There are gonna be some *****in' card pictures in this area as soon as I get home from work. A lot of this is unfinished, however I wanted to get the list out there to start receiving some feedback.
KAALIA CONTROL (Because everyone loves comic sans)
This is something I have been working with for a little while. Inspired by Gaka's multiplayer list, I wanted to port Kaalia to 1v1 (French ban list because, apparently, real me use French bans). Usually, with kaalia, you would think I started by searching gatherer for all the demons, dragons, and angels I could find. Actually, thanks to my experience with teysa, I started with discard and moved from there. Intially, WGC (Worldgorger combo) was included, however thanks to some convincing from gaka, it was dropped.
Why, you ask?
Unlike most other combos I run, WGC:
-Has very few interchangable peices, meaning very little flexibility around hate.
-Is ridiculously easy to disrupt. Unlike most other combos, disruption for this combo only requires a single kill spell, which most decks run.
-The drawback to a failed combo is too harsh. The combo is not as fast and consistant as hermit druid, so the drawback of losing almost everything I felt was too high.
So, WGC was dropped. Looking at kaalia, my first thought was to push her out as fast as possible, completely overwhelming my opponent, sorta like zur. Unlike Zur, kaalia can't protect herself, does almost no damage on her own, and is useless without a big fatty in the hand.
Are you keeping up? Combo? No. Aggro? No. Which leaves? DUN DUN DUN CONTROL. Let's jump back for a second, I mentioned I started with the discard. At the start, it was just TS, IoK, and duress. Wi9th the control game plan in mind I upped it up to 9. Yeah, 9 discard spells. You dig? It doesn't really matter if you do or not, since it works. Moving on, I took a look at the current meta. Edric and sygg as far as the eye can see. Both strong, both tempo, both rely on weenies, both.....ugh blue. Blue is annoying. I have all this discard, but still felt something was missing. Well, a few somethings. I needed a way to protect myself against their swarms, as well as a way to seal the deal when it came to winning.
Faeries was also blue and won through weenie beats. Need any more hints? Fallout. Yeah Volcanic fallout was the card I needed. Oh ey, look, I ru red. Let's also toss a pyroclasm in there, for Sn'G.
Now for the "seal the deal" cards? Once kaalia is out and swinging, I realized I didn't need to do much else. Without blue, however, I lack the protecion that counterspells afford. Solution? Mass LD. I can hear the groans from this side of the screen. Both edric and sygg use very few rocks, meaning a resolved geddon would end the game.
So, armed with discard, LD, and an army of huge beaters, Kaalia is ready to claim her rightful place beside teysa as the two top tier decks. To the haters: COME AT ME BRO!
In version 2 I have made some cuts, most notably karmic guide. My buddy wasn't pulling his weight.
- Cataclysm
- Karmic Guide
- Swiftfoot boots
+ earthquake
+ Wrath of God
+ Diabolic tutor
Suggestions from a certain mono-black spirit player have made me take a serious interest in red elemental/pyro blast. I will test that and, perhaps, some additional spot removal. Maybe boom//bust for more LD? I am not feeling PTE.
Now that you have THE LIST in hand, you think you're ready? You're not. I can tell. I have spent a lot of years around people who weren't ready.
I am not going to go over lands because **** you.
Akroma, Angel of Fury- I looked at both akromas. At the time, Gaka as running red A. I haven't actually pulled her yet, but pro-blue and can't be countered is a house!
Angel of despair- Vindicate? Giant flying beatstick? Potentially free? Yes.
Baneslayer Angel- The mirror never fe;t so GOOD. Plus, sometimes, you will be hankering for some life.
Bogardan Hellkite-BOOM! Yeah, that's the sound of your guys dying and you taking 5+ to the FACE
Eternal Dragon- Mana fixing, flying beatstick, recurrable. What's not to like?
Grand Abolisher-**** you blue
Iona, Shield of Emeria- Mono colored decks quake in fear.
Karmic Guide- This mother ****er....I like him.
Linvala, Keeper of Silence-I heard creatures can do things
Mesmeric Fiend-LOL nice hand bro!
Mother of Ruins-Protection and evasion. In a one drop
Pestilence Demon-Sweeps ALL THE THINGS!
Rakdos The Defiler-This guy is probably the best choice. I sometimes even pick him over iona. I have DESTROYED people with him.
Rune-Scarred Demon-I am a fan of tutors, yes.
Scourge of Kher Ridges-MOAR SWEEPERS!
Steel Hellkite-e. tutor, pseudo-deed, 5/5
Tidehollow Sculler-YO BRO, I SAID LET MEE SEE THAT HAND!
Weathered Wayfarer-3-color deck=land search is important
Yosei, The morning star-I actually locked someone out with him.
Armageddon-Wins games. It really does.
Blightning-Damage and discard? Dign me up.
Castigate-More discard
Cataclysm-ALL THE PERMANENTS
Demonic Tutor-tutorrrrrrrr
Duress-no need
Gerrard's Verdict-good enough for legacy
Grim tutor-
Hymn to tourach-Possibly the best discard spell ever.
Inquisition of Kozilek-Taregted discard.
Living Death-sweeper and potentailly able to win games
Night's Whisper-MORE CARDS
Pyroclasm-SWEEPER FOR THE WEENIES
Ravages of War-I heard geddon was good
Reanimate-I want that guy and that guy and that guy
Thoughtseize-The best targeted discard
Vindicate-No need
gftt: It's an acronym because all the best cards are shortened.
Swords: Don't question
Chaos warp: This one has me on the fence, entirely due to the french rules. They have this silly rule of no tuck. Making this card ****. I use it for the new merged rules we play around with here, but unless the french accept their new tuck overlords, it may go.
Volcanic fallout: This said **** you to faeries when it was released, now it says **** you to edric.
Skeletal scrying: I don't need no stinking graveyard.
Lightning Bolt: Bolt you to death.
Words of wisdom:
Gaka
Woo for Kaalia!
Beanman's list and mine are pretty much identical now - because it's awesome. Maybe two-three cards off and some land choices.
Worst matchup is draw-go control, which toys like Defense Grid, Sneak Attack, RAkroma, and Rix Maadi help with.
(Rix Maadi is probably the best land for this style of deck. Period.)
As stated, once Kaalia lands and swings once, you are usually in complete control of the outcome of the game, barring a wipe. Every single creature either disrupts or can win the game alone.
Kaalia wrecks anyone unprepared to deal with an empty hand and giant fat things swinging at you. If you're slow, mana screwed, or just have no answers in hand - you lose. There is no "recovery" stage. You lose.
Pillage, aftershock, catastrophe and wildfire can all function as mana denial while being versatile. I would also play something like starstorm over pyroclasm as starstorm is an instant, can cycle and can kill larger creatures.

I tested sinkhole, pillage, stone rain, and f. mage. I found targeted LD to be wanting. This deck doesn't ramp, so setting your opponent back one or two lands isn't effective. Both catashtrophe and wildfire, I feel, require too heavy a mana commitment. The reason I chose pyroclasm over starstorm is simple, SS requires more mana to be as effective as pyro. The red sweepers are there for the WW, edric, sygg decks that pop up. Edric tends to pop out turn 3, so SS would still be played at sorcery speed, to get him while he is tapped out.
Nice list. In 1v1, 'manners' go out the window so it's nice to see the punishing mass LD and other critical spells finally being used. Each of those is a must-counter spell for many decks. Surprised we don't see more land D...

I found the issue to be LD alone doesn't win games. It's meant to be supportive while your threats take their toll.As long as Kaalia is on the field, I don't care about mana.

EVEN MORE HATE. Honestly, blue is this deck's worst enemy. Considering most of the top decks contain blue, I feel the hate is justified. Hell, I might find room for pyroblast. The MU is that bad. However, I have decided to try new liliana. She is nice on the curve, potentially killing lots o stuff. Want to fit corpse dance in here, however either way another rix maadi is nice.
I like this list. A lot. One question though, why no Swords? 2 mana to equip isn't that stressful, and they're so backbreaking. Especially Sword of Light and Shadow which lets you Yosei lock with a sac outlet. SoFaF is more hand disruption, and SoFaI is...well...incredibly stupid good.
