So I've found that in my lists we really don't have a crazy turn 2 play and I often end up slapping down a pair of 2 power/ 1 mana guys. While this is good and ensures the beatings continue I was wondering if anyone else has tested with this fella and if so how did he perform?
I run 4 of him, he's my 3rd choice in 2 drops but 2nd choice to Stormblood Berserker but theres no comparison there. I run a sligh curve though, and as such I run 10 2 drops to ensure I keep applying pressure. Plus Highborn is a 2 power zombie with evasion for 2 mana. He's good. I like him a lot.
Skirge is awful without a Lashwrithe though. Its bad vs delver, its 1 power on turn 2 when you probably played 2 power on turn 1.. Thats inverse, its bad. High Priest is good with all the morbid going on, if you run fume spitter.
I was a huge fan of vault skirge when I played him in mono black last year. He always came out early, and the lifelink more than made up for the phyrexian mana. Thanks for the idea, I'm going to go dig him out of whatever box he is in now...
My friend has been using the High Priest's morbid ability in conjunction with sacrifice effects, namely Disciple of Griselbrand. It works well enough. A blocker is about to die, sack it and gain life, especially if it's a gravecrawler or reassembling skeleton. Now you have morbid, tap two creatures, get a 5/5 flyer.

the disciple seems very loose, I'ld suggest mortarpod, especially in this meta with X/1's everywhere

Disciple is good, but i Like Drosshopper (sorry i dont know how to link the image) better, it´s a more agresive drop, gains flying and works well whith perilous myr to.

couldn't agree more. one of the better equipments. 2 effects for 1. card.
sucks thought if a delver flipped already though. but that is most likely if you were not on the play. also reduces early midnight hauntings effect by 1 in theory.

He's okay I guess. Not a lot of decks can actually block him (other than the mirror). Still though, I like Legionnaire and Mortarpod better if we're talking the strict mono-black version of the deck.
I run him as a 3 of in my deck and he has been pretty good. Also have Vault Skirge in my SB to swap with him, and have 2 Mortarpods on their way just in case I decide to be creative.
Not the greatest, but then again, we aint got too many big 2 drops.
Highborn Ghoul has been hit or miss with me in different match ups. When Intimidate matters he becomes an all star that can get by their blockers and win me the game, if they don't draw something to straight kill it. But that itself is rather rare. People usually have some way to deal with it. At the end of much use I see him as a 2/1 body for BB. NOT GOOD.
There are better options out there, specially if you go with another color. Phantasmal Image, P. Legionare, Stormblood, etc. But he's doable. I think I still have 2 of in my zombies.
I think there is plenty underestimating going on here. Fear is a great ability! It's very relevant. Even against another UB creature deck the Fear was relevant because he had a couple Black creatures and I kept snag/killing them off and getting in unblocked damage. This doesn't work for Legionnaire and if you are Red you'd be dumb not to run Stormblood (He is a 3/3 for two, duh).
I agree he is not the best body ever, but he is our best two drop.
Image and Snapcaster are not two drops... They need something worth playing. You aren't going to Image your Gravecrawler or even their Emissary or what have you. And no, you aren't going to play Snapcaster turn two because he is worse than Highborn at that point! Stop putting these in your deck as your "turn two" play; they clearly are not going to hit the field turn two, this is like saying Skaab Ruinator is a turn three play because he costs three.
Fueling the lich is a poor argument; if you are ramping up to a five drop just so you can get value out of your three or less drops, then you are doing something wrong. It just isn't scary at all when your opponent is recasting small cards at greater costs... Yes! Gravecrawler is amazing, but he is all of that in one card; he doesn't ask you to play a five drop in a non-ramp deck to reuse him.
In closing, Highborn Ghoulis good (for now) because he has better evasion, doesn't ask you to run an over cost card in aggro and should actually come down on turn two. Also is a Zombie.
Do u guys play your Mortarpods on turn 2 or hold them? I have been holding them b/c I hate to give my opponent info
Depends on whether I have another turn 2 play or not but yeah its fine to drop it on turn 2. What are you telling your opponent by dropping it early? Don't play your 1 toughness dorks. Are you not probably winning that game then?
If you want to ban powerful cards, why not Islands? They have been proven to be fairly unfair in most cases.
The worst turn 1 play you can face down is Draw, play basic Island and say, "go"

But there are very few choices at the 2 drop slot, and he is one of the least bad.
Ive been using him and Vault Skirge.
I prefer Skirge, since it carries Lashwrithe better.
Now im trying out Skirsdrag High Priest in his place.

I don't know, T1 gravecrawler into T2 Highborn really seemed to make some opponents look a little worried more then acouple times last week.
What's the hopes of the skaab? Hoping to discard a Crawler at the cost of highborns intimate?
Think I would still have to say I would go with highborn tho. Might be becouse I haven't tried the lich yet (was trying Grimgrin first).
