SO we have 3 of the battlemages so far;
Jund Battlemage2R
Creature - Human Shaman B,T: Target player loses 1 life G,T: Put a 1/1 green Saproling token into play.
2/2
Naya Battlemage2G
Creature - Human Shaman R,T: Target creature gets +2/+0 until end of turn. W,T: Tap target creature.
2/2
Bant Battlemage2W
Creature - Human Wizard G,T: Target creature gains trample until end of turn. U,T: Target creature gains flying until end of turn.
2/2
So what do we think the Grixis and Esper BMages will do? Note that they will not share abilities like the Mirage guildmages. My guess is something like this:
Grixis Battlemage2B
Creature - Zombie Wizard R,T: ~ does 2 damage to target creature or player. U,T: Return target creature you control to its owner's hand.
2/2
Esper Battlemage2U
Artifact Creature - Human Wizard W,T: Regenerate target artifact. B,T: Put target artifact card in a graveyard on top of its owner's library.
2/2
Grixis Battlemage2B
Creature - Zombie Wizard R,T: ~ does 2 damage to target creature or player. U,T: Return target creature you control to its owner's hand.
2/2
Esper Battlemage2U
Artifact Creature - Human Wizard W,T: Regenerate target artifact. B,T: Put target artifact card in a graveyard on top of its owner's library.
2/2
Regarding the grixis idea: The red ability seems way too powerful and Nightscape Master already does that, but just to creatures. Maybe it gives haste to a target creature.
The Esper one sounds pretty awesome. I hope it turns out that way. It's most likely going to have two artifact abilities. I don't see any other way around that...
The Grixis Battlemage has too powerful a red ability and is too similar to Shadow Guildmage and Nightscape Master.
The Esper Battlemage doesn't work because the black ability is not black at all. Black is lucky if it can kill artifacts (and at quite a cost), it certainly doesn't recur them.
Try these: Grixis Battlemage2B
Creature - Zombie Wizard R,T: Target creature can't block this turn. U,T: Untap target creature.
2/2

Damage on the battlemage is out for A) Being FAR too powerful (compare to the jund battlemage, which just does a single point, and to players only), and B) Using more than 5 instances of "battlemage".
I would guess something like this:
Grixis
R Ability: Draw a card, then discard a card at random
U Ability: Put the top two cards of target player's library into their graveyard
Esper
B Ability: target non-artifact creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn
W Ability: Target artifact creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.

i don't see a problem with black and ressurection, black is the biggest color for ressurection of the grave, and because this is esper, and the battlemage is blue in the first place, it's more than likely to have a black artifatct aligned ability. white has a less likely chance of having artifact-based effects than black.
The Esper Battlemage doesn't work because the black ability is not black at all. Black is lucky if it can kill artifacts (and at quite a cost), it certainly doesn't recur them.
I wasn't saying the Grixis one would do what it does, i only hoped it would (i can dream can't i?) An with Esper artifact recursion, at least the way i did it, allows artifact creatures to be returned, which is what a majority of Esper consists of.
What possible abilities should each mage have? Would Grixis care about untapping things? Can Esper regenerate artifacts? These are what we are trying to speculate.
The black ability here is completely redundant on Esper, as all the creatures will also be artifacts. The difference in mana color for the cost is not enough to make this interesting. I do agree with the white ability, though.
Perhaps it gives fear?

So far, each Guildmage's abilities have had abilities that have some amount of synergy with the rest of the shard. Jund Battlemage makes tokens for your creatures with Devour, and making the opponent lose life will complement an aggressive strategy. Bant Battlemage has two abilities that will help a single creature with many Exalted bonuses connect with the opponent. Naya battlemage is still something of a mystery, since we don't know much about the overall strategy of Naya, but we know there are many large Behemoth creatures, a good number of which should have trample I'm guessing, so a power boost synergizes with those, and the tapping ability helps the ones without trample get through unblocked. Grixis and Esper guildmages should be similar in that their abilites will somehow contribute to the shard's feel and strategy.
I wasn't saying the Grixis one would do what it does, i only hoped it would (i can dream can't i?)
Haha. Actually your dream has historical evidence: Shadow Guildmage made all the other guildmages (even Granger Guildmage, which is also more powerful because of the red ability) weep in envy. :3
Isnt the red base battlemage ability pretty much definitively locked to '~ deals 1 damage to target creature(player) and 1 damage to you'? We almost always see that ability in red at least once per 'name'mage cycle.

It can't deal damage because Grixis only appears five times in the orb and it has to be used in the Obelisk, in the Charm, twice in the Panorama, and is already in the Battlemage's name.

I think for on, Esper Battlemage will be an Artifact Wizard(esper is a "cyborish people) and it will look like this
Esper Battlemage2U
Artifact Creature - Artifact Wizard W,T: Prevent 1 damage to target Creature or Player. B,T: Regenerate Target Artifact.
The fact the White would regenerate will probely not show up but Black has a few Regenerate creatures. White is better know for damage prevention, or maybe even a +1/+1 ablity. The battlemages have all had pretty much subpar ablitiys.

For the Love of God play Wrath already!!!...... What your playing green Well then Play.......
I'm liking haste and bounce for grixis. white regenerates other stuff as part of the modern pie, but white and blue recur artifacts, not black; I can't think of anything else for the esper mage to use, though :/
