I just can't seem to get away from playing stax in Esper colors. Whenever I play in any other color combination, I always feel like I'm missing out on something that Esper can do better:
White has the most efficient removal, bar none: Swords to Plowshares and Wrath of God effects for creatures, Return to Dust effects for artifacts and enchantments, and Armageddon effects for lands. White also brings artifact tutors to the table, which are always very nice to have in a stax list. When it comes to specifics, Humility is an absolute beating against many decks, Elspeth, Knight-Errant is a house, and Sun Titan can do the most work of any card in the deck, if graveyard hate isn't too plentiful.
Black also brings some key stax pieces to the party in the form of Braids, Cabal Minion for forced sacrificing, Bitterblossom for the best token production in the game, and Desolation for land hate. Oh, and let's not forget that black has the best tutors in the game. Permanent sources of draw like Phyrexian Arena and Dark Tutelage also shouldn't be underestimated in a stax list.
Blue is mostly here for counterspell backup, although what it has to offer in terms of stax pieces shouldn't be underestimated. Mana Vortex is in the list as another piece of land hate, but generally speaking I just like to run enough counters to ensure that once I have established a dominant board position that is going to grind my opponents into the ground, they can't go and bust it up with an Austere Command or something along those lines.
========================================
Now, I've been trying out this particular list with both Zur the Enchanter and Sharuum the Hegemon at the helm. Each has a particular set of strengths and weaknesses:
Zur is nice because he can come down early and tutor up a lot of your key enchantment-based stax pieces. I hate to run him out into counterspells or removal, though, and this list just isn't built to protect him, nor should it dedicate slots to doing so. He also hits like a wet noodle if unequipped or enchanted, and once again, taking up space with buffs isn't something this deck wants to do.
Sharuum is nice because she can come in late and bring back a lot of your key artifact-based stax pieces, which are bound to get removed over the course of the game. She also hits for a reasonable amount, if I end up needing to put some damage on someone. Her casting cost of 6, however, is on the high end of what I like to run in a stax list, and if she is removed she quickly becomes prohibitively costly to recast.
