If the ability is mandatory then you could always use things like Sensei's Diving top to stack the top cards. I think that if the ability is optional then the card is too good. I agree that most likely the changes will be made to fit a block mechanic or theme.
I could see a textless Llanowar Elves, though there would probably still be a P/T box at the bottom of the card. And given that the elves are going to be reprinted... I think that makes them a likely candidate.
That being if textless creatures would be printed at all.
How about a card that gives a target creature +0/+X Until EOT? Or, if they wanted to make something better, all blocking creatures you control gain +0/+X until EOT.
I am just trying to think of something different than life gain/damage prevention/etc...
Reasonable, and it'd see play; but sadly if it's X, not X or less, then it'd be pretty useless...
I figured if such a card saw print it would be 'equal to x' and not 'x or less' because:
1. as you said, it makes the card pretty useless, kind of like the counterspell, and 'free' cards shouldn't be insane
2. it keeps with what we know about the other ones so far; that being that the cards are equal to x
I do agree with you though, I would like to see such a card be x or less... I just don't think it would happen
If I remember the book, didn't Toshi use reflective magic a lot? So a card could reasonably have as an ability that allows damage dealt to Toshi to be redirected to the source for a certain cost, be it life or mana.
How about a Regrowth variant? I am thinking along the lines of a card that allows you to return a card with CMC x or maybe x or less. Nostalgic Dreams was part of a cycle, so could this be reasonable?
