Hi there! this is my first thread on MTGS, so stick with me. I have made a Sharuum, the Hegemon deck, but i feel like there are some missing pieces. Here's what i have now:
Sensei's Divining Top (obvious include, but i'll tackle one expensive thing at a time) Diabolic Intent (fun tutor, and the drawback doesn't usually hurt much) Nevinnyral's Disk (fun combo with darksteel forge, or just a cheap, and recurring, reset button in a pinch) Enlightened Tutor (Increases decks consistency, also costs $15) copy artifact (not sure how useful this will prove to be, but if i ever have the extra cash lying around, i might pick one up) lotus bloom (fun mana acceleration) kuldotha forgemaster (tinker, with a slight drawback that could easily be nullified) Stoneforge Mystic (finding swords, from feast and famine to sword of the meek, and all points in between. and an extra copy of greaves if i need the haste/shroud) Sen Triplets (sounds fun, but i have never experienced real play with it so i'm not sure how good it is in multiplayer) Platinum Emperion (better than the angel. if im paying 8 mana, i want a body that resembles it. on top of that, i can let creatures go unblocked and not worry about them doom blading it later) Krark Clan Ironworks (sounds fun to sacrifice some ramp early game to put me ahead a few turns) Salvaging station (not quite sure how well this will work, seems a bit expensive, but it does sound fun with spellbombs)
Cards I'm choosing not to play:
More board wipes - i don't generally have a problem with hordes of creatures. if there is a single threat, i have ways of dealing with it. past that, i believe i have enough tutors/draw spells to find my decree of pain(or disc when i get one) Open the Vaults/Roar of Reclamation - i feel like if there is an artifact in my graveyard, i will have a way to get it out. i am rarely ever faced with the problem of have more than, say, two artifacts that i need to get back. Mirrorworks - neat card, but in my experience, it doesn't work well with the curve. i might end up trying it out eventually, but not right now. Platinum angel - emperion is better Ashnod's altar - i like ironworks better because it allows me to sacrifice non creatures that i no longer have use for Sundering Titan - Destroying lands is strongly discoraged in every playgroup i know, and especially in EDH, there aren't very many basics for me to hit anyways. In addition to that, it doesn't fulfill all the things i look for in a fatty. a 7/10 body is cool, but there's no evasion, no combat abilities at all. Spell Crumple - I'm not playing control, i don't need that many counterspells and i already have hinder Darksteel Ingot - CMC 3 mana ramp stuff has to be good to be used, and the ingot isn't really any better than a lot of CMC 2 ramp artifacts that i already play
I know about disciple and some other broken infinite combos, but my playgroup banned infinite combos after i started winning too much. Also, i am on a bit of a tight budget, so please keep your suggestions within a reasonable price range
In my experience, Roar of Reclamation > Open the Vaults. For one more mana, you avoid returning those pesky enchantments like Aura of Silence, Aura Shards, Propaganda, or the like. It's just generally a safer play, unless you have enchantments of your own (which you really shouldn't have).
Also, since you have Capsules and Spellbombs, Salvaging Station is secretly awesome.
Some more things to think about:
- Since Sharuum interacts so well with artifacts, any non-artifact card needs to come under that much more scrutiny in your list. For example, Sower of Temptation doesn't have anything to do with Sharuum or any other artifacts, so it could probably get cut for something else.
- You have a lot of random Esper-colored good stuffs that don't really seem to synergize well. If that is the case, maybe Sharuum isn't the right commander for you, and if not, maybe consider cutting some of the generically good cards for things that might interact better with each other. For example, Consecrated Sphinx is a powerful card, but it hardly gets any extra value from being played in this list versus any other list.
- This format is not a good place for cards that have a restriction or a drawback. For example, Mox Opal requires you to have metalcraft, or else it is completely dead. Although it is highly likely that you can achieve this, it is not 100% guaranteed, so you should probably find something more stable, like Darksteel Ingot (one of the best and cheapest fixers ever made).
Check out my budget Sharuum list in my sig for more ideas. Also, you should read Blackjack's Big Guide to EDH deck-building (stickied in the main Commander thread) for even more advice.
@OCPunisher
Truth be told, i probably will cut sower of temptation. It'll fetch a good price on star city as soon as i get something to take its place.
Also, you said it yourself. i will have metalcraft almost all the time. it doesnt matter whether i have it on turn one or two, but come turn three, i either have metalcraft or i dont belong in the game. by turn three, i would rather have a free mana rockthan a cost three rock that doesn't die when someone plays a creeping corrosion.
Consecrated sphinx is good, not only in other lists, but this one as well. it allows me to find what i need, almost as a tutor, which is key to keeping my list consistent. and whether or not i get extra value from playing it here doesn't matter. i get about as much extra value here as you do playing a vault of whispers over a swamp. the difference may seem insignificant from one angle, but when you look at it another way, you see the value. vault of whispers turns on metalcraft, but is open to a shatter effect. Consecrated sphinx is card draw, but in the form of a body that can die
Couple of thoughts on Consecrated Sphinx:
- It's kinda threatening to see someone else play it, and nobody needs that extra negative attention. Compare that to something like Couriers Capsule that is much less conspicuous and has more synergy.
- It's not too hard to stop, compared to Capsule or Recurring Insight or Thirst for Knowledge.
Where consecrated sphinx does attract that negative attention, it's usually nothing more than a simple doom blade or answer spell. It's not like I can't recurr the sphinx with the 3 1/2 zombifyesque cards. On top of being easily brought back, it provides a longer, more advantageous effect than one of the examples you offered
I'm amazed, no one here has recommended master transmuter yet. Also some good cards are:
-magister sphinx (a good way to make everyone hate you but if in 1v1 it's amazing)
-Sharding sphinx (gives you tokens, but the tokens double giving a nice effect)
-Enigma sphinx (cascade? when it dies it goes back into your library? Yes please!)
-Lux cannon (a good source of removal)
(I'm new to the website, sorry I don't know how get the art)

Yeah, I'm use to the combo version with Dire Undercurrents. In this build Open the Vaults is not as strong.
