It's been a hot minute since we've gotten another Entomb. At three mana and sorcery *just* for that effect will probably not be good still but hey, we got another Entomb.
Someone thought this was probably too good with Artifact Lands in older formats and nerfed it into the ground. Now it fits the "Uncommon upshifted to rare because we don't have enough rares in this set" slot... which is like the third one of those we've gotten in this set.
Tempted to say The Ancient One may be Legacy viable but it probably isn't aside from being extremely out of the range of Dismember. I know that format could meet the Descent "downside" relatively easy if a fat body still matters.

It's just Cascade except it can Cascade for a mana value that isn't the same as the mana value of the spell it's cast from. Oh and you can optionally put the card into your hand if you want to benefit from some "if you cast it from your hand" ETB effects. I would imagine it will mostly get used in the exact same way as Cascade though - combo decks that try to Discover exactly one card in the deck, probably without any mana cost.
Avon is known for two things to me: Photomanipulating real posed photos to look well in the settings and appropriately good looking 90s computer game looking CG art. These... miss heavily on both those fronts. Both look way too new though I think I like the Serra Angel the best out of the four. Miss in terms of card choice and miss in terms of art for me personally, unfortunately.
I thought Zhalfir was inspired by Africa? Kinda lame that it's just some generic horse riding knight
There are horses in Africa. If real world accuracy is important, this makes way more sense than the rhino knights, though I'll admit those are pretty badass.
The Zebra Unicorn idea they use for the soldier in Modern Horizons was a pretty neat idea I wish they continued here. Not a huge deal though.
Getting way too many exile sweepers in Standard. Time for some creatures with "this creature cannot be exiled" stapled on them. I've lost count of how many sweepers are in Standard right now, its too many.
I'm surprised they haven't played with a "if this would be exiled put it into the graveyard instead" style effect.
Would be nice wouldn't it?
For every threat or sweeper there should be an answer (or answers) to it that isn't a counterspell.
Their design philosophy for the past almost fifteen years has been that large game changing effects should matter and shouldn't have easy answers unless they're creatures (which is why so many great effects are on creatures). It's why they've reduced hexproof and regeneration among others. I doubt we're gonna see them change this philosophy because then it's an arms race of the sideboard or niche cards in the main board to counter effects of other effects.
This will just be me but this is so far the *only* battle actually worth playing because you get your cards back off the mana you spend to play it. The rest of them just feel like card/turn disadvantage waiting to happen since you have to spend cards/battle time to attack your own resources.
My only question is what is the opponent getting from defending it. Because preventing a 4/4 creature from hitting the board is a real mediocre prize when they already got two lands from the mana dropped on it. It really feels like there's no point in blocking for it unless there's some other rule to benefit the defender.
If you have a Reckless Fireweaver on board beforehand, a Scorched Ruins and Oboro in the grave, and your opponent can't stop it, you have infinite opponent damage.
This is one of the more boring applications for Ashnod, but using Bloodfire Colossus as a one mana, 12 damage nuke from the sky is far from a bad application.
Only one question I got on this: Since it says "you may", if you choose not to return a creature on the first sacrifice a turn, but later sacrifice a creature with higher mana value, can you do it on the second one? If so, that's actually pretty useful. If you can't, I don't like this card at all.
