I was hoping to get a little help with an idea I've been working on recently. Years ago, before the time of EDH, I had a multiplayer deck that centered around Pestilence and Thrashing Wumpus to do lots of damage all around. It survived by having an Urza's Armor on board or a Spirit Link enchanting the wumpus.
Recently, I've been itching to translate this old deck to EDH. I was looking through some more recent cards, and came across Nirkana Revenant. This had to be my general. Think of the possibilities with this guy in play. I went off brainstorming and came up with a rough shell for what I wanted in the deck.
All was going swimingly, until I realized that Nirkana wasn't legendary. frowns...:-/
Looking through some potential other generals, I've come up with a few options:
1. Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief
This would give me another sink for my big mana, plus be a re-usable removal outlet. This would also give the option of running the deck in a more voltron style if the game state dictated as such.
2. Chainer, Dementia Master
This would allow me to take advantage of the lots of stuff dying all over the place. Probably a bit weaker of an option, since he would be dying more than anything else with Pestilence going.
3. Seizan, Perverter of Truth
This would let me sift through the deck and find my big mana as quickly as possible. I'd already be running some life gain to offset the pestilence effects, so his repeated upkeep should be held in check. He's also not that expensive mana wise, so he should be able to help me get out of the gates in the early-mid game.
4. Spirit of the Night
Pro-black and old school hotness. Not a particularly strong choice, but still an option.
What I was hoping to get in feedback, is some thoughts from the community regarding which path I should follow now that my first choice isn't legal. I would obviously tailor the deck to that general's strengths once the choice was made.
So what are some thoughts from you guys? Also, are there any cards relating to my central theme (Pestilence guys) that I should be looking into as well?

Chainer + big mana can be insane, and give you an alternative way to win by switching to reanimator mode if pestilence mode falls short. Of note, chainer can reanimate el-drazi titans, if you wanted to do buried alive -> koz + ula + it that betrays and you had enough mana open, you can suck them all into play in response to the trigger.
If your looking to hone in on a strategy that is flavored to hurt everyone at the table including yourself, then cards like Bond Of Agony, Hatred, Minion of the Wastes sorta fit that category.
As for ramping up black to hit with the pestilence abilites, aside from the Revenant, Subterranean Hangar and Bottomless Vault come to mind.
If you pour black mana into those abilites though, I think Urza's Armor only protects you for 1 life total, so all the rest hits you. Might want to get a ruling on that.
I think the best way to go about something like this would be to also gain life, which could entail playing white as well, although you can also get life from various artifacts. White has the good ones though, like Beacon of Immortality and Invincible Hymn.
Not sure if you wanted to stay mono-black, but if you did decide to go black/white, Teysa, Orzhov Scion is pretty decent.

Each pestilence/sumpus/etc activation is one instance on the stack, urza's armor will check each activation separately and block them all.

With the Urza's Armor, you just have to let each pestilence activation resolve. Each resolution counts as one damage, and that one damage would be prevented with the armor.
And I would like to keep this as a mono-black deck.
Classic Mono-Black ramp works very well with Geth, Lord of the Vault. He'd be my first choice in you must play mono-black. Maybe not as efficient as Drana but he's perceived as less threatening than her too (the local Drana deck routinely has to pay 9 or 11 mana for her). His ability is so disgusting and I love laughing whenever someone mills out more good cards for him to steal.
However, if you can add :symg:, Vhati Il-Dal works fantastically with pestilence effects. Simply tap him to reduce an opponent's creature's toughness to one, then the next pestilence activation kills the creature. It's like having Avatar of Woe as your general. And Vigor protects and beefs up your entire army! You can Tooth and Nail for Pestilence Demon and Vigor and go to town. Green and Black cover each others' weaknesses very well, what with Black being unable to destroy non-creatures and Green being unable to destroy creatures. You can do grave pact sac-and-recursion shenanigans and everything. I highly recommend it.
Also, don't forget Exsanguinate in either deck. It's a great way to get more mileage out of pestilence effects.
Pestilence stuff: Withering Wisps is great, but you need to be running snow lands (which also works with Lens if you're group doesn't expect it). Festering Evil Gives you a little bit every turn, and can be popped for more if you need to. Screams of the Damned cuts off recursion, but does have the same effect.
Life gain stuff: Sun Droplet goes beautifully with pestilence. I'd consider Angelheart Vial, even with the high cost, just because of how quickly you'll be racking up counters.
This sounds like a fun deck. I may throw something along these lines together.

Needs some recursion to get your pestilence dudes back. Profane Command does that and more with all that mana you'll be making.

Nantuko Shade[/CARD] is another that takes advantage of the big mana, and Steel Hellkite pumps too, as well as being one of blacks only answers to enchantments/artifacts.
I would add something like strata scythe or nightmare lash so your pestilence guys can live to do more damage. Loxodon warhammer Maybe some indestructible creatures as well to keep pestilence on the board and survive all your other pestilence effects.

Or Bonehoard. It only gets more amusing as guys hit the bin.
I think I counted that out to 72 cards. We'll just top it off with another 24 Swamps to round out the mana base. That leaves me with roughly 5 cards to go. Any suggestions now? I could throw in a [CARD}Corrupt[/CARD] for another drain/life gain effect. I could go with a Vampire's Bite for a one-off life gain, or a Tainted Strike for a surprise with a shade attack. Of I could just fill in a few tutors for consistency.
I think you can cut some card like Nantuko Shade, Blood Tithe, Altar of Shadows (too slow IMO), Angelheart Vial, Consuming Vapors and replace them with sweepers.
Boseiju, Who Shelters All is another great land you'd want to add since it protects your sorceries such as Exsanguinate, Consume Spirit etc from counters.

I think Maga is the best general for this type of deck. You have plenty of card draw so Seizan helps your opponents out too much. What I dislike about Geth/Chainer/Drana is that they don't just kill people when you have a ton of mana. I run a Geth deck on MTGO and I keep running into situations where I have Geth with 50+ mana and I can't even kill someone with him whereas Maga would just straight kill whoever was the biggest threat. Sure Geth gives me a good board position in that situation but that can be negated just by someone dropping Oblivion Stone. Most people also think that these other guys are "better" generals despite them actually being worse so they tend to draw more hate than just running Maga who is actually the best monoblack general. In addition to that Maga supports the damage theme pretty well as you won't need to cast him for quite as much since the Pestilence effects are doing their thing. Even though it is a little risky I would still run Extraplanar Lens in this deck.
EDIT: And if you have access to it Candelabra of Tawnos is extremely powerful and any deck that can pretty easily generate 30+ mana should probably run Yawgmoth's Will unless you feel it would be too broken for your playgroup.
Alright, I've added an up to date decklist up in the first post. Quick question about the black 'walkers; won't I be killing them at an alarming rate due to the pestilence effects?
Thank you everyone for the feedback and suggestions.
Quick question about the black 'walkers; won't I be killing them at an alarming rate due to the pestilence effects?
No. Pestilence effects deal damage to creatures and players only. It will only damage a planeswalker if you decide to redirect some of that damage from a player (including yourself) to one of that players planeswalkers.

Here are some more suggestion
Maybe you'd want to make the deck a bit control by including sweepers like Damnation, Mutilate, Oblivion Stone, All is Dust, Plague Wind and Reiver Demon. I think sweepers will be a great addition since you've already got Chainer, Dementia Master as your recursion, you might want to add Geth, Lord of the Vault to steal opponent's utility creature/artifact, building back board position after wrath while milling them for more reanimation target.
As suggested above, Petrified Field and Grim Discovery are needed to recur Cabal Coffers or Boseiju. Or if you're on a higher budget, Crucible of Worlds is another great option
Innocent Blood might be better replaced with Fleshbag Marauder since it can go into your Mimic Vat
