I've played a lot of EDH since i got addicted half a year ago, and have had some different decks. I have now tried playing every colour except black, as that is the colour I have had the fewest playables in. Now, however, I've managed to pick up some of the better black cards. I want to try building a black deck, maybe with some green and/or red thrown in since i have a lot of unused cards in those colours.
The question is: I'm looking for a fun, but not weak B/x general. Oh, and it would be fun if it was a bit off-radar, Kresh isn't really that innovative.
Edit: I have decided to build around Mirri. Any suggestions for the deck is welcome, I will post a deck list when I have enough cards.
I personally like Sedris, the Traitor King. He is fairly off the radar, and gets the job done quite nicely. I have had very good results with him in my playgroup.

I've always like Tsabo Tavoc as a general. She's a decent beater for general damage if need be, but she's also a general-hoser, which is nice (although it's understandable if you don't want to use such a potentially annoying general). And BR has all sorts of wonderful fatties like Vampiric Dragon, making for quite the deck.
The problem is of course that he is 7-mana general without haste or any protection. (Okay, if there is a legendary removal spell, I am wrong. I think the red kami with channel qualifies. No relevant protection.) I wouldn't call him strong.
Go monoblack. There are a lot of fun generals there!

You mean like Visara the Dreadful? I would overall agree with you that Tsabo Tavoc is a bad General. There are definitely better Generals. Especially if one is looking for a Rattlesnake type General.

Agreed, but from what you said, I would be led to assume you are on a budget. That said, leaving it mono-colored should really help keep a stable and cheap manabase.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

You could try Volrath the Fallen. Run a lot of fatties and stomp on people for general damage (Draco comes to mind). If you want something a little less beat-stick, then maybe Seizan, Perverter of Truth?
I've been working on a MBC using Korlash, Heir to Blackblade as my general. Sure his Grandeur ability is pointless, but a regenerating nightmare for 4 CMC is awesome. I'm focusing on a main win with general damage, using hatred as my number one killer.
Ob Nixilis, the Fallen Only really requires the land base and crucible to be effectively designed, leaving the rest of the deck open for design space. on top of that it turns land drops into a non-creature damage source. To me he's definately one of the most powerful monoblack generals available.
Iname, death aspect can be really really nifty and good, but the deck design is somewhat dictated by the general (not that it's a bad thing). Very slick and underappreciated.
If you're looking for straight efficient beats, Ob-crapulous, Korlash, or Maga.
Mirri the Cursed can be scary in terms of a timmy general damage deck. I've been in games where she dropped turn 2 - it can get ugly quick.
I agree with everyone who's suggested Korlash. He's the only mono-black general I've built around, and he's wicked. Hard to kill, and he gets bigger as times goes on. Throw in Dauthi Embrace to give him shadow, and it's just plain nasty.

I've seen Horobi, Death's Wail used to good effect in a multiplayer.
Xira Arien has been sitting in my trade binder for years. She's only just now started begging me for a place at the head of her own EDH deck. I reckon she'd make a fairly stylish general in B/R/G.
I think I'll build around Mirri, it seems like it doesn't require any specific cards while still rewarding good choices. Please do come with suggestions for cards to the deck.
The deck is pretty straight-forward. Put Mirri into play, remove blockers, pump Mirri with equipments. I have only played since Lorwyn but have played a lot since then, so my card pool is on the normal pretty good but with some obvious lacks. I will try to get cards like more tutors, necropotence and hatredwhen I see them. The deck is obviously best in 1vs1 but could do well in multiplayer too, haven't tried yet.
have you considered the card Hatred in conjunction with Mirri? That gives her a helping of kickass especially if she goes unblocked. It has the potential to take out an opponent in one hit. Though it does cost you some life.

I'll pick up Hatred the moment I see it Any other good pump-spells in black, instants, sorceries or enchantments? Some games I felt I got stalled multiple turns just because of a flier that was too big for Mirri to hit through. That's some of the reason for why I play so much targeted removal and sac-effects. This deck would love some Barter in Blood, usually no problem just playing mirri again later.
I recently threw together a Mirri deck that was inspired by this post. It basically consists of a bunch of cool black cards I had laying around. It was a lot of fun to play today for the first time. Some stuff I included:
Vampire's Bite - Works awesome when you can also pump Mirri in the same turn, and is a sub-theme with Mirri being a vampire.
Great to hear you got inspired by this thread. Vampire's Bite was one card I totally overlooked, thanks The others will be a little more difficult to get a hold on, but I'll trade for them at the first opportunity

Shizo, Death's Storehouse - Nice land for pushing through damage. I actually won one game today by tutoring this card and then attacking with Phage the Untouchable for the win.
Promise of Power - Who doesn't like card drawing and a nice token creature?
