vI'vee tried the dredge version and I like it. However, I like the reanimator junk strategy a little more. Should discussion be here or in its own thread ? Here is what I'm running and my sideboard is really generic. Using other bombs because I don't have shadowborn demons.
i haven't kept up with Born of the gods as i've been playing hearthstone but i think I'm going to concentrate on this archetype for my FNMs till the next set rolls out. Don't have shadowborn demons or herald of torments -- i assume both are very important to the archetype? Shoudln't be too hard to get the heralds but the demons might be rough to come by.
so i have been playing creatureless oloro stax for a while now
some advice i have for you
your board wipes should be in the form of tucks, exiles, and situational
merciless eviction, hallowed burial, austere command, evacuation are the best
also, sphere of safety is outstanding.... it isnt too cute at all esp when u are destroying lands via armageddon, catastrophe, mana vortex
land equilibrium is nasty when u have a token producer like bitterblossom, luminarch ascension and/or planeswalkers and you blow up the lands... u dont play a land they cant play any either = you win
thran dynamo needs to go
porphyryr nodes needs to go also bc u stated tht u produce tokens to keep it around all game... meaning ur card is destroying your own stuff NOT GOOD
edit*** the other tuck options you have are spin into myth, unexpectedly absent, hallowed burial, spell crumple
thanks for the advice and as soon as i get the chance i will be implementing some of those changes! thanks for reassurance on sphere of safety.
You really need to cut down the fat creatures in this deck, focus on 3-6 big creatures you want to see every game. I understand you don't want to make this hyper competitive, but a few Wood Elves type creature would help your curve. You want most of your business spells at 2/3 mana not 4/5. That would mean you are doing nothing for 3-4 turns without any ramp spell.
Even getting an early Signet and Solemn Simulacrum would speed up the clock in this list.
I'd suggest adding some ramp like Nature's Lore, Cultivate/Kodama's Reach, Krosan Tusker, Wood Elves, Yavimaya Elder, Sakura Tribe-Elder for land ramp spells. As for mana ramp, I would add Sol Ring, Mana Vault 3 Signets, R/G Talisman, Darksteel Ignot, and possible Coalition Relic.
That might seem like a lot, but those spells will smooth out bad hands with 2 lands and random mana ramp spell.
Big bombs in BUG, I would suggest Jin, Sheoldred, Sylvan Primordial and 3 others.
As in the deck's actually play, I would go U/B with a splash of green. Blue/Black is the superior colour combination, green really needs those two colours to excel to it's glory that the average EDH has preached for so long.
I know my opinion is biased since I dislike green, blue, and white. I grew up playing Red/Black, so I play mass discard, edict effects, spot removal, utility creatures, mana ramp, and tutors. You notice how creatures aren't in that list? Creatures are a crutch in a BUG list that can win off a turn 6 Tooth and Nail or turn 3 Entomb + Exhume/Animate/Reanimate for Jin.
I'm playing most of the stuff u suggested... I will definitely add yavimaya elder and tooth and nail for sure though
I would cut Sphere of Safety; it's too cute, and it only works in the most casual metas.
It's good your curve is very low already, if you don't want to run Jin, that's fine. It was a suggestion. Show and Tell is amazing, proxy it up. It will win you the game if you turn 0 Leyline and you cast it turn 3 with Helm of the Obedience in hand with open mana. You can Helm/Line whoever you want if you feel like being a jerk to your friends.
Well I own both cards so I can play em certainly. But in my limited testing with the deck I rarely find myself with 10 mana to cast it unless the game has gone like literally 2.5 hours.
I see what u are saying though and I wouldn't mind testing it for a while. I just like how myojin is a little more resilient and clears the way immediately for my enchant win con's. On the other hand a jin that does one time around the board on turn 3 pretty much is straight win.
Edh is a funny thing. My meta has some decks like bruna or room, and then there are guys running sharruum with combo or kiki+exarch kind of stuff.
I was running creaturless oath initially but people were kind of upset with turn 3/4 wins with counter back up (yet they running kiki-pestermite?)
I sense their disgust with stax this past week but I think it actually takes some planning and forethought to pilot correctly. Certainly not free wins with everyone ganging up on you.
Of all the edh decks I've played in my limited experience, I find this the most "fair" in terms of interaction and definitely the most fun.
I would suggest either Propaganda or Ghostly Prison if you're confidant in your other stax effects. Redundancy is nice but unless your meta is creature heavy I think you only need one.
Side note: Did you really need to cut the pristine talisman for a rock that color fixes? Do you often get color screwed? Maybe it's just me but I always seem to get Talisman and Well of Lost Dreams together which turns talisman into "tap, draw a card and gain a life" essentially. Of course I think I might be developing a problematic obsession with card draw. My Oloro deck is starting to turn into one giant card draw engine.
My meta is pretty creature heavy, but I can see me cutting sphere of safety as it rarely impacts the board the way I'd like it to.
I opted for obelisk simply because if I was gonna spend three on a mana rock, I wanted it to make all my colors. If anything I can go back to another Tasman or signet. Pristine talisman is cool but win-more in my opinion.
You said this list had combo elements right?
Turn 3 Show and Tell, Jin is GG against bad players. If you decimate the right player's hand with Mind Twist, you are safe to run out Show and Tell.
I kind of dont want to add two cards to accomplish an effect when I could play one card to accomplish both. I'll-gotten gains is something I've been considering as well as necrogen mists but I find it very hard to use necrogen mists effectively. Is there an artifact that does something similar to myojin?
Here is my slightly competitive damia list. I don't put infinite combos and I have eldrazi I'm here simply to combat mill strategies in my meta. Most wins come from games going long and just getting constant value through havengul lich + prophet of kruphix.
I want to drop Jin gitaxias (too OP when reanimated) and whip of erebos for ulamog/consecrated sphinx / tooth and nail
If there is a 4 Cmc or less card that I should be running, let me know. Open to suggestions.
I want the deck to be good but not to the point where my opponents feel like its too strong.
I finally got to get games in with my finalized deck list. All i can say is that stax is a really debilitating archetype.
The hardest thing to do in this deck though is end the game. There haev been games where I could easily lock people out with smokestack but against friends this seems, "too competitive".
Many times I've voluntarily sacrificed smokestack or static orb or something, just to give my opponents a chance to get into the game.
I used to not like cataclysm, but I definitely feel it has a place. As a late game answer when you are behind on board position, it can turn things around in a jiffy.
What i want to make room for, is a card that forces my opponents to lose their hands so that I can resolve my win cons with very little chance of removal/counter. Or maybe even something that gives enchantments hexproof/indestructibility?
should I put boseiju in?
REally enjoy the deck, I just wish that I had a better I win button so that my friends don't feel so dejected when I lock them out of the game LOL.
You are most likely right. Grave Titan, Nim Deathmantle, and Helm of Obedience are all cards that I'm half a step away from finding room for in order to get some stronger win cons in the list. The question is just what to remove that: (a) doesn't weaken the stax/control aspect of the list; and (b) makes up for the fact that the mana cost of these cards is relatively high.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, if you have your list posted on these boards somewhere, feel free to link it. If not, feel free to post it here. I'm no expert on anything, but I'd be glad to look over it and offer whatever advice I can. Deckbuilding/brainstorming is probably my favorite aspect of MTG.
Basically, the deck would function just fine without him, but functions SO MUCH better with him. I, in particular, like it when decks work that way with relation to their commander.
Feel free to ask any other questions you may have, though. Stax is a unique archetype, and it's taken me over a year of playing with the various synergies you see in stax decks to start to understand their power.
I appreciate it. EDH is pretty new to me in general, and I just finished building an oloro stax list, but i just put together a bunch of stuff from the stax primer, so i dont really know how good the deck is. For sure my friends are disappointed by how limiting it is to them, but yeah.
i'll probably try to create somethign vetry similar to this if i can get my hands on some of these cards.
Cool stuff you got here! I defeinitely think u need grave titan though. or some kind of finisher.
im just posting in here because i saw your post in the stax primer. I was wondering how integral your general was to your deck? I mean, why not use erebos or just something else? I understand that the recursion is a nice thing, but I"m certain there are other options out there in mono black right?
PS: this card is $100 for this general on ebay?! yikes! at least the promo is affordable.
oops!

Good advice. Myojin is easier to cast and more resilient than Jin. Just don't know what I pull out to put it in.
