Intro: I have to give a huge shout out to gelf's Animar Primer for providing the shell of this deck. A lot of the cards are from his suggestions. I think that I’ve tweaked it enough for my meta (and personal preference) to make it my own, but it’s basically a copy of his deck with some changes. Mainly, I took the focus off of Phychosis Crawler and then took out the Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Zealous Conscripts combo.
The deck plays pretty straight forward; Turn 1&2 is just land drops and if I'm lucky i'll drop a Sylvan Library, Worldly Tutor, Skullclamp or Ring of Kalonia. Turn 3 sees Animar and then it's drop mobs on the cheap for the rest of the game. My favorite thing this deck does is bounce. I love the versatility of being able to bounce my stuff OR theirs
Feel free to comment if you’d like; I take criticism and suggestions fairly well lol
Additional Morph creatures I'm thinking about trying to find a place for: Coral Trickster - For U, this gets around stubborn chumpblockers when I don't have a way to give Animar trample Echo Tracer - Another 2U bounce effect Nantuko Vigilante - Naturalize on a stick Riptide Survivor - Was thinking about replacing Sea Gate Oracle but I don't like the fact that you have to discard first... Root Elemental - I really like this card but it's really to clunky to consider Shaleskin Plower - Maze of Ith is very common in my meta and sometimes 5 mana isn't to expensive to blow one up Unblinking Bleb - Really only good if I decide to go super morph heavy Voidmage Apprentice - Counterspell on a stick but 4 mana seems a little high Woodcloaker - GG, Animar gets trample; could be great mid-late game.
I have an Animar deck that I love, but I think the big problem with it is I NEED lots of draw in order to keep the momentum going. Play creatures, drawn more, keep playing until I can swing massively. Primordial Sage and Soul of the Harvest are your allstars, which you already have, but I few that I've included in my deck to help it along are:
I know they seem underwhelming, but for me they are usually a 1 drop which nets me a card and a counter on Animar. I also like to use plenty of clone creatures which allow me to either have yet another Soul of the Harvest on the board, kill pesky commanders, or duplicate other utility creatures I have:
Bounce creatures are always good. I see you already have Man-o'-War and Shrieking Drake. I also have Dream Stalker in my deck. You might want to run it over Aether Adept. Yeah, you can only bounce your creatures, but the double blue is a lot less forgiving with Animar, and I find that most of the time I'm wanting to bounce my own creatures anyway, so I can replay them for their enter the battlefield effects and another counter on Animar.
Thanks for the replies, I'll do my best to address them real quick while on my break at work...
@Trabant777: I'm just going to quote gelf here,
Consecrated Sphinx - As with Future Sight, this is a great card advantage engine and also gets bonus points because it's a creature, but I don't include it because once the deck gets going your opponents may not get another draw step. It doesn't facilitate the combo at all and as such loses it's place in my version of the deck.
I may look to add it in later, but so far I've not found that I need it.
@Andrewgeddon:
but I few that I've included in my deck to help it along are:
Wall of Blossoms
Elvish Visionary
Wall of Blossoms seems like it could be ok. I like that it replaces itself in your hand for free while adding a counter to Animar but for the most part it's going to be worthless once you case it. This deck it at no shortage of chump blockers and I'm normally going to want to bounce something with a better ETB effect than drawing one card. I might consider putting it in eventually in place of Glimpse of Nature.
I also like to use plenty of clone creatures which allow me to either have yet another Soul of the Harvest on the board, kill pesky commanders, or duplicate other utility creatures
I don't think that the deck needs more clones; at this point Phyrexian Metamorph and Duplicant have filled that job well enough.
So far, I've not had any issue with the double blue in the adept's casting cost and the option it gives to boomerang one of their creatures if I need to is well worth the extra cost imo.
Brutalizer Exarch is Worldly Tutor on a stick, plus can tuck away those pesky enchantments / artifacts in a pinch.
The only reason that I don't run the brutalizer over the actual tutor is that turn 1-2, its nice to grab that Shrieking Drake or Alloy Myr for early pump or mana fixing. I think that the versatility of the exarch is awesome, but early game it's just a dead card
