Some people are saying that the art is way too small. It just looks small because the frame has been pushed right into where the black border would have been, but I'm pretty sure the art box is the normal size.
Personally I love these. Much prefer that wotc push the boat out for things like these rather than play it safe. My ancient mew is one of favourites. Though only a couple of the cards revealed so far are ones that I would want to pick up. Fingers crossed I like the others enough to buy some of this set.
The Tamiyo's Journal + Briarbridge Patrol interaction doesn't work the way people want it to work, right? Briarbridge Patrol's trigger would resolve first, then you can search for a creature. Though not a judge so I could well be wrong.
Edit: I reread the card and saw that it triggers at the end step.
Surprised no one else has mentioned the fact that Liliana's outfit in the new art is much more akin to Liliana of the Veil than to any ofherotherarts, where she always has her midriff showing.
I will be surprised if many of the surge costs are less than the original cost. As others have stated, I think surge costs will be on 4+ CMC cards primarily and the surge cost will be comparable or potentially even more than the original cost.
From what I gathered from the WMC and Matt Tabak previews was that the surge cost will always be less than the cards' CMC (probably only ever by 1 or 2 mana) and only sometimes grant extra effects (probably on rares/mythics and maybe a cycle of underpowered, limited oriented, uncommons).
I'm pretty set in the camp that <> is the new colourless symbol, and that <> in a cost just means it has to be paid specifically with colourless rather than a new colour.
But a problem I see is the rule R&D has that lands can't be strictly better than basic lands. So with the new Wastes being a basic, are things like Yavimaya Coast and Shrine of the Forsaken Gods strictly better than Wastes and so better than a basic? Seems weird to have these all in Standard at the same time if this is the case.
Or does it not apply for this set since it's a gimmick of the block? Is the new Wastes just pandering to Commander players?
Of note is the fact Mirrorpool produces <> and does other things and comes into play tapped. Although the other things it does are quite good which could justify coming in tapped.
Am I missing something, or does Marshall say that "No morph, when turned face up, will outright trump another face-down morph in combat for anything under five mana" right after revealing the morph goat with first strike that does in fact trump all the other morphs revealed bar the blue one?
That morph goat is not in this set (it was printed in Onslaught). It was shown as an example of what they're *not* going to do.
