I've gone to a couple Standard Showdowns so far and gone 1-3-2, done some upgrading and tuning and edited the OP to v1.3. The deck is a blast to play and I like where it's going. Anybody else been playing a similar deck? What are your experiences?
Edit 6/21: 3-1 this week for second place!
I'd love to play Awakening because it fits the Throwback theme of the deck, but I left it out because it doesn't do anything until it's a win condition. The other win cons in the deck are good on defense while I try to stabilize, such as Multani, Vow, Ajani, and Traxos. Maybe it's still good enough but I think I need to make the deck better against Red and Awakening doesn't help there.
Hi all, longtime player here trying to come up with a brew for my first Standard deck. I wanted to come up with a deck using powerful but underplayed cards to have a fun FNM level deck without breaking the bank on Tier 1 Good Stuff. Kamahl's Druidic Vow stood out to me as a card fitting that description so I am attempting to brew up a deck for it! I would love any criticism, questions, or ideas, especially since I'm new to Standard.
Here's what I have so far (v1.3):
Maybeboard:
Growing Rites of Itlimoc
Hadana’s Climb
Skysovereign
Mox Amber
Baird (sideboard)
Edit 6/11/18: Cleared several cards from the maybeboard through testing, updated the maindeck and added a sideboard (which is a work in progress).
6/21: Updated decklist. Ruinous Blast out of the maindeck, more planeswalkers in.
Nice work Phone, my advise or tip is try watering down the paints more, keeping them moist either with a wet pallet or keep dipping the brush tip in water and mixing it because acrylic dries fast. That way the texture will be more smooth. Ignore if you like it that way
Here are some of my recent alters.
These are all for my cube. The shock set has the symbols from the online only version.
Sideboard could have some more Aetherspouts, Counterspells, the new Clone, Kheru Spellsnatcher, ... needs more help vs. aggro decks, maybe Hornet Nests or other sources of deathtouch?
To clarify, Secret Plans and Trail of Mystery both stack if you have multiple copies right? Seems like having 4 of each would be one of the main reasons to play this deck so we can really get an engine going in the mid-game.
I have a budget RG build I'm using until I have the fetches for a third (or fourth) color. I'm using Commune with the Gods which digs pretty deep and finds Assault as well as sideboard enchantments and creatures. I'm going away from the aggro plan a bit to run more lands (4 tec. edge 1 ghost quarter, manlands). Since you have 5 white fetches you could play budget WRG with Knight of the Reliquary, potentially Path to Exile or something, maybe some sideboard cards.
Most people don't run Tormod's Crypt, so generally we would be comparing Spellbomb to Surgical Extraction. I think perhaps you are overestimating the power of 8rack to get people into a hard lock where you can durdle around using 5 mana and another land in Modern just to clear a graveyard and recur your spell. Most opponents would kill you one way or another while you spend your resources to do this. Running niche tricks in the maindeck also has the negative effect of giving you worse opening hands, mulligans, and dead draws. It's not only one card either if you are running a blue splash with both Ruins etc, that's a lot of cards that do nothing in many early game situations. Of course you are free to run a rogue list and prove us wrong, but you need extensive testing and winning tournament play before there is weight behind your theory. Granted I'm an amateur 8rack player as well without tournament experience yet but that's my take on it.
I've done some testing with it last year, my conclusion was that it's too fragile against Miracles and not good enough against other decks to dedicate SB space. Against RUG for example, do you really want to dump your entire hand to make 1 'Goyf? Pretty sure your opponent can do better. You don't need it against Deathblade.
Tyran't Choice seems like it would be good in Modern but not legal there I think. Doubt I would splash for that in Legacy Burn because of sorcery speed and no other good splash cards in the color.
Firewall, obviously that went well for you - what do you think of Eidolon? What did you play against?
Short answer: yes. You can get a little ahead of yourself with how fast you feel the deck is when you're just goldfishing and testing against yourself and friends. In tournaments there always seems to be more interaction and challenging games. Try doing a good deal of testing against a proxy RUG deck. Vortex also gives you game against Griselbrand, which definately feels good. However it's up to you how all-in you want to be, based on your read of the meta and your personal style. I've avoided fetches and Grim personally because they haven't been worth it in testing for me but obviously many disagree. Last tournament I trimmed down to 2 Vortex in the main with a third in the sideboard to speed the deck up. I also have won several games against Leyline of Sanctity, as well as active Chalice of the Void on 1. You could just hope to avoid all those cards, but again it's up to play style, I like to have options and not feel helpless against bombs.
Burn got 8th in the Legacy Open today I just noticed. He played 2 Pyromancers over 2 of the Sulfuric Vortex, and a Satyr over the 20th land, also included 2 Barbarian Ring. Just always good to see! He said it was his first Legacy tournament. You never know!
There are such a wide variety of sub-archetypes within Aggro Loam! I have lurked for awhile while building a GR version with Crusher and ~36-40 lands. I'm curious if you folks think Eidolon of the Great Revel could have a place in a deck like this. Obviously it wouldn't be good in the Pyromancer versions of the deck but in a GR one with more lands and more focus on Assault it seems like it could work well with manlands (don't trigger Eidolon) and Assault/Loam (take 2, deal 6). Oracle of Mul Daya is also out of range. Perhaps Spellskite is simply better in that slot if I need something to cause problems for casters of small spells.
If we are hypothetically running 8-12 non-hasty creatures, is there another good way to make them better than Reckless Charge? Another thought is, perhaps Eidolon ought to replace Flame Rift if it makes the MD to account for the life loss to ourselves.
