safe.
As a note, after playing with this deck for a quite a while - be liberal with your wrath effects and removal! You have a lot of it, likely much more than any deck you will come across. If you are at all feeling threatened just blow up the board. It will rarely, if ever, be a wasted spell.
Thank you in advance for any comments you might have!
Sideboards are highly meta dependent, which is why I haven't provided one ... but here are great cards that didn't make the cut due to being highly meta dependent. Deadly Tempest - Excellent board clearer if you play with people who like to swarm Fated Retribution - Could be a useful wipe if the meta includes planeswalkers galore Radiant Purge - Excellent spot removal in the proper meta End Hostilities - If equipment sees a lot of use in your meta this is a great swap for Day of Judgement
Elspeth, Knight-Errant - OK planeswalker, but we really just want her ultimate. Her other two abilities don't add a whole lot for us. Syphon Mind - Fairly effective draw, but we have more efficient options Hellfire - A good boardwipe that fits into our life manipulation plans. The non-black clause both hurts and helps us. Its not an auto-include because if too many creaturs are out it can be incredibly dangerous for us. Ad Nauseam - More drawing, but like Hellfire the loss of life is too unpredictable - and the average CMC of the deck makes drawing more than a few cards possibly fatal, on average. Catastrophe - A good board wipe, and the option to hit lands can be useful. Its just a bit too expensive. Erebos, God of the Dead - Provides drawing (excellent), is indestructible (so our wipes don't hurt it), and limits opponents life gain. I'd almost say it was an auto include, but the life gain can actually work against us with our life reversal effects. Lashwrithe - a very solid buff for Selenia, but it is only worthwhile with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth out. If we add in more basic swamps it would go back in. Stoneforge Mystic - with Lashwrithe out there are only 4 equipment cards in the deck. With the addition of another equipment card it would be worthwhile to switch this back in place of Necrologia. Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts - A surprisingly good defensive option. Its a shame she's a creature (or rather that she has prot from creatures instead of indestructibility), because she's a great deterrent in multiplayer games.
Deathpact Angel - Incredibly thematic, and it would be the fourth white/black angel. However, its not too great. Magister of Worth - Thematic, but not up to par Angel of Despair - More thematic than Ashen Rider, but strictly worse Avacyn, Angel of Hope - More thematic than Myojin of Night's Reach, and perhaps better in 1v1. Crovax, Ascendant Hero - Thematic (Selenia's lover) and has a bounce. Out of all the Crovax options (Ascendant Evincar, Crovax the Cursed) he's probably the best ... however he's still not too great for us.
Current Considerations: Forcefield - Solid defense - it would go in if there was more room. Orbs of Warding - Good defense, would like to add in
More mana acceleration (Dreamstone Hedron, Thran Dynamo?) Armageddon, Cleansing, and similar - if I can cast this after a board wipe + a creature (usually selenia) its usually a win. Cleansing looks especially nice for the potential to ping us down in a controlled manner Angel's Grace - Good insurance card, and it has good synergy with several potential options (Hellfire, Ad Nauseam, Repay in Kind). Damnable Pact - Very strong: it can lower our life and give us cards (both potentially good things), or it can kill an opponent. However, it can suck up mana quickly Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger - very strong for spot removal Terminus - solid removal, though potentially expensive Exsanguinate - Can win games with enough mana Rout - Solid wrath
I'd like to add a Divine Intervention, only because I love the card. But it doesn't really fit ... sadly.
I'd also like to add a Shahrazad, just because its my favorite card ... but no point (and it doesn't really fit ... and its banned).
For the budget version I set a deck price limit of $100 using mtggoldfish.com. For the most part I was actually pretty pleased with how it turned out, though there are a few very important cards that I thought still need to be included.
My normal deck is valued at almost $2300 on mtggoldfish. However, about $1200 of that is the tutor package, with another $375 being all the various duals/special lands. After clearing those out it was pretty straightforward to narrow the list down.
I wasn't aware of Magister of Worth when I made the list, so I think I need to find a way to add that in.
In order of what I believe the priority is ... Debtors' Knell - This is great recursion, and very synergistic with our mass board wipes. Its only ~$7, and I am considering making room for it in the budget deck. I place this first as I might be able to get it in with only minor swapping necessary. Mirror Universe - A key card in the deck - my first pass of the budget deck I tried to keep it in ... but its $40, which is a huge percentage of the budget. This is key to include as a later addition. Crucible of Worlds - This allows for easy land recursion, and if we want to do more land destruction its very important. However its also around $50, which is half of the deck budget. Its a good later addition. Kor Haven - A solid defense land, which we need due to the lack of Moat (or Forcefield). Its only $7, so something thats not too bad to include later. Maze of Ith - A great defense land, which we need. Its ~$22 though, which is a huge percentage of the budget ... and its not as important as the other 'must-have's in this list.
As I'd like to play a rather unknown general for once, I am currently building my own version of Selenia. I really like Obob's and your lists for reference and ideas. I think you did a good job condensing the deck around the Dark Angel. So congratulations and thank you!
There's a couple of questions I have:
Why don't you run Sorin Markov? He works well into the life switching strategy. Also regarding that strategy, Repay in Kind seems an obvious inclusion. It's mana intensive, but gets everyone down to single digit life totals. So finishing people off should be easy from there.
You write about needing time to get started, so what about some more defense in the form of Ghostly Prison and Crackdown? These seem like viable inclusions. I'd probably take out Vedalken Orrery or Identity Crisis for either. Since I don't own a Moat I am considering running Humility instead, even though it shuts down Selenia as well. Would the deck pack enough punch to go all the way without her?
One last thing for now: you have Hallowed Burial listed under Recursion, it should be Board Removal though.
Looking forward to your arguments.

- A single spark of passion can change a man forever. -
I'm glad you like the deck! Its really more obob's than mine, so thanks should go to him.
Here are my thoughts on the cards you listed: Sorin Markov - His ult is definitely awesome, but his +2 runs a bit counter to our purposes (actively working against the life switch we want). If it was pay life to draw a card or something that would be much better. His -3 is great in edh (of course), but I'd rather use a Repay in Kind if I wanted to do that. Repay in Kind - Honestly, I just overlooked this card. That said, I think its a bit too risky for the deck. Other decks can output more damage faster than Selenia, so if everyone is low that is a race we lose (especially in multiplayer). Crackdown - too slow, creatures can still attack us at least once. Ghostly Prison - pretty good, I was considering the card but I couldn't find the room. Its a nice substitute if you're on a budget. It could certainly replace Moat. Humility - Not good for us. All of our creatures are in there for their abilities, and this shuts them all down. Selenia's bounce is especially important for the deck. We have very few creatures so we can easily be overwhelmed if it comes to that. If it is necessary for whatever reason in your meta I suppose you could include it.
Identity Crisis is very powerful, and one of the only ways we can deal with certain decks. Its definitely not a 'nice' card though, so I understand if you want to take it out. Veldeken Orrery is good for casting our life switching spells artifacts. Otherwise there is a good chance they get blown up before we can use them. Depending on yoru meta you may find that you don't need it, in which case feel free to replace it.
One thing with my list is that it makes no consideration for budget. There are quite a few pricey cards in there, so those are certainly easy candidates for replacement.
I've been thinking that Hellfire, while great, is a bit limited in too many ways.
1) Doesn't hit black creatures. While this means almost all of our creatures are safe, it could also miss a good number of opponent creatures as well.
2) May be fatal against token decks. Sometimes the loss of life will be more than acceptable, but against token decks there is a good chance of it killing you.
I think in the right meta the card will shine, but in general it'd be a 'sideboard' option.
Is there any room in this deck for Angel's Grace? It's an out to some infinite combos, and seems like it could be fun with life-total swapping. It might be too cute, but maybe it merits investigation.
Is there any room in this deck for Angel's Grace? It's an out to some infinite combos, and seems like it could be fun with life-total swapping. It might be too cute, but maybe it merits investigation.
Nice find! I think that could be very worthwhile, and makes Hellfire, Ad Nauseum and Repay in Kind more viable options. And of course it works well with a lot of the rest of the deck. Will definitely look into it.
Minor updates. Next revision will likely focus on increasing mana acceleration/playing with the mana-base. Given the removal of some of the more thematic cards I'd like to create a budget+thematic version of the deck, which should be completely do-able.
Hey glad to see others using my favorite Angel also. I currently have the primer on her on the site and would love to add your list as an additonal list for others to look at if you are alright with that. Otherwise right off the bat I have a few comments:
You seem like you could benefit from more and upgraded mana rocks. They are the main base of my deck and cards like Orzhov Cluestone have much better replacements like Commander's Sphere. But I can go into that more when I do my list update tomorrow and am spending a lot of time typing about Selenia.
More life adjusters such as City of Brass and Pristine talisman are key if you are pulling off the life swap shenanigans.
I saw your primer - I'm a big fan. Lich is always fun, though a bit too risky for me.
Thanks for catching Commander's Sphere! I don't know why I didn't make that substitution
City of Brass should probably have a place in the deck ... likely replacing Orzhov Basilica. Though I've found that too many pain lands can be problematic - the deck has so many expensive spells, it can lead to life-loss when I don't want to do it. Pristine talisman I find to be underwhelming - it works against the initial life-loss/switch I want, and if I later need to gain life the little 1 life pings are inconsequential.
I definitely agree about LD - I enjoy playing it, and Desolation Angel wins games for me. The trouble is figuring out what to take out for it. A tutor is a possibility ...
*Edit* Almost forgot - It'd be awesome if you linked me.
