In a meta full of Jace and Gideons, i don't think he is that effective. In fact, your opponent would be stupid to tempo himself by equipping knowing you have an untapped leveled guul draz, this is the case where instant like doom blade would be a better choice. The mana cost can be divided in via installments but it also gives your opponent time to play around it and think before committing.
He is v likely to get out tempo-ed via removal/sweeper and you just spent mana to time walk yourself for a turn. Also, the only deck that is viable and plays black right now are UWb/ub control/vampires. I don't think UWb or u/b wants it because of the risk of out tempo-ing yourself is too huge in a control deck. And as for vampires, i think they are better off using Arc Trails and Gatekeepers.

This issue exists in every single game and he feels the need to point it out ? There is nothing anyone can do about it, really. Thrun won't ever be the last troll in MTG.
