I'm excited at the idea of playing again. I miss the competitiveness and the fun I had with the community.
Financially, I don't have much to worry about. I have set asside plenty of "hobby dollars" that can cover cards and events, I just wanted to make sure the game is still going strong before I jump back it.
One last question. Whats the viability of control? I checked out the forums and saw that solar flare was still around. That was the last deck I played before I left! Is it a safe bet?

Id like the start by saying that I haven't played magic since 2007. I was a very competitive player, and I enjoyed fnm and going to the bigger events within driving distance. Then college came along, and could no longer afford to play or had the time to play. Well, I'm about to graduate, just accepted a great job, and will be moving home soon.
If I came back, I would do so to play standard competitively. I would buy the cards needed to play with the best, and I would do so in hopes of one day winning a PTQ and going to a pro tour.
Basically, my questions are these: is it worth the investment? How is the standard metagame? when I left, fairies was king, and there was little diversity. How is the magic community? Did it survive the ecomomic slump?

Here's why Green Bay can beat New England in the SuperBowl come Arizona...
1) They have two all star cornerbacks in Harris and Woodson. If both healthy, which seems to be the aim, they can hold down Stallworth and Moss 1on1, which means Wes Welker can get special attention out of the slot. This is because GB can create a pass rush with 4-6 guys and does it well.
2) GB has 5 wide receivers at Madden level 80 of better OVL. Yes, i took it to Madden stats. Driver is a Number 1 receiver, Greg Jennings has proven the same as he is the neo Javon Walker. Figure in the old Seahawks number 1 Koren Robinson, hotshot rookie James Jones, and the TE Lee (sit down Franks) and you have the most lethal 5 WR slots game ever. The Eagles did it with 3-4 WR, never once having the 5 man spread. Can you imagine Favre tearing up the middle of the field? You'd have to respect him, which is when the big play would open up.
3) Ryan Grant and the run game is only getting better. Say what you want and what you will, but it only takes some fluky good back to show up (Frank Gore, Tatum Bell, etc) to really make a run game patchwork, but workable.
4) If Brett Favre is healthy, he is undoubtedly and undeniably one of the best 'big game' QBs all time.
So in a nutshell, GB could beat NE. They could lose too, but it wouldnt be like a 21 pt loss by some other popcorning team.
1. No one in the league can handle randy 1on1 with tom brady passing it to him. Without safety help, randy will score at will on the go route. And yeah, the packers can get a good rush with 4-6 people, but the patriots have one of best o-lines in the league, and tom brady still has one of five different routes he can look to every play.
2. Moss, stallworth, welker, gaffney, and watson might be just as good, if not better....Whatever favre does to the pats defense, brady will do right back.
3. neither team cares to run the ball, and its hard to tell which team does it better. The pats can put in one of three different backs in and do fine.
4. Tom Brady is pretty frickin' good in the big game as well. Hes got like 28 (probably more, i havent researched it, but thats the number i last remembered) game winning/tying drives of his own, and hes blown a 4th quarter lead once. And just because brett is a big game player, doesnt mean the rest of his inexperienced team is.
I like the packers, and would love to see them go all the way, but the patriots are more experienced, have a defense that can be exploited, but shows up in the clutch, and tom brady, who makes it look so easy.

Video taping "scandal" aside, I'm very happy with my Patriots. They're looking too good this year. Tom Brady is set to have one of his best years yet as they've outscored their first 3 opponents 114 to 35. Brady to Moss is going to have the same connotations as Montana to Rice after this year is up. Looks to me like we have a 4th Super Bowl victory for the mighty Patriots coming this year.
Your boys will get there, but lose to the packers. Its (finally) bretts last year, and hes going out with a bang.

Sorry, but who are you? I know I misplayed last year when I was terrible, but I think I played well this year. Do you mind pointing out what I did wrong this year, since you are obviously such a master?
I had multiple people I know watching a lot of my games, and the only time my play was questioned is when I took a Numot with Court Hussar when it may have not been the best choice, but I still think it could have been the best play. Other than that, the people watching my games said that I played about as good as possible.
I didnt watch anyy of your games, but congrats regardless.

I qualified for the mss the night before in the open going 5-2.
The next day at the mss and start out 4-0 getting featured for the 4th. I then play against the dude that won the entire thing, get beat in game three because he hit a well timed cyroclasm that put me a turn behind.
so now im 4-1, then get rolled by dredge because i cant win that match unless my opponent gets caught on one land the entire game. I then fold again to some kid who came in like 11th who was playing solarflare.
So at 4-3, i decided to drop. I know i could have still made the money(or scholarships, i guess) but i was extremely tired, having not gotten any sleep the previous two nights. I wasnt frustrated, and still dont regret dropping, because 3 days of magic is just too much for me.
oh yeah, i was playing angelfire.
Things i would do differently if i were to do it again:
1. Play a deck that can win game one. I was 0-7 in game ones. Always having to worry about time and playing in a third game every single match was extremely taxing.
2. Tested. I played a deck that i had just picked up from a friend the night before, and didnt even look at it until saturday. Bogardan hellkites were terrible. I sided them out every single match.
Overall, im more than satisfied with me performance, as that was only my second and third nonfnm tournement (regionals was the first). Hope to see you all there again next year.

@Crappy removal: What player plays a deck that even runs Martyr of the Ashes? It's a control card, so the red-burn-heavy aggro players don't use it... what red control decks are there? Let along Martyr of the Ashes in the first place? Players would rather just run Pyroclasm, as it doesn't require revealing information about your hand, or requiring having a very weak creature on the table that can be Sudden Shocked or even Sudden Death'd.
Id just like to point out that Sadins R/g deck, which is arguably the best aggro deck in the t2, ran martyr of ashes. Martyr will be played at nationals as a foil to the troll.
On topic, the troll worse than it was before, but its still house, and you better be sure that you can deal with it when you sit down to play.

I won the draft with a 3-0-1 record with a sick u/w deck with a bunch of counters, dehydrations, pacifisms, two air elementals and a denizen of the deep.
I 0-2 dropped in the main sealed event, because i got 4 angelic blessing, and played them in the deck thinking they were instants. Much to my surprise, they arent instants, and are completely terrible.

Ive played 61, and feels its perfectly acceptable if the 61st card is a land in a control deck. In an aggro deck, it dilutes the percentages, and through out the day of a tourny, it will effect you and cause you problems atleast once.
However, sometimes, i feel that 24 lands jsut isnt enough, and im not willing to cut a spell for that 25th land. In that situation, adding a land doesnt hurt all that bad, and with all the draw power of a control deck, i dont think its entirely noticable.
And this kinda goes along with what i said earlier, but if i had to choose, id say horizon canopy/mindstone makes the perfect 61st card.

Disclaimer: I have only read the first 3 books and am not an avid harry potter fan. The only information i know is what ive gathered from the other movies.
I thought the movie was god awful. Id give it a 3/10 at best.
I have my reasons, but dont know how to use spoiler tags, so i cant put them in here.

I can't imagine that will cost anything more than 40
