A 24 year old in Tennessee killed his friend who was spending the night at his house before they had planned to go to a Magic LGS, and his mother. He left a long facebook post, and at the time of my post here, is on the run.
Nothing he did was OK, or right and I do not condone or agree with it, or him. I don't know why he did this, or why he chose this.
I am shattered, there is not a better emotional word to describe it, shattered, after reading his post.
Mental Health is brought up every time there is gun violence in schools or homes, and that is the only goal of this post. If you, or someone you love, may be going through anything painful, please give them love and support, try to help, don't make fun of them, don't ignore them, don't belittle them. If someone has a depressive outburst, don't go "HA HA" like Nelson and blow it off. Depression and mental pain are real. Your friends or loved ones may be in real pain and not getting help or support, may feel brushed off or like their issues are invalid. It is common for someone to withdraw from a friend they feel is depressed or 'sad all the time', if a friend was on fire, would you try to put it out, or just stand far enough away you didn't get burned? We all make our choices every single day, all we can do is try to make better choices, for us and those we love.
The following link is graphic. It is literally a letter written by the killer of his own mother and friend. I't comes across fairly cold, from a person who believes they are so broken they could never be fixed. https://imgur.com/gallery/Rwi6o
We as a society don't take mental health serious enough, it's very unfortunate. Men, in particular, have a rough go of it as the preponderance of stigma around mental health is compounded by the tenets of masculinity - stoicism, no showing weakness, not communicating, etc. As a result, men often develop unhealthy coping mechanisms and in extreme cases violence (whether inward or outward) becomes their outlet to cope. Normalizing mental health discussions is something we should all get on board with.
