This is what I have been playtesting. It seems fairly adaptable and solid, but I also think it could be further refined. I haven't tested the control matchup, as I don't know anyone running control this set yet, so I may be tinkering it there as needed.
I apologize if there's topic already, I didn't see one in the first five pages and searching didn't turn up anything, so...
Looking for a new deck to run between now and rotation I was intrigued by the idea of mono-white. After a couple days of tinkering I ended up with a list like this:
The deck is intended to play a little like a midrange deck, using devotion to put out Soul or Angel as quickly as possible. This is a new archetype for me, so any advice and criticism is welcome.
So, I decided to create an EDH deck based around Dralnu, Lich Lord, who was the very first legendary creature I ever acquired.
Anyways, as a hobby I like to write short stories, some of which are MTG-themed, and the main antagonist of several of these stories is a Planeswalker named Jericho Rehling (hence the username), and I decided to be fun and make the deck tell his story. So, here's what I came up with.
The deck has the potential to do lots of things. I can win through zombie tribal, combo out three or four different ways, or end it with Rise Of The Dark Realms effects. It isn't designed to be extremely competitive, as my playgroup is rather casual, and I purposely limited tutoring and made the combos difficult to assemble because of that.
So, here's something I've been playing with.
I've had successes with a Rakdos Midrange/Control list, but discovered I was highly vulnerable to UW and Esper. After some thought, I decided to try a RBW list, as RBW is my favorite color combination and I genuinely think it viable.
Black is the primary color of the deck, as I like to employ devotion to my advantage, but white and red are both highly useful in the list. I am worried about mana problems, but hopefully I can adjust and tinker to work the kinks out.
The general idea is to keep the board locked down with kill spells until I can play a Desecration Demon and stall until I hit a win-con, which I consider to be Gray Merchant, Obzedat, Whip, or Blood Baron; all of which help me stabilize and take the lead. I like the hand destruction that red provides, which is why I opted over a straight Orzhov build.
So, after a lot of time working on a list for Rakdos Control, I arrived at this, and, happy with it, piloted it at FNM last evening.
I went 4-1, taking 3rd place, and was very satisfied with my deck's performance, so I decided to post here what I ran and see what you guys thing, and what you think I could improve on.
I was very happy with the deck's performance, it seemed capable of handling a wide array of strategies. While Control was clearly the most difficult match-up, a combination of Slaughter Games and Rakdos's Return seemed to do the trick, though I ultimately lost to a Grixis Control deck 2-1, which stole my Desecration Demons with Ashiok to win Game 1, lost to Rakdos Keyrune Game 2, and defeated me with Slaughter Games and Desecration Demon Game 3.
I'll go ahead and post a long explanation of my creature choices here, and if you want I can explain my other spells as well.
Creatures
Lifebane Zombie: The MVP of the night, Lifebane Zombie proved extraordinarily powerful with Whip Of Erebos. Even though he doesn't exile creatures against a lot of decks, he still lets me see the opponent's hand and plan around it, and the 3 intimidate damage hits reliably, and, with Whip, heals me very reliably.
Desecration Demon I run enough kill spells to make sure this guy can reliably swing every turn, and it really, really hurts. Even if they kill him once, bringing him back, with haste, with Whip is very, very nasty, and absolutely game-changing.
Gray Merchant Of Asphodel With Lifebane Zombie and Desecration Demon and Underworld Connections main-board, this guy swings the board hugely when he drops. It was not uncommon for me to drain 6, and I even had a game where he drained for 10, and I could easily sac and bring him back out the next turn for another huge impact. Definitely one of my favorite cards in the deck.
Erebos, God Of The Dead Turning this guy into a creature was never a problem, and he goes very well with Devour Flesh, and Whip ensures I can afford to draw cards for days.
Abhorrent Overlord: The big finisher, Overlord coming out with 6 harpies really seals the deal for the opponent. I won every game he resolved the next turn, either through damage or my opponent simply conceding. The body is fantastic, and bringing out an army of evading attackers is also great. And when I can drain off every one of them, it only gets better.
Thank you for reading, and good luck to you all in the future. Any advice, discussion, or anything at all are very welcome!
Sounds good! My girlfriend will be piloting this tomorrow night (I'll be running Rakdos Control), so I'll be sure to get good details on its performance so I can contribute.
I agree - the best thing about this deck is how absurdly fun it is. Even my girlfriend loves playing with it, win or lose. I don't think it as highly competitive as my Rakdos Control list, but this is the deck I run that makes me smile the most while I use it, and I'm very excited to try and FNM with it.
Nice Deck, thank you for sharing this!
Question: Did you ever get the Gods devotion to work? I assume he is mainly in there just for his ability.
Yes - he is primarily there for his ability. I don't think I've ever needed to use him as a creature, anyways. I've actually had better success with Stormbreath Dragon main board, but I'm still testing.
I do like Bident, but I very rarely attack with my creatures - I tend to deal most of my damage through Purphoros/Guttersnipe, rather than swinging with the elementals.
I am considering Curse Of The Swine as a sideboard option, but so far I generally only have one token out at a time from Pyromancer due to lots of chump-blocking, so...
And, hmm. Frostburn may be better indeed. I'll test and get back to you.
Young Pyromancer I've found him incredibly useful. Not only do his tokens stall aggro decks and non-trampling fatties, he synergies exceptionally well with Purphoros, God Of The Forge. Very strong in multiple, and a good late draw even in the mid or late game. Automatic 4-of. Guttersnipe The primary win condition of the deck, which runs 24 instants and sorceries. I win most of my games through guttersnipe damage, and with Izzet Charm and Steam Augury for digging it is pretty easy to get him out in multiples, which only accelerates the inevitable. I can see three working fine, but I really like the chance of multiples of him out simultaneously, and he's therefore an automatic 4-of for me. Spellheart ChimeraAn alternative win condition. My graveyard is always full of instants and sorceries, so he can come out as quite the beater. Trample and flying make him great. I only run two, because he is strongest in the mid and late game, and he doesn't necessarily look good in my opening hand. Steam Augury and Izzet Charm both work well with him - even if they end up putting instants // sorceries in my graveyard to get him, it only helps him get larger. Purphoros, God Of The Forge This guy is just so good. I cast an instant and get a token from Young Pyromancer? Take two. I top deck my spell heart chimera? Comes out with a Shock attached. His damage adds up very quickly, and the pump ability is a great mana sink for my elementals and chimeras. Omenspeaker In the board for the aggro matchup, when guttersnipe and Purphoros damage are less important and burn spells are crucial, Omenspeaker helps me dig for the right cards and blocks everything from Cackler to Ash Zealot. Izzet Staticaster Flashing in a 3-toughness blocker against aggro is useful. Also useful is the ability to unexpectedly Gut Shot a whole wave of elemental tokens, or wipe out their fire drinker satyrs. It can even help stack damage through burn onto higher toughness creatures. Stormbreath Dragon If my guttersnipes and pyromancers aren't sticking, its nice to have a strong creature to push through some extra damage. Plus, against Sphinx's Revelation-running control, that monstrous damage can really help negate some of their life gain.
Spells // Sorceries
Izzet Charm: This card is like a swiss army knife. I can burn down a creature early game, counter a kill spell targeting one of my 'snipes if they're tapped out, and loot for two to dig for answers. This spell does work. Lightning Strike: Functionally a Searing Spear, this spell is crucial to the deck. Hitting either the opponent or a creature for 3 is so much better in practice than it looks on paper. Magma Jet: Not as high-damage as Lightning Strike, Magma Jet has the advantage of scrying to help prevent dead draws and look for answers. Mizzium Mortars: Though it usually works as a high-costed Flame Slash on things like Lox Smiter, Mortars has important versatility, and clearing a wave of creatures is a pretty powerful effect, and one I'm always glad to have. Turn // Burn: This is a powerful card. Five mana to kill a desecration demon, or a god, or, well, anything, is very critical in getting rid of things that are problematic for this deck. It's not uncommon for either of its halves to be useful on their own, either, though I always feel bad when I just cast Burn for the Shock damage. Steam Augury: This card is pretty skill-intensive, but being able to dig for answers is good, and giving your opponent choices is good. More choices leaves them more room to make mistakes. Swan Song: Pretty good for countering gods, or a removal that would kill one of my win conditions, I like to play Guttersnipes as a 4-drop. Spellheart Chimera eats the tokens it produces for lunch, and you can always just burn it if its threatening you. Essence Scatter: Countering a creature that I wouldn't be able to burn easily is essential. Anger Of The Gods: Now, this spell kills your creatures too. But I rarely play a guttersnipe or something before turn 4 anyways, and if I don't have a Pyromancer out, killing a wave of creatures is very, very important. This helps stall out very fast aggro decks. Cyclonic Rift Very good for removing Planeswalkers, or clearing the board late-game for a big swing with elementals and such. It can also help by removing a creature you can't burn and giving you the opportunity to counter it. Dissolve A Cancel that lets you scry away dead draws. Very, very powerful, and very, very good. A must-sideboard against control decks. Counterflux: Situationally useful, it can help ensure the cancel goes through, if nothing else. Generally useful against Azorius control.
Thanks for reading! If you have any commentary or suggestions, let me know!
Here's my current list. I'm trying to fine-tune and balance it. Overall I try to control the board with kill spells and threats of kill spells, while hopefully gaining life with Whip of Erebos and Gray Merchant Of Asphodel.
My friend and I have poured over this deck list the past few moments, and we both agree it is very, very strong.
He was looking for a guideline to a bant aura deck, and he is really looking at this one closely. We're trying to figure out anything that could be improved - we will keep you posted if you'd like.

Guttersnipe The primary win condition of the deck, which runs 24 instants and sorceries.

He was looking for a guideline to a bant aura deck, and he is really looking at this one closely. We're trying to figure out anything that could be improved - we will keep you posted if you'd like.
