I fall in love with this deck since I saw Brad Nelson piloting it this monday on Prenium side, been testing it since on cockatrice and is very strong and fun to play. Against creatures deck it can easily go over them with huge heroic or nivmagus. It lack a bit of removal but hidden string + retraction helix provide a good tempo boost. I think this is a nice list to start brewing with. Bioshift + trait doctoring are the cards that have unimpressed me the most so far, I'm sure we can end up finding something better for those spots.
For the side board I usually put in ordeal of heliod against aggressive matchup, retraction helix/aqueous form against monster and ajani/boros charm/mizzium skin against removal matchup.
I can easily see this deck being top tier, its mulligan better than b/u heroic because it can go more aggressive.
Mono black with white splash for the new 2 cmc exile artifact/enchantment, revoke existence, will be the nuts
Against mono black since its an answer for underworld connection/erebos. Blood baron + sin collector just close the deal.
I personaly see myself more tuned with monoblack splash red for mizzium (blood baron) rakdos return and slaughter game.
pithing needle has been at it's best for me as an aggressive answer to garruk and elspeth. also against esper where they run too many walkers to completely rely on hero's downfall.
I really think the best way to break the mirror is to splash green for stuff like abrupt decay and putrefy. Having abrupt decay also greatly helps the deck's esper matchup. However this change leaves the deck weaker to stuff like GR devotion/monsters and slightly weaker to mono blue, although the fact that abrupt decay can't be countered is somewhat relevant.
Not to forget golgari charm is also very good against mono blue devotion. -1/-1 take care of master of wave and his token + take care of the best card they have against mono black, the bident
Hello, I have been working with B/G since the release of theros and I have made some good result with my The Rock deck (top 16 at my states championship, most of the time top 4 at my LGS fmn's)I want to try something new and work with dévotion. This is the list I'll be playing this friday.
Since my kalonian hydra deck let me down those past week after my top 16 at a state championship I decided to change it.
trying devotion and that what I am currently working on:
Was there any card in your 75 you wish you did not have or wished you had more of?
Was your states more agro or more control?
To be honest, for the moment there is not a single card that I will change from my 75.
The metagame at my states was probably more oriented toward control but they were alots of aggro deck aswell (just to give you a view the top 8 deck were, a dega midrange (that my bro and I built and he was using it), B/w aggro, control enchant u/w, bant control, esper control, Red decks win, B/W control and ?? (dont remember the last one sorry)
My pre sideboard is very good against control and most of the time I won first game, it was more slow against aggro MU but my sideboard just crushed them afterward. I'm really happy using this deck for the moment and I'll probably ''rock it'' to many fmns till I'm bored of it.
The night before the tournament I was thinking of having polukranos + bow instead of kalonian hydra since it dies because of helix/mizzium mortar and polukranos + bow is a good way to deals against aggro MU that vomits their hand on the board, but the synergy with the whip + hydra is just soo great and if I untap with it is almost sure that I am winning.
Added Pharika's cure the night before the tournament and it was very usefull against all those RDW/GW present.
Kalonian hydra is just so good, it a must answer threat and with the whip it gains another life.
My 2 lost were again a mono black which even though I crushed him game 1 I totally mana screwed game 2 and 3.
my other lost was against a B/W/R heavy control where I can't blame my draw but just myself because I did a huge mistake that cost me the round even though I was far ahead in the game.. I read the bones while still having 5 cards in hand and being at 10 life. When I had a board of whip + bounty + kalonian hydra and a beast (had 2 more kalonian hydra in my graveyard) being 8 life I was exposed to 2x warleader helix, which of course he had in hand even though he already used one earlier...
Why no one is considering kalonian hydra in their deck, just like I do? great synergy with the whip if it gets counter or killed swinging for 8 lifelink is good
Very nice job Magikarpz! I may have to get me some Kalonian Hyrda. Out of the above 3 results you are the only one who had a couple Thoughtseize in the MB. Did you ever wish it was something else?
I'd like to ask what you had thought of your removal numbers. Was there any removal you fealt more reliable or wanted than the others? I think the removal numbers are really key in this deck.
Congratulations to all three of you and thank you for your results.
First of all thank you,
For thoughseize I never top decked it vs an empty hand so I must say I was pretty happy with it and was really helpful against a naya midrange matchup where removing a voice and a dragon saved myself.
For the removal I guess it was a good number, doom blade was a dead card in certains matchup but Imnt thinking of removing it at all abrupt decay/héros downfall and putrefy were very good against almost all matchup. Being able to destroy any 3 cmc with abrupt decay saved me a couple of time against chained to the rock or detention sphere. And putrefy helped me remove those nasty whip and spear that were very présent at my LGS. Im consedering having 1 more of both of them in the sideboard instead 2 gaze of granites.
I finished first at my local fmn semi competitive with this list. Vraska was very helpfull against midrange and reamnimator deck. Gaze of granite let me down a bit since theyre were not tokens deck, and if I casted it turn 5 to destroy those 2 mana drop vs aggro deck I were already in bad shape, so I guess I would rather have another 1 for 1 removal instead. I often sided in golgari charm, heros downfall and thouseize.
Kalonian Hydra and reaper of the wilds were my All-Stars. Kalonian Hydra is a huge threat vs any deck and require to be answer quickly. It also works well with the whip, swinging 8 and gaining 8 life often just close the game. Reaper of the wilds with desecration demon is also very good, being able to filter your deck when a creature died is awesome, I wish golgari scry land were there yet, + having hexproof and deathouch is just a super up.
