Lord of Tresserhorn, my earliest Mt:G memory. I was in grade school and my friend had just introduced me to the game in which his father and older brothers all played. At the time just like any beginner i wanted to use the biggest fattest critter around to end games quick not considering how strategically viable they were and when i found LoT in his collection i was immediately interested, but not just because he was huge, but to ice the cake he could regenerate(not considering the drawbacks as well at the time, we played casual anyway)!? how awesome is that i thought to myself. after failing to be able to make him the house he looks like on paper i tossed the idea of ever using him for years to come.
Recently though, I've become bored with standard and have tried to expand more on my collection, get into other formats, and have taken more time to think about where i've come from in the past 11 years of playing magic. It all started with this "Good Buddy" Lord of Tresserhorn. The deck building challenges he raises, and the inevitability he brings to the table because your opponents cant say " oh he's playing this general so it has to have X,Y, and Z and i know how to properly mulligan to keep up with him". Most of the time in my experience my opponent has looked at LoT and laughed and said "that has to be the most horrible general i've ever seen.", which also makes the game easier when your opponent cant take your deck seriously by judging the book by it's cover, but I digress...
Now that my backround and inspiration for even brewing this has been covered i'm going to move on to what we're all here for. the list.
I'm a control player at heart, so this deck is built to reflect that. Keep in mind that i've tried other directions with this deck such as tribal zombies, stifle/trickbind/sundial with more of what would usually be very disadvantageous creatures(eater of days, phyrexian dreadnought etc..). Both renditions of LoT were fun, but not as competitive as the above list, and had no success whereas the current list has been pulling its weight.
Card Choices:
- For now im toying with reassembling skeleton and prince of thralls they seem good on paper but i get the feeling that the skeleton is going to be underwhelming unless i get it early, so if that's the case it'll probably get cut.
- I honestly feel i need a few more creatures, but not really sure which ones to fit in, and what they'll replace.
- i chose hatred over the usual tainted strike, on the basis of flexibility since hatred can potentially make any creature lethal versus tainted strike only making LoT lethal immediately.
- Vicious shadows+ tombstone stairwell is insane and usually the combination annihilates and unsuspecting control player who's drawing cards for days and has his reliquary tower active, otherwise Vshadows just kills an opponent over time or with a sweeper.
- Bitterblossom and Goblin assault are my token fodder, and can make the games go really quick if your opponents don't have an answer.
-I once upon a time had rix maadi, dungeon palace in the land base, but realized it not as useful because i don't want to tap 4 on my turn to make everyone discard most of the time.
- One card i would like to fit in is The abyss, since it's destroy i can still regenerate LoT, and keep control of the board.
- Gravepact is to offset the drawback of saccing 2 critters to LoT by making my opponents do the same, i've been switching back and forth between butcher of malakir and this and haven't come with a for sure answer yet.
- Gravecrawler, bloodghast, and skullclamp .thats a no brainer, since LoT is an errata'd zombie gravecrawler is bloodghast 2.0 in this deck, and i heard that's good when you have a skullclamp out.
- Nevinyrral's Disk, and all is dust are other cards im considering just because i cant really hit enchantments or planeswalkers well. im more apt to do this with prince of thralls in mind.
Overall i'm happy with where i'm at with the deck, but i know i could certainly improve it. i'm confident the community can help me with that, so please comment, critique, and ask questions. thanks for your time.

Remember that Tainted Strike can be played on an opponent's creature. If you play politics a lot, and you probably should since your general can give people free cards, it can be really powerful.
The weak link in your deck is probably Icefall. Maybe that should become Tainted Strike.
Anyway, nice deck. It's funny to me that people think he's a terrible general. He gives you 3 colors, two of which are blue and black. Even if you never cast him, that's really dangerous.
BTW, how's the Torpor Orb been working out? Do you tutor for it often?
stifle and trickbind should be in your deck, in case torpor orb does not appear or be forever disappeared. tombstone stairwell seems to be very underpowered in this build. you dont have enough creatures to really make it effective. im suprised i dont see any voltron pieces in here either. it would make lord very difficult to deal with.

yea i actually agree that icefall is pretty bad, it stayed in the list throughout my trials since it has recover and i was trying it out to see how relevant it would be since LoT makes you sac 2 dudes and i have a plethora of sac lands, but it hasn't been much better than any of my 1 shot icefalls with hit a critter clause( wrecking ball, aftershock etc..) and i hardly get to recover it anyhow.
Tainted strike will be making it back into the deck, just because as you said i don't have to be the one who kills an opponent with it. It's a format with big dudes anyway im sure someone else can do my dirty work for me. so i'll probably take out hatred for this.
Torpor orb is a house when you get it online, because it shuts down what feels like at least half of the format, and makes some generals worthless. very good disruption piece. i don't tutor for it too often because i can function without it, but it's one of those cards in the deck that enable fast starts.

I originally had stifle and trickbind in the first stabs at building the lord, but i found them very underwhelming. the deck is very mana intensive and just adding those extra blue mana to cast him were really tough sometimes, and were very irrelevant most of the time in practice against opposing players.
Tombstone stairwell doesnt exactly need to generate a million tokens to be effective, but i can see your point of view on my lack of creatures, but i addressed that in my OP, so if you have some good creature suggestions please bring them my way.
i see urborg but no cabal coffers? about the stairwell, these colors are very mana hungry. having to pay for cumulitive upkeeps keeps you from playing cards when you need to, such as counterspells and/or draw. i also dont see capsize in your deck for potential threats that you dont have an immediate counterspell for. leyline of the void, leyline of anticipation would help your deck out for casting at flash speed and making graveyard recursion less fruitful for your opponents. ive always had plays with stifle/trickbind. it stops lands that fetch lands, and any etb effects.
creature-wise, i dont see thraximunder, tidespout tyrant, mulldrifter, rune-scarred demon, the blue/black and/or red/black leiges.

i was actually in the processof trying cabal coffers but as you said and i stated earlier. the deck is very mana intensive, so i was weary to play too many non producing lands on their own. leyline of the void seems pretty disadvantageous not only to my opponents but to me aswell. flash speed would be nice, but i don't think it's 100% necessary, but i'm willing to try it. stifle and trickbind are good in that respect of basically acting as land removal in the situation described, but what do you trickbind or stifle later in the game, when you really need that gravy card off the top?
thrax is going in, and the lieges awswell to try out, but i also want to work in Haakon, Stromgald Scourge in addition to those, to give them more reach and make them part of the plan A of getting tresserhorn active, while still being able to take on plan b of just being anthem bodies. so with those 3 i thought of buried alive to add with those, so it can immediately get the knight engine running or go for the incarnations if i've already drawn the knights.
thanks for the advice i like how the deck is shaping up. i'll post an updated list once i've applied the changes, and have gotten to play with the deck a little bit with t he changes
leyline of the void only hits opponents graveyard btw. you know you can stifle/trickbind lord of tresserhorns coming into play effect right? haakon would not fit in this deck. you dont have any knights to cast from the grave with him. and have you thought about adding lightning greaves or other equipment that gives lord hexproof?
my Lord of T is uber-reliant on stifle, trickbind and TORPOR ORB. With cards like Eater of Days and Phyrexian Dreadnaught, Sky Swallower and Leveler. It is terrible but I can't help but be proud when monsters are torpor orbed. makes their titans scratch their head.

Haakon makes the lieges reusable for days. They are knights, so that's why i want to try buried alive since it goes good with haakon and friends and gets the incarnations whenever they're needed.
The problem I'm having with everyone harping on stifle and Trickbind is that my deck isn't just slam lord and try to win. In a multiplayer game that's just unrealistic. If I'm going to use trickbind and stifle i wouldn't take the time to try and find good resources to use as fodder to make his drawback an advantage
I'm also trying out oona, queen of the fae as a finisher and token .
