I saw a similar concept of this deck when I played in an unfamiliar EDH group. Everyone else was running decks I’ve seen before, often times more than once with my regular playgroups. This deck was refreshing to watch and it added an element of novelty that EDH doesn’t normally see. After seeing it in action, I knew I had to build one for myself.
Playstyle
The playstyle of this EDH deck is highly unorthodox. It combines group hug and punisher (group slug) into what can only be described as chaos. To play this deck, you have to pretty much throw planning out the window; it’s not about looking for a specific card/combo to win but more so overloading each opponent and yourself. Winning isn’t even a priority in this deck. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a troll deck (though it could be if you wanted) but this EDH deck demands chaos. Dropping group hug then follow up suddenly with a board wipe, or reset the game with land destruction, or play the bully then quickly become the good guy. If there was one phrase to sum up the deck it would be “anything goes”
Why Malfegor?
You’d think that going for a popular group hug/slug commander like Kaervek, the merciless or Pheddagrif but Malfegor was the easy pick here. Sure he has a 6/6 flying body for 6 mana but it’s the effect that really puts him at the helm of this deck. Echoing the playstyle of the deck, Malfegor’s effect fits perfectly, he has the ability to suddenly wipe the board, and the cost for doing so is countered with the amount of draw that is featured in this deck. The fact that the command zone is accessible throughout the game makes Malfegor a powerful weapon in this deck because he can easily come out of nowhere or intimidate people into playing conservatively.
