Posting my EDH for people to critique. I just want to kill all your things, steal them, and then kill you with your own thing. Sisters, Chainer, Geth, Coffin Queen, Ink Eyes, etc fit the bill. I dont have stuff like Reaninate or Beacon because theyre just one shots. Primarily its a BG Goodstuff list with a bunch of removal. I havent built an EDH deck a while so I am mainly here to make sure the number of lands/ramp is appropriate.
Moving on. Past 2 weekends, multiple rock lists have made Day 2 at the SCG open. Sadly none made top 32 at both events. The meta is pretty hostile for BGX but modern is so cyclic, itll probably be favorable for us soon enough.
Kci and storm also cant combo through a damping sphere. It also costs 2 mana and doesn't require white.
Damping Sphere gets Natures Claimed (which KCI boards in 4 of). Gaddock Teeg and Kambal are tutorable in Traverse, which makes you consistent with having a hate card post board.
You do rely on the yard a little bit more. However, you also bring in threats post board that dont care about the yard. The deck has a bigger learning curve, but it has a higher ceiling with the aggressive nature I mentioned. I 100% believe we need that ceiling with how powerful modern has become.
Dont get me wrong. I LOVE Tireless Tracker. It might be my favorite card. (I currently have 1 in the SB of my 19 land deck, it might not be the best option but I love it too much). But having your deck have infinite durdly 3 drops with 25 lands just isnt the best plan unless you know your meta is full of grind. In a open field, Traverse is definitely the best BGX build
There might be a rapid uptick in rock, but itll die down. Trophy will not break the format. If anything, Trophy makes our good matchups a little bit worse but our bad matchups a little bit better. Trophy vs Storm or Burn is the worst feeling in the world. That being said, I still believe Traverse is the best version of this deck in modern.
After sticking with Traverse, I realized its nice having a proactive game plan. You could do a lot worse than an early 4/4 Grim flayer or 5/6 Tarmogoyf. In a linear format like Modern, it pays to be aggressive. Sure, in grindy mirrors, youd want to go bigger and longer with Tracker but thats not what Modern is about.
Kambal and Gaddock Teeg are houses because it demands answers. As a midrange deck, its a nice change of pace having our own piece of hate that requires interaction fron my opponent, not the other way around. KCI and storm cant combo through Teeg or Kambal. Theyve both been surprisingly very good and a really good reason to splash white.
In all honesty, I initially expected Trophy to slow down the meta, but it wont. The linear decks will prey on these durdley midrange decks, like how they usually do.
For the people sticking to BG Rock, I sense the tone that White is being heavily under estimated. Its not just Stony Silence. Lingering Souls might not be gameover vs Uw Control anymore, but its still really good in that plus these midrange mirrors. Not to mention Gaddock Teeg and Kambal are an absolute house in the format.
Ravine matters in all matchups and its not only about hitting 5 lands. Its about playing bob and still hold up terminate, its about playing a discard and still have kcommand up. Playing goyf and have decay up. I guess you get it, we want to hit our landdrops and also ideally untapped. I think you cant compare this to abzan bc abzan is often fine just casting souls and thats it. Jund is more reactive and thus tapped lands and missing lands hurts more. We want to do multiple stuff a turn. Unused mana is often occuring in jund due to it being more reactive. I cant tell how often i would have liked to play a threat in 23 land jund but couldn bc I needed to hold up kcommand against affinity. Missing landdrops hurts here quite a bit since threats could have come down earlier otherwise. In abzan you just jam souls on 3 and thats it.
No, really, in my experience, I was too frustrated in 23 land builds since I basically had all the answers, but was too slow to cast all them, because my hand was too clunky and not efficient enough. I was often stuck on 3 untapped lands on turn 4 or 5 even. Thats not how I want to play my deck.
Agreed I'm on the "24-lands or bust" train.
I'm a numbers guy, and over 4 4-round FNM like tournaments, the recorded number of mulligans were significantly higher when playing 23 lands. Also, reasons that I lost were very often "not able to keep up" with the other deck because of sitting on 3 or 4 lands. That was enough to turn me off of the 23 land package, even though it created the "ideal" list for me. Statistically this should not create that drastic of a change, but you know what they say, something on paper may not exactly what you experience.
I've found the opposite to be true. On 24 lands, I felt like I couldn't keep up because I didn't draw enough action spells. Playing a larger sample size of games online, 23 lands seems appropriate. But to each their own
I just recently hopped back on the Jund train (been a year and a half) from Abzan. I havent paid attention to the latest Jund tech, so I copied Jadin Klomparens list, swapped a mainboard card, and mashed a bunch of sideboard cards and played last night.
Round 1 vs Eldrazi and Taxes (2-0).
Game 1. I was behind on board vs a Wasteland Strangler and a TKS. A topdeck scooze gained me life and stabilized the board. Top deck goyf, ravine, and swung back hard. Game 2 I blood mooned my opponeny and won.
Round 2 vs Grixis Shadow (1-2)
All 3 games were grindfests. I had a winning line game 3 and punted by scooping prematurely (to sun, 1 red source with bolt+kcommand in hand)
Round 3 vs 4 Color Shadow (not green)
Lost g1 to 3 shadows. Won game 2 via grind. Game 3 I bloodmooned my opponent.
As for the deck, I swapped the 7th discard spell for a Huntmaster comparing to Klomparens list. 7 is too many IMO and I wanted a topend bomb. Ibjust picked Huntmaster since I had it lying around and it was great. Life gain, token, shocking, all relevent. 23 lands might seem like a shocker, but playing Abzan, we ran 23 lands with 2 Siege Rhinos and 2 Tireless Trackers. 23 lands is fine. I get it, Raging Ravine, but in matchups where Ravine matters, youll hit the 5th land. Especially with Bobs.
Ill probably jam this list online but just wanted general input. Of note Im conaidering a 2nd Blood Moon (maybe over the 3rd Fulmonator) and do a 2/2 split. Seems great vs tron, scapeshift, and 4 color greedy decks. Thoughts? Thanks and it honestly feels great to be back on Jund. KCommand is ubsurd..
Edit: I also noticed people debating Goblin Rabblemaster a couple pages back. Small sample size, but it was the real last night. For example, vs grixis shadow, my opponent was at 6 life and had a Tasigur and an Angler. My board was a goyf, a wolf token, and a rabblemaster. He couldnt attack because rabblemaster stonewalled him in the sense that a rabblemaster was a harsh crackback and I think he was right. There was another spot where he opted to bolt my rabblemaster instead of bob. Any creature that bites the bullet for bob, im all for.
Hey guys, dont mean to derail the thread but has anyone tried a red splash for death and taxes? I know in legacy, you can splash for a Plateau. How about in modern?
Magus of the Moon is kind of a nonbo with Path to Exile/ Ghost Quarter, but red also provides Lightning Bolt for bad matchups like affinity and elves. Thoughts?
Hey everyone, I took a break from EDH and now Im back! I wanted to build an Abzan deck featuring Astral Slide and Life From the Loam. I figured the cycling lands go great with Loam. Loam dredges, milling creatures. Bring back those creatures with Karador! Im sure Im not the first person to think of this so Id love some input! Heres the list.
1) Are 6 basics enough? Recurring STEve, Solemns, Farhaven Elfs, etc I feel like Im going to run out of basics fast.
2) Thinking about cutting Survival of the Fittest. Personally think its too powerful so Im open to some suggestions. Maybe it should just be a 37th land (a basic?)
3) If I cut survival, maybe Genesis should be cut as well. Thoughts?
4) I only played one game with it, but the deck seems to lack wincons. Outside of Avenger, Angel of Despair, Sun Titan, and Noxious Gearhulk, Im lacking fattys that pack a punch.
5) Any other thoughts I would greatly appreciate!
Damnation doesnt do much in the matchup. If they land Primetime, youre probably losing anyway. Its almost impossible to recover by wiping your own board in order to deal with Titan and crackback the race when theyll have every card be a bolt in hand at that point.
Guys, a theorical question regarding sideboard. When do you side out Vials?
I side out vials against Dredge, Burn, Affinity, Storm, Ad Nauseam, Tron (not the eldrazi one
I disagree siding out Vial against Storm and Ad Naus. Pressure is excellent in those matchups, and Vial helps provide that additional pressure in the midgame to close out faster. You need to give them the fewest number of turns possible; otherwise, they will find a way to power through disruption.
Vial is also really important against those strategies to deny them of resources with Flickerwisp. Having the ability to blink a Baral or Goblin Electromancer for the storm player's entire turn usually can prevent them from going off that turn, and sometimes denying a land or blinking a Phyrexian Unlife against Ad Naus can buy you the extra turn you need to win.
Im new to the deck, but shouldnt you board out Vials vs removal heavy decks like Grixis Shadow and BGx?
Round 1 0-2 vs Eggs/KCl combo with tron.
Never seen this iteration before. Game 1 I had vial, Inspector, Flickerwisp, path 3 lands. Lost on turn 4. This game I GQd a Tower and she had another tower in hand of course. Always kill the non tower land...
Game 2 I mulliganned aggressively to try to hit Stony Silence/yard hate/land hate. 6 card hand was Inspector, Arbiter, flickerwisp, 3 lands (1 was GQ). I cant mulligan that right? I hit her tron land without her fetching and she went off turn 4. It was gross.
Round 2 opponent no showed. Maybe he didnt do his taxes.
Round 3 2-0 vs Grixis Control. Game 1 I just went off with Vial, Thalia, Flickerwisp, Resto, golems, etc. Game 2 I destroyed all of my opponents red and black sources with 3 GQs and 2 Tec edges. He only had 2 islands while I had lethal It was beautiful.
Not sure if Ill play the deck again (normally on Abzan) but if I have a change of heart, Ill update how I do again. Thanks for everyones help.
I wonder what the correct amount of Horizon Canopy/ Shefet Dunes are. I feel like you want 4x Canopys to keep up the gas. You can always add Dunes but 5 or more lands that ping you just seem dangerous. Maybe 4 Canopys, 1 Dune? 3 Canopies/2 Dunes?
