What makes this card such a hot item right now? I remember when FoF and WaP were switched in usage...what does this card really hit hard? does it keep certain decks out of the format completely?

The thing about SoWaP is that it can slam any deck. The red and white prot is relevant against many decks/creatures, but the real power lies in the fact that the sword can swing in for anywhere between 6-12 damage (no matter what deck your playing), in a single swing (while you gain life). Add onto this the fact Delver decks equip these onto Invisible Stalkers while G/R Aggro usually swings in hastily (t3) with Strangleroot Geist, it's borderline unbeatable. I don't think it single handedly bars decks out of the format, but it certainly makes makes me sideboard (and even MB) cards for match-ups that run SoWaP.
The swing in life is huge if you're in a race, and the evasion is relevant. It's basically a free win against Humans or Tokens if you stick on on turn 2, and free wins are a good thing.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
Lifegain and extra damage is huge, plus it's a giant middle finger to the so-very-popular white and not-so-popular-but-still-dangerous red.
As for shutting out decks, I can't even play my RDW because of this stupid sword. WaP lifegain>any burn spell I can draw.

To be fair, Sword isn't the only reason you can't run RDW successfully. RDW is just really mediocre this standard season. It'd be just as mediocre without Sword running around.
^ Yep. RDW is hurt not just by Sword, but by the fact that everything has hexproof, or simply doesn't die after you kill it.
It's already been mentioned but that's it:
-protection against relevant colors. Well, which is to say protection against Lingering Souls, basically.
-insanity in R/G. All the dorks allow you to be hit with the Sword on turn 3, which does an insane amount of damage. In a Delver deck with hexproof creatures galore, with counter magic backup...you get the idea.

Fair enough. I can't blame RDW being bad entirely on the sword, but without lifegain provided by the sword, timely reinforcements, etc, a straight burn strategy would be viable for RDW. If a sword comes down and is equipped by turn 4, I lose. Same with timely, batterskul, w/e else. The sword gives a mediocre deck a really, really bad matchup. And everyone runs them.

I don't run swords...I am making sword-less decks just to see if I can. R/G aggro shouldn't be bladebreaker still...but with flippy cards.
I don't know, I don't see the big deal. Then again I run a UG Dredge deck so I don't really have cards in hand or care about what they do...
The sword just seems so mediocre still. FaF still seems to be the best one. Lingering souls is flying anyway, R/G aggro doesn't have much in flying creatures to my knowledge? I might be wrong.
Just seems like even against delver, or if I was playing delver, I'd want my counter mana up again. I liked that about Caw-Blade...
I remember I played a U/G Delver/Mayor Runechanter pike deck before it was popular at alll. Such a hipster...
I just think people have completely blown that sword out of proportion but I just might be wrong. I play a R/W Humans dceck and I don't get blown out. Usually I wait out whatever they are trying to do with Gavony Riders and just draw into a relic-warder eventually.
FaF just alwasy seemed the best to me, and I see that decks are utilizing one or both of the colors you get prot from but the lifegain doesn't seem too relevant. The only interaction I have learned to fear so far is stupid Hound of Griselbrand with a Sword equiped. Or, of course, crusader. Those 2 make that card amazing.
Sword on a Lingering Souls token. 4 chances to equip to a creature from 1 card.
Its also relevant b/c red and white are popular blockers. FaF was highly played b/c of the Cawblade mirrors. Untapping after sword + equip and dropping Gideon pretty much sealed that game up.
FaF is only good in a deck that wants to use its mana, and has something constructive to put said mana into (Like an Elspeth in Legacy Stoneblade or something).

You don't even need Strangleroot Geist to do work with Swords. Birds of Paradise is plenty.

Small nitpick, but Sword of War and Peace was better in the Caw Blade mirrors and Boros (obv). It helped get lethal through other Birds. Sword of Feast and Famine only made them discard (with so many cards, this was rarely devastating) and untap (which could be pretty good). The fact is that Sword of Feast and Famine was a BEAST vs. Valakut, as well as the other decks in the meta at that time.
Sword of War and Peace is amazing because of the colors that it protects from (read White) and like Uranium said, it wins if it connects twice (or once equipped to Mirran Crusader :p).

Because one of the more popular chump blockers are white. Spirit Tokens, Soldier tokens, Human tokens. Also a lot of white creatures are resilient like Mirran Crusader, Doomed Traverl or got big butts Hero of Bladehold. Being able to swing past all that crap is awesome.

Because we care about facts.
SoFaF is better in a Legacy meta about grinding out card advantage, but in Standard's current aggro format, SoWaP just ends games.
