Hey, My names Ben and I've played Magic for a long while now. I mostly play casual with my friends, usually EDH. Ever since I started playing I wanted to own a dragon deck so naturally when I started to play EDH, Scion was my first choice. I try to keep the dragon theme as much as possible while keeping the deck competitive, thought inducing, and fun...
This deck was built with the intent to have the right tool for the right job in every scenario. Krenko being a pain? Balefire or Scourge. Lands a pest? Numot. Opponent with a 20 card hand? Nicol Bolas. Giant creature hits the board? Block it with Keiga and take it! There are plenty of different small, yet powerful combos ranging in difficulty from Niv+Ophidian and Worldgorger Dragon+Animate dead to combos that I still haven't found. I'm constantly updating my deck so what you see is not necessarily what I want or what it will be in a few weeks/months. If you notice something I don't have please don't hesitate to make a suggestion. Enjoy!:D
Changes I'm looking to make as soon as I can get my hands on the cards..
-Three visits<<<<<Wood Elves
It's a better card overall and It keeps the Dragon theme. The less non-Dragon creatures the better.
-Sneak Attack<<<<<Quicksilver Amulet
Same 4 mana cost but if I play Scion turn 5 and he gets killed I can do more on turn 6 with a Sneak Attack than a Quicksilver. S.A. also feeds my GY for an early Living Death or Patriach's Bidding.
-Volrath's Stronghold<<<<<Forest
I have so much green production that the first land card to go should be my Forest. Aww shucks, I need another Nicol Bolas, too bad I already used him. Oh wait, I'll reload with Volrath's Stronghold!
-Skithyrix, the Blight Dragon<<<<<Kodama's Reach
My basic land searches aren't good in the deck, I only need one if that and Skithyrix woks wonders with Kessig. Kill spell targeting Scion? Change him to Skithyrix and Pay two to regenerate.
-Quicksilver Dragon<<<<<Mirari's Wake
Its another protection card. Bant Charm Scion? Nah I'll Pay 3 and Redirect Bant Charm at your general. Also Mirari's Wake is a 5 drop and I'd rather drop Scion not to mention double mana Isn't necessary for the deck
Coalition Relic<<<<<Demonic Collusion
Losing another 5 drop for a mana producer. Coalition relic is better that Mirari's Wake Bc it allows me to play Scion turn 4. Also, I dont need a 5 mana tutor, Scion is my 5 mana tutor...
Utvara Hellkite<<<<<Reap and Sow
Reap and sow is too slow at 4 mana and Utvara Hellkite is just silly with a few quick drops with a Sneak Attack or with an early Mass GY effect. He requires a board wipe or a swift kill spell or else the game gets out of hand
Memory's Journey<<<<<Mortify
Allows me to reload for another Scion trick or saves Important cards before a GY wipe. It was between Mortify and Terminate and I chose Mortify because my play group runs Zombie, Goblin, and Slivers all of which run regeneration. The 2 cost Is way better for the deck because I always try to leave 2 open for scion anyway, making it easier to disguise. If you don't use it at EOT use Scion as an Entomb
As I get the cards I'll change the deck list and mark which changes I've made.
Jivanmukta: I've got to hit my biggest threat first. Don't be upset, It's a compliment if anything
BlackVise: Glad you like the concept! Thanks for the suggestions, I like some more than others. The Imperial Hellkite seems kind of slow considering I have 3 or so Tutors, Scion to dump in the GY and Survival. I've been considering Kokusho but my playgroup is mostly General damage or infinite combo so the life total isn't usually an issue but I still find myself considering Kokusho. Yosei is a great defensive card but I've been looking at quicksilver dragon. It's worse in some scenarios but it gets around tuck cards like Chaos Warp and lets me tuck their general instead. Volrath's Shapeshifter is a very unique card. I've never considered it for the deck, unfortunately if its in play with scion and Scion becomes a legendary creature they would both die... But the potential with that card might outweigh that.. I might have to test it... 2 Balefire Dragons or two Dragon Tyrant would be sexy.
