I agree that the Supreme Court is very inelegant, but I was really attracted to the idea of a permanent body. Your suggestion of there being other roles for the branches really appeals to me, and I'm going to spend some time thinking of some. If so, the Supreme Court would be completely revamped.
However, I like the President's power of veto, because I think it provides a conflict between the Congress and the President that provides the voters with interesting choices.
edit: I also think it could be cool if there would be two threads: a campaign thread and a game thread. Both of which would be running simultaneously.
edit edit: When there are fewer than six players, or when there are six players plus the remaining Supreme Court, there could be a rule that allows the President to declare martial law, which would cause normal lynching.
What does MTGS think about this kingmaker variant? This is all a new idea, but I think it could work.
24 players. Five mafia.
All players are arranged into six districts of four players. There can be any number of mafia in those districts.
At the beginning of the game, elections in those districts will be held. Those elected must serve, and will form Congress. Congressional members will serve for two game days before they step down or are reelected. They will vote, with a majority, to decide who is lynched. If a congressman is killed overnight, a special election will be held in that district. They can lynch other congressmen.
Next, the players will elect a President, who again must serve and can only serve for four days (he cannot be reelected). The President has two powers: to choose the Supreme Court (later) and to veto lynch decisions from the Congress. If the decision is vetoed, Congress must either vote for someone else or get all six members to override the veto. If he is killed, there is a special election.
All that remains is the Supreme Court. These guys serve for the entire game, and are appointed by the President. They can override one lynch decision by majority vote, one veto, or can force one congressman to lose an election and have the person with the second highest vote number win. However, they must be approved by at least three members of Congress, and they are limited to one decision per game. If a member of the Supreme Court is killed, The President will have to put forward another Supreme Court nominee. No man can be both a congressman and President.
There is a deadline of three real life days for all elections, and a deadline of two real life days for all Supreme Court decisions after all have been elected.
My expectation is that Palin is going to be disgraced and scapegoated for this defeat. However, at least one British bookmaker disagrees with me, so who knows? (I'll note that these odds were laid before McCain officially lost, though.)
I bet you she'll eventually try for the Senate. She might try in the 2012 primaries, but if that fails then I don't think she'll stay in Alaska.

Apparently, the good folks who collect royalties from oil and gas at the Interior Department are horribly, horribly corrupt.
Some of my favorite quotes:
The report alleges that eight officials in the royalty program accepted gifts from energy companies whose value exceeded limits set by ethics rules — including golf, ski and paintball outings; meals and drinks; and tickets to a Toby Keith concert, a Houston Texans football game and a Colorado Rockies baseball game.
The investigation also concluded that several of the officials “frequently consumed alcohol at industry functions, had used cocaine and marijuana, and had sexual relationships with oil and gas company representatives.”
The report accuses Mr. Smith of improperly accepting gifts from the oil and gas industry, of engaging in sex with two subordinates, and of using cocaine that he purchased from his secretary or her boyfriend several times a year between 2002 and 2005. He sometimes asked for the drugs and received them in his office during work hours, the report alleges.
Keep this as a potential career choice for the future.

No. That was a verbal gladiatorial contest, not a reasonable probe into policy.
