Yeah, I felt that cryptic's were to slow too, untill I tried one MD, and then two. And now I am pretty sure they are my MVP's in this deck.
I play more of a tempo version, so by the time I have the mana for Cryptic Command I don't really want to go off comboing. I know it sounds strange, it sounded to me too the first time I read the posts from Dargaud. But I tried to do things his way (not entirely, though), and added Lavamancer's and Command's, man I even took off 1 Twin (to me that was unthinkable). And now I know what he meant. Most of the time, I don't even need to combo. Just by attacking with Pestermite's and Clique and giving that last push with the Lavamancer. The opponent just starts to feel cornered and has to destroy them; if he does, I have the combo as a backup and he has no more hate; if he doesn't... well, he dies.
That happens sideways, too.
I know that Dismember punishes me a lot, but i really need strong removal at instant speed. Idk, maybe I can try Slash again, to see how it goes.
About the PainLands, I love Shivan Reef, I know Sulfur Falls is better and all, but I've started a couple games with 1 Reef, 1 Serum Visions, + Great Cards and no more mana. That way for 1 life I can cast Visions and fix the mana issue, and stay in game with a great hand. With Sulfur Falls I would need to wait till the next turn. And for the rest of the game, Reef's just give me colorless mana.
Hmm, that's an interesting role to take with twin. It's funny though, my last round in the PTQ was the twin mirror, and I actually did win one game just tempoing out and beating down with pestermites for the win. He wouldn't tap mana, so I didn't tap any either... Then snuck in the pestermites, my flame slash's outshined his main deck bolts taking out his spellskites, tapped down his pestermites as he tried to block with my decievers, etc... But I won that match because of my agressive dispels. The game came down to me dropping kiki on a deciever while he had a spellskite, I top decked the land to go to 6 with 1 card in hand, and he asked "you got the dispel?" When most decks are just trying t play around the combo, leaving just enough mana up for their removal dispels are huge. also mizzium skin. I ran 5-6 MB at the ptq and didn't regret them one bit. One of my worst matchups in testing was against UWR Midgrange and dispel just shines there.
I do like the appeal of the lavamancers, but they have just been bad in testing for me. Perhaps that's more of a meta difference... who knows... I've tried them out... I'm heading to an event tonight, I think I might try your style out, but without the dismembers and pain lands... I have never really had a terrible time with seeing my sources early. Sometimes its seeing the 3 red by 5 for kiki, but cascade bluffs helps with that.
Hi guys,
I've been using a Twin version that looks a lot like Dargaud's one, with some exceptions. I've been doing fairly well (beating 8 in every 10 decks, more or less) and the only bad matchup that I can really point is Fish (Merfolk). It's disgusting, if I ever won to someone with that, was for pure luck.
I always seem to beat them in counter wars (with Dispels), but the aggro is to much for me to handle.
Yeah, I run a similar list to you guys as well. I went 5-3 at the PTQ about a month or so ago, with 2 really close losses. I played a u/w tron list that I felt like I had no chance against. MY list goes
The 1 Repeal is really just a flavor choice instead of running 4 remands. Has come in handy once or twice... bouncing a geist token for U and drawing a card instead of taking 4 is not bad if nothing else. I feel like Flame slash's over lightning bolts is the call, as we don't really care about hitting face, and would much rather be able to kill something bigger for our same investment... It helps kill spellskites in the mirror, as well as being able to take down lin vala's, and UWR's resto-beats. It has a bit better chance of taking down a goyf as well.
Mizzium skins are to fight abrupt decays, as it's our only really good answer for that, also can beat SB combust's. Dispels aplenty in the main, as they HAVE to deal with our combo t4-5-6 pretty much every game at instant speed, so having a dispel at all times usually seals games. Protecting spellskites early can really be worth it.
Twisted Image deals with people who try to board in skites/the mirror, as it kills the skits and draws a card for 1 mana, which is huge.
Academy Ruins to recycle Spellskites and Engineered Explosives post board can be game winning. When they have to keep wasting their removal on the same spellskite you draw every turn, they run out pretty quick.
My build is a very aggressive build that wants to be dropping combo t4, or t5-t6 with dispel/mizzium backup every game, or at least be able to threaten it. Throwing t-3 pester's and decievers just to eat removal so next turn I drop it with dispel. Clearly this plan doesn't always work, as your oppenent's deck usually has some form of interaction, but it is quite consistent in it's play.
Amganave, how much damage are your lands doing to you in that matchup? With 4 Steam Vents and 10 Fetches I'd be hesitant to be playing 4 Shivan Reef as well, those would strictly be better as Sulfur Falls, in my opinion. Coupled again with 2 Dismember's that you are always casting for 4 life you are doing a fair share to yourself I imagine. I also feel cryptic is too slow for this deck. By the time you have cryptic mana you want to be comboing off anyways.
I'm really liking something like this for game day. I like grindy decks, but I don't really want to play esper right now. Mutilate is the best sweeper we have so building a deck with that in mind is key I believe. I haven't been playing all that much standard lately as I've been gearing up for a modern ptq in a couple weeks, Though I did watch a bunch of PT Montreal this weekend, and played FNM last week, but with my buddies deck.
This is Veeeeeeeeeery close to a list I ran a few weeks ago. Mine was something like
-1 Garruk
-1 Abrupt Decay
-3 Golgari Keyrun
-1 Sans of Delerium
-1 Demonic Rising
+2 Underworld Connections
+2 Thragtusk
+3 Sign in Blood
or thereabouts... I'm really intrigued by the Sands of Delirium, how did you find that to work? I really like the Revelations combo with Elixir. I had one game, where I stalled out, cast it, then Next turn played like, a Thragtusk a Lilianna and a Vraska all on one turn. GG
I really like this style of deck and am thinking of playing it again this week. We'll see where some tweaking leads me.
Why has no one mentioned Martial Law, or Security Blockade?
Being able to detain a creature every turn seems really good. And security blockade, bringing up your enchantment count, giving you a dude, and slowing down some clocks? Seems like a lot of work for one card.
I've been thinking of a similar idea for some time, and these seem to be almost auto-includes of some capacity. I was definitely thinking in different colors though, Esper I think would be good.
Underworld Connections seems like it fits well, more enchantment and draw, as well as a couple Curse of Deaths Hold, if you go into these colors, heck, even Stab Wound is almost playable if you are going for a life-loss win con (I think the Esper opens up milling very nicely though).
I hate how awesome the new Jace is, because it can really be annoying in the control matchup if you are trying to mill with a Memory Adept, but Increasing confusion can be very good, especially in a stall-y kind of deck. My Local shop still plays extended, and I was playing a Turbo fog deck, and found increasing confusion to be a house.
Taking a quick look through the sets, i see a few options, I too am kind of feeling that way running BG right now. MY buddies UW control deck gives it a pretty hefty time. Hard to deal with resolved planeswalker.
From what I see we have at least these for options,
Vorapede, Undying is nice after a board sweep, and vigilance to boot
Desecration demon, can be a dead card against zombies, almost what we're looking for...
Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis seems not too terrible, if you want to be casting that high
Necropolis Regent also seems good. Can be a pretty fast clock. Also has evasion. also a 6cc though
Shimian spectre taking cards and evading also seems not bad to eat away, especially if you are running hawks as well.
Elderscale worm and Primordial hydra both seem troublesome should an opponent not have removal, both can have trample as well. Might be able to survive a mutilate as well.
Demonic taskmaster actually seems not bad in some of the lists, especially the ones that are light on creatures. 4/3 flyer for 3 seems not bad. Definitely not meant for most lists though.
Griselbrand. Would probably rather be casting army. But he is still a beast.
Harvester of Souls, 5/5 DT, and killing stuff draws cards. And killing stuff is something this deck does well.
Marrow Bats is ok. Gets wrecked by a slip though. 4 life isn't bad if you are runnign 4 thragtusks and/or nighthawks anyways. Probably not the best choice.
Soul of the Harvest can also be netting some cards while also being a presence.
Wolfir Silverheart brings a hefty 12 power to the board for 5 mana if you have something to pair with. Garruk tokens anyone?
Bloodline Keeper might be okay, doesn't see the best though
Bloodgift Demon. This guy might be getting somewhere...5/4 Evasion, with a phyrexian arena built in? For 5 mana? Probably one of the higher picks on the list.
Reaper from the Abyss could also be good in control oriented lists, turning all your kill spells into two for ones.
You make one helluva deck. I made a proxy deck to fool around with, do a bit of testing using your list (I'm in the market for a deck for Game Day on saturday). Wow. WOOOOOW.
I really liked your entire post, and all the responses you have doled out in this thread. Underworld connections IS retarded good. Veil works really well in this deck. It absolutely astounds me how often I get to +1 and pitch a land with a 22 LAND DECK, and have still almost curved into an army turn 8.
I'm a similar player to you I think, in that I generally gravitate towards control, and this deck just feels great.
I'm probably expecting a large turnout of BAnt Control (we had proivincials a few weeks ago, 6 from top 8 were bant) and Rakdos zombies/aggro. What kind of changes would you make expecting a large number of those decks to be there? Or sideboard plans?
After a very interesting limited game against safety spheres release weekend, (managed to launch party his palisade giant then swing with a 3/3 trample for 8 mana every turn to win it lol) I've been thinking about a deck running these.
I feel Esper would be a great start. You have access to
Underworld Connections
Detention Sphere/O-ring
Arrest
Guilt of Burden
Martial Law
Security Blockade!!!
Soul Tithe
Shrieking Affliction/Stabwound if you wanted lo life them instead of mill.
Plus the plethory of curses already available to us.
4 Steam Vents
3 Scalding Tarns
3 Blood Crypts
3 Drowned Catacombs
4 Sulfur Falls
3 Dragonskull Summit
4 Mountains
3 Islands
For SB I'm thinking some sort of combo of
3-4 Duress/Inquisitions
3 Spellskite
2 Slaughter Games (try and hit theirs? lol)
Maybe a couple pyro's and another slagstorm for aggro.
Or something like that.
My Grixis List was
2 Nico Bolas
1 Grave Titan
1 Consecrated Sphinx
1 Inferno Titan
1 Wurmcoil Engine
1 Olivia Voldaren
1 Rakdos Return
1 Tamiyo, The Moon Sage
3 Jace Belaran
4 Mana Leak
2 Lightning Bolt
2 Black Sun Zenith
2 Curse of Deaths Hold
3 Dreadbore
3 Think Twice
3 Snapcaster mage
2 Bonfire of the Damned
1 Into to Roil
My local Card shop plays extended every week on the day me and most of my buddies don't work, so we usually play extended every week.
Some decks that I've been seeing that you haven't listed.
Grixis-Control
dreadbores
jaces
rakdos return
gave titan
wurmcoil
inferno titan
nico bolas
mana leaks etc.
I went 2-2 with it this week, should have been 3-1.
a U/W list won it this week, with another bant list going second that were somewhat similar, both using supreme verdicts and detention spheres.
the U/W was runnigns tamiyos, gideons, an entreat or two, the new jace, cyclonic rifts.
The bant was running thragtusks and resto angels and a couple vensers.
Those were both the decks I lost to as well... :/
Zombies are good. B/R or B/G, my buddy even used to take U/B zombies and did quite well, didn't really lose much with alara rotating. And the land bases make some of these decks nuts.
There was also someone playing a proliferate lux cannon deck (always fun), as well as a Junk reanimator that was pretty nice. Grisly salvages and mulches go a long way. Lotleth troll can add an aggro feel to it when you want to be the beatstick too.
There were also two tempered steels. One splashing red for bonfires. Both of them ended up losing to the U/W that my best friend was piloting.
Wall of Tanglecord went in simply because its got a nice fat 6 toughness for 2 mana which really helped against early aggro. Proliferate also seems a little slow but that's just me. We're also thinking about switching out Ponder for Disperse we were thinking of using it to bounce a clasp then replay it for another -1/-1 counter or just use it defensively against attackers.
Really? I have no problems getting my lux cannons off. But they are also one of the most expensive CMC cards in my deck. I also run like 3 contagion clasps, 3 Steady progress, and 4 Tezzeret's Gambits. along with the full set of nodes. There is no shortage of proliferating. And also run inkmoth's. Getting one of those through spells death even if I don't find my grindclocks.
Also Chimeric mass's. They can become a decent blocker pretttttty fast.
Jace's archivist really helps if you are playing lots of cheap **** to set up early. And make's it a lot easier dropping control early and 1-for-1'ing at the beginning. I usually end up on the winning side... and even if I'm not... its 5-6 card mill for one mana every turn if they don't deal with it, on top of my grindclocks, which they usually can't because guess what? I just filled my hand with a new set of cards.
why does everything run liliana? You only have 2 cards that really utilise her +1 ability, other than sun titan recurring things. she seems a bit out of place here.
Oooh yeah, Thrun's a paaain. He's the reason I MB a black sun zenith in my version of solar flare.
How important are you finding beast within? Its the one LD I don't really want to run, as I don't want to/have a good way to consistently deal with the tokens.
Usually if a Slagstorm is necessary, all my dorks are crispy critters already, or the game has progressed beyond my need for them. They're really there to help me explode out of the gates, with a turn 3 LD spell; with 25 land, I have an easy enough time keeping up mana-wise, even with them toasted. Same with the rest of my dudes. If Slagstorm is necessary, then obviously my board presence isn't doing the job.
Thanks for the feedback. Makes me less hesitant to run board wipers in my version. Sometimes you just HAVE to DoJ. haha.
