Hello 1v1 enthusiasts! One of my local stores is having a series of 1v1 EDH tournaments with the first place prize being a Commander's Arsenal. Naturally, I want to win that sucker. They've (rather unfortunately, imo) chosen to use the regular multiplayer banlist and rules since most competitive EDH players in the area are already comfortable with those rules.
I've been a bit bored with my other decks lately and I've been itching to build something in Junk colours for a while. The commander options for Junk are kinda limited, although none are bad. I don't want to muck around with graveyard shenanigans or token combos; just a straight up The Rock style deck. Doran is the best fit for this, I think. Thus this deck:
(A big thank you to Emether, from whose primer I guiltlessly stole a ton of tech)
November 7, 2012
- Fauna Shaman, +Krosan Grip (Too few creatures to take advantage of the Shaman, and too many must-answer artifacts/enchantments in my meta to not run K-Grip)
-Master of the Wild Hunt, +Weathered Wayfarer (Powerful, but slow with no immediate board impact)
-Treetop Village, +Murmuring Bosk (My colour fixing was a bit lacking, Bosk hopefully fixes that)
-Dryad Arbor, +Cavern of Souls (I was never happy to draw Dryad Arbor, and a turn one GSZ for it doesn't get a turn two Doran. Cavern is another colorless land, but it can still cast Doran on turn turn. Plus my meta seems to have a serious control fetish...)
-Winter Orb, +Cataclysm (The board wipe is harder for my opponents to fight through and just more useful in general)
-Sol Ring, +Crop Rotation (This deck doesn't take advantage of Sol Ring's acceleration, but it does abuse Strip Mine well. Crop Rotation is another way of getting Strip Mine)
+Crucible of Worlds (Obvious)
+Gavony Township (Good with the number of small utility dudes. Makes Crop Rotation/KotR better)
+Yavimaya Hollow (Replaces Sylvan Safekeeper and Saffi for protection. Makes Crop Rotation/KotR better)
-Sylvan Safekeeper
-Saffi Ericsdotter
-Bitterblossom (Little dudes aren't quite what I want here.)
-Survival of the Fittest (The deck isn't set up to abuse it. Fauna Shaman at least swings. Might go back in.)
-Armadillo Cloak (Fragile)
-Oblivion Ring (Instant speed removal is better)
-Sorin, Lord of Innistrad (Good, but the emblem is not very good with Doran out.)
-Night's Whisper (Small effect, still very useful. Might go back.)
-Sign in Blood (Small effect, awkward mana cost.)
-Stupor (For the record, I think this is better than it looks. Cuts must be made though, and I think I have enough discard.)
-Cataclysm (Very powerful, might go back in. Probably in place of Winter Orb if that gets cut.)
-Pendelhaven (Small effect, felt I was running one too many lands.)
-3 Filter Lands (Double filter opening hand is a terrible place to be.
Cuts complete! Is there anything else that looks off or could be replaced with more effective choices?
Good call on Crucible of Worlds, Jibux. I completely forgot about that. I'm going to keep Tutelage over Necropotence, since I can never play Necro correctly :/
Taking into account your suggestions and some playtesting tonight:

Still one card to go. Decided GftT was pretty much strictly worse than Path, and I'm a moron for even considering dropping Path before GftT. Last card is probably going to be Grave Titan, although it pains me. It's an insanely fast clock, but that's all it is.
I personally like Priests of Norn in a Doran deck - 3 mana for a vigilent 4/4 infect creature is amazing. Though I can see why some people wouldn't want to waste a slot on just one infect creature if there's no support for it.
I had a pretty good experience with Cataclysm in my Doran deck. I played most of my games to test the deck against a certain Lyzolda deck in our circle. I think it warrants testing as it has such the potential to be a complete blow out at times.
EDIT: I seen that you actually cut Cataclysm in place of Winter Orb, I played them both. The Orb is so good with all of our manadorks and as I've stated the Cataclysm is such a big swing.

Well, we had the first of the four tournaments tonight. I came in third with the list below. not sure what the top 8 was, but top 3 from Thada Adel, Maelstrom Win-derer, and then myself with Doran.
Round 1: Tetsuo Umezawa 2-0
Nothing much to note here, things came together really well and I won pretty handily, although there were some close calls (like Nicol Bolas stealing Doran).
Round 3: Zur the Enchanter 2-0
Game one, discard and removal kept him on the back foot long enough to Cataclsym and seal the win. Game two I Strip-locked him. :/
Round 4: Thada Adel, Aquisitor 1-2
The deck that ended up winning the whole thing. Game one, he bribed my Sun Titan, then Spelltwined the Bribery to get my Stoneforge Mystic fetching his Sword of Feast and Famine. Game two involved a Serra Ascendant. Game three, I stumbled on mana and he acquired my Crucible and strip-locked me. This match really illustrated everything that is wrong with the multiplayer rules and banlist in 1v1 environments
Round 5: Radha, Heir to Kheld 2-0
Land Destruction Radha doesn't do well against this style of deck. Mana dorks and Weathered Wayfarer kept my resources up enough to win pretty handily.
No major changes. On the advice of a friend, I swapped Ad Nauseum for Stupor. I didn't miss AD, but Stupor was not good. I want all my discard to cost less than Doran so Mesmeric Fiend or Gerrard's Verdict would have been much better every time I drew it. I might put one of those two in at some point, but tonight the lack of a Pro-White sword was a big deal so I'll try out War and Peace.
The only other change was swapping Reflecting Pool in for Gavony Township. I did miss Township on one occasion, so it will probably find it's way in once I settle on a manabase I like (possibly dropping Tectonic Edge or Okina for it).
Sounds like strip mine lock is so strong, it might be worth it playing life from the loam as well, wouldn't it?
An with serra ascendant, how about ranger of eos?
I considered both of those, but Ranger is slow and Ascendant looses a lot of impact as the game progresses. He's only super broken before turn 4, typically. Loam is a great card too, and I did include it in my Glissa Pox-Rock deck (the precursor to this deck in a lot of ways) but Doran isn't set up to abuse Loam the same way, and I don't think abusing Loam is a direction I really want to go with Doran. Playing Loam for value is fine, imo, but not really worth it in most cases.
The Canadian Magic Tour was in my city yesterday and there was another 1v1 tourny. First place was a FtV:Exiled. I placed fourth, and I will write a more detailed report later.
The deck performed well, but Blood Moon and Back to Basics absolutely ruined me in the top8. I'm not sure how to approach this. On the one hand, the deck is incredibly colour hungry and my current mana base is rock solid and provide excellent utility through Crop Rotation and Knight of the Reliquary. If I want to bolster my defenses against non-basic land hate, I'd need to add at least 6-9 more basics. That would reduce consistency and overall power of the deck and I don't know if that is an acceptable trade-off. I'd much prefer to rely on my discard or removal to solve this problem.

1 life + 1 mana a turn, rather than X life (0 to 6). Although negated by land destruction.
That last sentence is an exceptionally big point. It has the same drawback as Armadillo Cloak does, and it just /begs/ to be Strip Mined...
I'm thinking of cutting Eladamri's Call, Path to Exile, and Bloodline Keeper at this point. I suppose Crop Rotation could go in place of Call, and I'll just tutor Knight of the Reliquary if I need a land. I do like instant speed Bojuka Bogs though...
Even with 40 life? It just seems like such a marginal effect, though I guess it does add up.

As far as changes, I'm going to be putting [/CARD]Okina, Temple to the Grandfather's, Sensei's Divining Top, and Krosan Grip in, somehow. I'm also going to rework the mana base slightly. I think I want more rainbow lands. City of Brass, Murmuring Bosk, Reflecting Pool, and one or two Shadowmoor filters are all possibilities.
BRWC Mardu Shops - Tymna and Akiri Artifacts BRWC
I did, and it was quite good when it landed. With 40 life, games tended to go long despite my best efforts.
They will not. I've argued and argued, but the tournament organizer is adamant about sticking with the current rules
No major changes. On the advice of a friend, I swapped Ad Nauseum for Stupor. I didn't miss AD, but Stupor was not good.
