I don't think we have any reason to believe the guy in the art is Matias - I don't think anyone knew what Matias looked like at the time those cards came out. It's a Twitter joke.
On the other hand, the original ability here was pretty prescient - just got printed as Morophon, the Boundless.
Thanks, I guess it worked out well enough for being completely made-up on the spot. I'm sure there's something cool I could have done, had some thoughts about tracking down people's first CCL posts or repeating challenges from a selection of past CCLs but it was too ambitious for the time I had. Fun to jump in one more time for the old CCL though.

We skipped from the first CCL in 2007, ahead four years at a time revisiting past mechanics. Subject16 and void_nothing made it to the present, and have prepared a set of cards following some design notes from this year while tying it in to some meta flavor.

The words Subject, Void, and Salvation must be included
A card using proliferate
Continue a cycle formed from one or more past cards
A wedge-colored Legend that is a follower of your Legend from Round 1
Completing the Eminence commanders and providing a wedge Emrakul follower: Tovolar, Arcane Alpha2GUR
Legendary Creature - Werewolf Shaman (Mythic) Eminence - Whenever another Werewolf you control transforms, if Tovolar, Arcane Alpha is in the command zone or on the battlefield, you may pay 2. If you do, create a token that's a copy of that permanent and a 2/2 green Wolf creature token. They gain haste.
Trample, hexproof GUR: Search your library for a Wolf or Werewolf creature card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then shuffle your library.

Fun card but I don't know how this is in a core set instead of like Modern Horizons - multiple people here have already confused how it works.
This one is Hemlock for me - Hall of Gemstone is a way more fun choice of Magus than Chains, which who knows what it really does.
The land is the most interesting card of Eventide's for me, but soft countering every turn seems kind of unfun. Hemlock's land ability is clean and cool.
Eventide's atog fits a Dominaria theme but it seems really hard to do much fun with. Eating historic stuff would have opened some possibilities. The Forceatog is an interesting source of burst damage, feels like it could almost be red.
Neither of the lords really did anything new.

Yeah either of those are fine - the general idea was just to replace/fix megamorph but "face-down card as 2/2" is the core idea. Both of the challenges use both sides of the card.
