I've played with both the black and blue splash and they both have merit. I'm back to black for the simple reason that Pontiff has been more effective for me than Staticaster.
Sower seems too fragile for the investment unless there is already an GE Archmage/skite on the field. Most of the things I would want Sower for can also be targeted by Reflector Mage for 1 CMC cheaper.
Against the mill deck you can mulligan pretty aggresively as it can buy you a little extra time by having a larger number of cards in your deck. The matchup is usually a race that Scavenging Ooze is the key to, so aim for that or an evo in your opener. You can eat your own creatures to get a very large ooze and protect from a crypt incursion blowout. Also as of the sideboarding rules change for M14, you don't have to sideboard 1-for-1 anymore...so you can actually board in your full 15 which usually works out to an extra 2 turns average worth of mill(not saying this is correct but is an option).
How often are you all finding that you are boarding in the 4th Path to Exile if you are running it in the sideboard? I feel like the 2x lightning helix and shriekmaw covers the bases for removal, but that may not be correct as the path is 1 mana removal.
Trying a split of Wall of Omens and Wall of Roots, as sometimes I've found the mana ramp to be more useful than the extra card depending on the situation.
I can definitely respect that assessment, especially given your current list which unless I am missing it doesn't really have any card draw...so your likelihood of casting as a miracle is increased. Courser may harm it against decks with counters as they know exactly when hold counter mana.
Bonfire is less impressive in decks with lots of card draw as the miracle option is reduced quite a bit (and is half as effective)... Banefire is a nice uncounterable option and can go over the top in situations that Kessig wouldn't quite go all the way.
@purklefluff
In response to your addition of Bonfire of the Damned, have you considered Banefire?
For the amounts we usually (hopefully) are going to be be hitting X for its nice to know that the spell will not be countered, though it doesn't have the benefit of hitting all their creatures as well, it just ends games.
