Pack Rat serves quite a few purposes and all of them fill a role that Black Devotion lists need.
The biggest one that you'll notice immediately is that every copy of Pack Rat does add to devotion. This can be huge and will get you wins.
Pack Rat also is a card that can turn dead draws into threats. A lot of the problems that MBC and Black Devotion lists have is that sometimes, even with 1-2 Underworld Connections out, is that we can draw dead cards. This usually happens in game one where we have a smattering of cards to deal with the most common threats. It really shines when you're playing that Epser Control list and in game 1, you top deck that Doom Blade. That now useless card is now contributing towards you winning the game.
Add the synergies that Pack Rat has with Whip of Erebos: you can discard cards and whip them back, or you can whip back Pack Rat and discard a card, creating a permanent Pack Rat that will stay on the board.
Pack Rat is a serious card and any version of a Black Devotion list should be running at least two. It fixes a lot of the problems that this deck has. Any naysayers should give it a shot; I've been thoroughly impressed by the usefulness of this card.
To be honest, I had never thought about splashing two colors. If I were, it would be blue and red because I really like Far // Away, and Rakdos's Return is a stellar card. The only problem is the consistency. There's no real way to make sure you're getting both of those colors unless you're running a Liliana or some sort of mana fixing card, both of which could work but are questionable.
I wouldn't mind testing this out and getting back to you on it.
thank you for laying that out for me. i will definatly try a couple out.
Pardon my ignorance here but im putting a black devotion deck together and i am very curious about pack rat and what purpous he serves in the deck. i see everyone have like 1 in the mb or some in the sb. the discard part of it is what confuses me. dont we have enough removal to kill a creature instead of discarding a card to create a chump blocker?. or is he just meant as a late game card to get rid of excess cards and create an army of rats?
Howdy. Just threw a rug fog deck together today and figured id post it to see what the community thinks. Im thinking it could be pretty annoyimg to play against but then again it might just flop. the side board is mostly geared towards control/tempo builds. Let me know what you think.
So just fog a bunch and protect your ral zareks so you can ultimate them and kill with your mimics and aetherlings. I know there is no ramp but it coukd be good. Please help with any other ideas.
Thanks
Anyone else notice that the only decks that placed well at the IQ's and scg open only had voice in there sideboard. Only one naya deck and one bant hexproof deck ran them mainboard. The rest were in junk rites sideboards. Not saying voice isnt good, in fact its an awsome card but to see very few played in the top decks that won makes me think he is still way overhyped. Maybe his home has not been found or maybe people just had a hard time finding any to buy for the tournaments. I guess only time will tell. 40.00 on scg is just plain silly if ya ask me.
Havent really tested it much but I like the way it draws. Gotta work on a sideboard but I know there will be at least 3 golgari charm for wraths and whatnot.
Hey there. Just wanted to post this here because I am brewing a bug deck revolving around master biomancer and corpsejack menace which I will post here later. I cant now because im on break. A couple bits of help for your deck would be, no manaleak. It is not standard legal. You could run the syncopates and maybe spell rupture, since most of you creatures should be bigger than the opponents. Strangleroot geist does not work well with master biomancer because late game his undying wont trigger due to the counters from master biomancer. Lotleth troll, dreg Mangler and gyre sage as a Mana dude woukd help the deck alot. Like I said ill post my list later and we can discuss them. One other thing. I would not pick aggro/control for a deck simply because the deck would be trying to do too many things. I would either stick with aggro or go more midrange.
I have played against him multiple times at.fnm and if you dont have a quick answer for him he can get out of hand. He is just a giant growing thing that will buy you some time cause people will be focusing on him while you gain board presence. Just my thoughts but he might just suck.
With the right amount of tempo he can get some big damage through. That is if your opponent plays a decent amount of creatures. I have him in there to stand up and fight rather than blow everything up. I have to playtest a bit to see if his legit or not.
So I took wru flash/tempo and tried to make its win cons Gideon, champion of justice and assemble the legion let me know what you think of the deck. I will work on a sideboard soon as long as yall think it has any potential.
Hey guys. This is my first post here in the bant control area. I plan I bringing the following list to fnm tonight and woukd like some input. I havent played recently at my lgs but there is usually a good mix of aggro, midrange and control. My sideboard is geared mostly towards esper control because the MD shoukd be able to handle aggro and midrange. Also any tips for what I should take out/ put in vs the control mu would help.
This is my first time playing control at my lgs but I love the way the deck plays. Should I add 1 more red producing land? And if so what land should I take out for it?

My meta is pretty aggresive. Against any control or tempo the sideboard lets me go more midrange.
