Question: How do you believe the release of Modern Masters would affect the general public if 0% or zero of the cards within it had never been before released in the past like how they are now and how might these "new" cards affect pre-existing formats?
Rule: For the sake of the experiment I simply ask that one would refrain from being rude towards others for in this case having a valid opinion as long as that opinion is not "trollish".
RoN seems at first a pretty cool idea but the amount of control you have with it and the speed of the game is what hurts it.
It would need to be a Rare at least to have a casting cost of B. Since if RoN is not in your opening hand and it could potentially cost 3-4 mana that may be a bad top deck if your opponent is pretty close to-if not already in top deck mode as well.
Lets say the RoN's effect was instead:
Whenever an opponent discards a card, choose one - 2/2 Zombie Token, Draw A Card, or BB to Mana Pool.
A lot more reasonable and stronger as you can control what benefit you want out of it. However the mana cost in this situation would have to be higher because of the various advantages it can give.
I'm not a fan of RoN as it doesn't sit well with me. So I voted for BitWC.
I get that its a black parallel to bounty. However what bounty does is reward you for casting anything or even playing a land. So at worst case you lost a card by a counterspell and still got CA.
However this functions like a black punisher card in the form of discard. Unless its random discard, it gives your opponent all the power to give you what you don't need from RoN. This is more luck based than most of reds spells and very situational at best from the benefits one could receive based on deck matchups.
I've simply been infatuated with M14, its a very flavorful set so far from a top-down perspective which is very refreshing. I don't see a potentially $10+ card, I see something I would so enjoy using in a deck.
EDIT: I think the Trained Condor lifts if it can make this whale fly.
Ogre Battledriver 2RR
Creature - Ogre Warrior (R)
Whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control, that creature gets +2/+0 and gains haste until end of turn.
3/3
Lets discuss the possibilities that this ogre can be used for.
One minor rule:
- If its already been said as a possibility do not suggest it again.
This card is a very flavorful homerun from my standpoint.
5/5
After all, if you cast a zero or one casting cost creature spell for instance you just got a 3/3 body to go with it. Any one casting cost noncreature spell becomes a more permanent giant growth for a creature you control. It also rewards you for ramping, imagine if Primeval Titan was around, then you could possibly get 9 life and three lands per turn.
Bonescythe Sliver is superior in casting cost when compared to Fury Sliver, 4 vs 6.
Predatory Sliver is only marginally better than Muscle Sliver because of the You Control part of the text. Otherwise you could run both so you do have close 4-8 Muscle Slivers. It could also be 8-12 if you make it with the Sinew Sliver.
Thorncaster Sliver cannot be compared to because their is no old counterpart for it, so its one of the first new slivers that is not a retreading.
Magic is first, and foremost, a GAME. Nostalgia and flavor are great and all, but if the only way to fulfill those criteria is to jeopardize gameplay, forget it. I'd rather have fun playing the game for months to come than getting that one time fuzzy feeling during card previews.
I do believe that KavuMonarch was referring to how MTG was once done before cutbacks had to be done. In which the MTG blocks would help tell the story that novels also tried to coexist with in order to better represent the world that was currently back then being encountered. In which Storytelling was a larger part of the game when used with the old business model. The easiest example to point to is during the travels of the Weatherlight Crew in which the cards would also help to tell a bit more of the story, although not always accurate, and include in the artwork of the predefined characters of the Weatherlight Crew.
It is a strange occurence in MTG, not one to be celebrated or frowned upon, but to watch and understand in how the Slivers have become changed and where this change will take the tribe as we come to know more of the cards.
Seems like a possibility, though I would like some officially creditable information to prove that Scavenging Ooze is coming in M14 before I place down my judgment on how this will come to affect Standard, Modern, and Limited.
This really sums up why the Slivers tribe got changed. If you read this while applying the context of Slivers, you will get the answer you want out of it. MaRo and the others saw the process of book keeping to be a boring task, and that means that Slivers who involved book keeping are considered a boring race as they were before they were changed.
Quote from Mark Rosewater on NWO »
The role of a designer is to only use what you absolutely have to. If a creation can exist without something, a good designer will take it away. For game design, this means that you want to only leave in the game what is necessary for the game to function. When we boiled down our commons to their bare essence, what we found was that we had made a cleaner game. Instead of focusing on lots of tiny elements that gave you little incremental advantages, you were able to focus on the key things that mattered.
Another way to think about is this: Simplifying the commons took away a lot of bookkeeping. By bookkeeping, I mean the requirement to pay attention to elements of the game that could matter but often don't. In general, bookkeeping is something you want to take out of games. Keeping track of a lot of information is actually an unfun activity, but gamers do it because they are doing their best to win.
I kind of pointed this out before just for counter arguement but if you go to wiki and look up myrmidons, which is a very greek myth creature. Will see that this race was "a loyal follower, especially one who executes orders without question, protest, or pity - unquestioning followers."
They were also made by Zeus for the sake of one of his sons, in which he turned ants into human like beings. And what do slivers and ants have in common is a hive mentality centered around a leader class.
This is hypothesis mind you, but what if there is a human leader this time, would the slivers change and adapt to match their leader?
The possibility does indeed exist and is a sound and logical point. Do you follow and mimic the man who has never seen a battle in his life and is very uncaring for those around him, or do you choose to follow and mimic the war veteran who is also inspiring to look up to? So if the Slivers choose to follow the war veteran, they too would seek to learn how to make themselves stronger.
Also yes, I point out wits and the vedalken as I would say they would be quite interesting choices in set design for a core set.
Do you think wotc would make a block where "creatures matter" wasn't the focus?
Look at RTR block and its new keywords; only 2 or 3 out of the 10 were not creature-based. If Theros has a mechanical theme it will be way more specific than that. Once we know all of m14 we'll be able to make more educated predictions.
Oh most certainly we will be able to make more refined predictions. However its also the most fair guess. When Magic 2011 was being spoiled and the entire set wasn't spoiled yet but we knew of cards like Phylactery Lich, you had two sides. One side said that the set for that year's fall was artifact based and the other side said that it was just an idea that was for grasping straws. Also true that RTR block was creature focused, but so was INN and even more so the real creature centric block Lorwyn/Morningtide than both RTR and INN. After all LOR/MOR had given us Tribal Spells, Kinship, and the various cards that cared about creature or class type.
Vedalken Entrancer, Trading Post, Wit's End, Krenko, Mob Boss. What do these all have in common from Magic 2013? They were all in the set that was setting up the surprises we had come to know in RTR. It has been becoming obvious over the years to spot the bizarre design choices in a core set that is meant for beginners. Which is why one must treat the Magic 20## of whichever year as a trailer for the movie that is set that will be coming in the fall. Its also possible to make a noncreature centric set if Richard Garfield was still at the helm of this card game. After all we have gotten in the past the creature centric set Legions which was 145 cards that were creature-only, which was taking it to an extreme.
Do you refute the point that each core set from 2011-2013 has had a few cards that have acted as sneak peaks into a place we have yet to visit for possibly a second time and that their have been also cards that have acted as red herrings to keep people guessing what the set in fall would be?
They don't really fit the profile of being a sneak peak, as they are too massively represented in the set.
Not as the definitive tribe for Theros as we had no sneak peaks of Werewolves for instance for Innistrad, but a glimpse into what its about. Creatures Matter. The best way to showcase that theme would be what you just suggested. To print many cards that cared about a specific tribe of creatures. With the Shadowborn Apostles and Slivers running about, there is a heavy amount of creature centered focus.
The possibility for Slivers in Theros exists, but it has also always existed in similar way with each block since TSP.
A good possibility is that the slivers and cultists are a representation of Theros without fully giving away the setting. Simply that Theros could just be a creature matters set, like as seen in Legions and the Lorwyn block. In addition their have been various hints like the possibility of Minotaur tribal in Theros from tweets and the larger number of minotaurs in just standard. Which maybe the real key point as to why one would choose to put the creature type Slivers and that this same set of M14 also has Shadowborn Apostle which for those of you unaware, you will be.
Shadowborn Apostle B
Creature - Human Cleric (C)
A deck may have any number of cards named Shadowborn Apostle.
B, sacrifice six creatures named Shadowborn Apostle: Search your library for a Demon card and put that card onto the battlefield. Shuffle your library afterwards.

So in all reality Slivers have every reason to be in a core set in order to act as a sneak peak into this years block in the same way that Hoarding Dragon and Phylactery Lich from Magic 2011, which came out on July 16 of 2010, had served as the sneak peaks into the artifact block known as Scars of Mirrodin which would come out seventy-eight days later on October 1st, 2010.
