I threw this list together last night, I was only able to test against mono white and the matchup was heavily in our favor(even with him side boarding, but not me because I didn't have a board at the time)
4 Sylvan Caryatid
4 Courser of Kruphix
3 Loxodon Smiter(want to make this Brimaz, just don't own any)
3 Stormbreath Dragon
4 Mizzium Mortars
3 Anger of the Gods
3 Chained to the Rocks
3 Selesnya Charm
2 Advent of the Wurm
2 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
2 Xenagos, the Reveler
1 Assemble the Legion
4 Stomping Ground
4 Temple Garden
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Abandon
3 Temple of Plenty
2 Temple of Triumph
3 Mountain
1 Forest
1 Plains
Not sure about the sideboard, but probably something like.
3 Mistcutter Hydra
2 Unravel the Aether
2 Assemble the Legion
2 Celestial Flare
2 Scavenging Ooze
4 xxx
And then 4 spots, idk about. Probably more ways to deal with planeswalkers or other big threats.
How do you guys think a more midrange/control approach would be in these colors? More like UWR tempo. We have access to some powerful creatures in boros reckoner, brimaz, stormbteath, archangel...etc. Those along with a strong burn package including warleader's helix, lightning strike which can be used as removal and as a kill. And other removal like mizzium mortars and chained to the rocks.
I'm just thinking out loud here, and it might have some potential. Going a little lighter on the counterspells then typically used in these colors, and bringing the beats.
I don't think ajani is right for this deck. He seems more suited for a wheenie strategy. I think the direction this deck needs to go is for a more "controlling" game plan. The mana for this deck isn't fast enough to allow a true aggro approach I think. So we should try a "Naya Control" maybe something like that list Brad Nelson had awhile ago.
Maybe a creature base like (3) stormbreath (3) brimaz (3) caryatid
We have access to a lot of good removal including:
-Mizzium Mortars
-Anger of the Gods
-Chained to the Rocks
-Warleaders Helix
-Lightning Strike
-Maybe fated retribution
-selesnya charm
Then other bombs(along with stormbreath)
-assemble the legion
-elspeth
-both gruul planeswalker
And good sideboard cards like mistcutter, skylasher.
Idk, these are just some ideas running through my head. Sorry if there are any typos, I'm at work on my cell phone. But I think a slower control strategy is the route we need to go.
Boros reckoner is good in my meta right now, but this might change. I also might cut elspeth, for something else. I kind of want to try spirit of the labyrinth in the board against control.
I really like boros reckoner. He's an efficient creature and his synergy with domri is amazing. I'm not sold on elspeth yet in the deck, but we shall see. Fleecemane and fanatic have been stellar performers thus far, and are big enough that our aggro matchup is good. I think my worst matchup will be spinxs revelation.
Just something I'm trying out for now! I used to play UWR control, and then mono black, but enjoy playing decks that are off the radar. And I really like the naya colors. I'll try this out at fnm on Friday. It's seemed to be pretty good In testing, might drop some of the low drops for more removal and make it more controlling, but I like the midrange strategy so far
Warleader's Helix is insane. I almost never wish it was anything else. You guys can go ahead and cut it, I will continue playing it. I have 4 copies of it in my 75.
Well, I decided to put this deck together, for my local shop's Super Fnm. I haven't really played since before innistrad rotated out(UWR was my favorite deck then), so I wasn't sure what deck I wanted to play with the new theros cards. Anyway, I felt comfortable with UWR, despite people telling me that the deck isn't very strong right now. But after tonight's FNM, I disagree strongly. Although I just missed out on Top 8(59 players...I finished 9..bad breakers) I felt this deck was extremely solid, and at least gave me an opportunity to win each match. Here was the deck I sleeved up:
I lost to the green devotion deck splashing red for the planes walkers.(I played this deck twice tonight, two separate players.) And the matchup seems about 50/50. I crushed the 1st player, and the 2nd player beat me in games 2/3. Game 2 was very close, and game 3, I got stuck on 4 lands. I'm thinking about cutting either renounce the guilds or mizzium mortars for 1-2 copies of cyclonic rift, that see like it would swing that r/g matchup into our favor.
I also beat mono black, and white weenie with relative ease.
I think this deck has serious potential, and I'm going to continue playing it. I felt like the deck at least gave me an opportunity to win every game I played.
27 lands might not be correct, and I do go down to 26, I would cut an island, and add in either the second assemble, the 4th azorius charm, the 4th omenspeaker or a second syncopate. But 27 was good for me all night, I never flooded, hit all my land drops(with the exception of that one game) I also never had to mulligan tonight, the deck has so much variety for things to do in the early turns.
Sorry if my post seems like a big rambling on, I'm tired and posting this from my cell phone, I'll fix any mess ups later.
I haven't played in almost 2 months(sometimes being In the military sucks) before I left though, I was playing UWR. I get back this weekend, and there is a fairly large tournament, and I'm probably going to play UWR, but I keep having thoughts of building human reanimator again. It is my favorite standard deck to play, but I'm not sure how good it is anymore, with scavenging ooze in standard now, even though there seems
To be far less GY hate coming in from the board. Maybe drop a few of the combo pieces and play 3-4 main deck abrupt decay?
What are people's opinions?
Also, it seems like our worst matchup is still hyper aggro decks.(that was always my worst matchup as well) what are people doing for this, rather then the transformational SB, which I was never a huge fan of. Maybe just board into pillar, rolling temblor, and maybe still thragtusk?
I haven't played in about a month and a half due to being in the military and getting ready for a deployment. Anyway, I get back this week, and there is a tournament this weekend, and I'd like to play my UWR deck. Ive been reading a
Little bit, about changes since m14, and it appears no big changes have been made to the deck, other then maybe a decrease in popularity. Is there a reason for this, or is it just because of burning earth?
I built this deck a few months ago, just so I had a legacy deck to play with friends, since they play legacy more so then other formats.
This weekend, there is a legacy tournament near me, and I am thinking about playing. I just have questions about the sideboard, like what do I board in/out during specific matchups.
...etc. I don't have the exact list, but it was 36 creatures and 24 lands in the main. Mana base seemed really shock heavy. But, I have been thinking about going 4 color also, but just splashing red for Falkenrath Aristocrat.(One of my favorite cards)
