Since I haven't seen anything posted about this yet I figured I would share my new deck idea. I've been trying to build a deck around Whispering Madness since it was released and now we have Notion Thief which combos excellently together. Now I've only had this built for a lil more than a week now I've only had one tournament with it so far. I got some decent results over Esper Control, Jund, Junk Aristocrats, Act II, and Flash. Now onto the deck:
3 Pithing Needle
3 Duress
4 Dispel
2 Mutilate
2 Far / Away
1 Sever the Bloodline
Now the point of this deck is to have Notion Thief out then play Whispering Madness. This combo makes both players discard their hands and you draw both your cards and the cards your opponent would draw. Against most decks this is very backbreaking. Depending on how many cards were drawn you should be able to have the answer to anything they should play. There is a good mix of counters and kill in this deck. After you have the combo going and you are drawing most of your deck Aetherling will be finishing off your opponent. A quick fyi for you all, if you play against Esper Control with this deck you will win hands down. Now also, some of you will ask about Cavern of Souls, now please look and see that I run Ghost Quarter to stole that problem.
Combo
This doesn't exist in standard right now, but Chandra wouldn't help the cause even if it did.
Combo is still in standard right now. The older ones aren't seeing much play but there is a new one that I'm surprised isn't being played but I've gotten some excellent results from it so far in the week I've had it built.
For question 1 I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure that you will not need to sacrifice the creature they put in play from the rules the gatherer brings up. I'm not a judge so please don't take my word for this until a judge comes in and gives us the correct answer. I'm just giving my input because I would like to believe I will still be right (hopefully) when a judge answers your question.
There is still almost 13 cards left to be spoiled for blue not counting the speculation cards. There is still hope we will get some more decent stuff. Time will tell if we do or not, but as the core set stands right now I'm happy with what blue is getting.
Nope. Still not a relevant argument. Like, the ONLY guy who doesn't really die to removal (post m14 rules changes) is Thrun. When we have on curve haste enablers, or, if you'd like to get techy, play him off curve with Savage Summoning to A. Make sure he's not countered and B. Make it more likely that your opponent is tapped out, saying "dies to removal" is being asinine.
Naw Thrun in current standard wouldn't do anything. Oh I see you left 2 mana open to regenerate, well end of turn Away or Devour Flesh or Tribute to Hunger . So your one creature that doesn't die to removal still dies to plenty of removal. Just remember those are just standard ways of getting rid of him.
The real enemy is these thragtusk style midrange decks. Derp around for 3 turns, cast farseek and follow it up with a creature that not only recovers your life but also provides card advantage, blockers and threats all in one. Can't be countered due to the presence of cavern of souls. Then that's not even the only creature that does that. Huntmaster essentially provides all of the same qualities as thragtusk but in a slightly different package. It's not even a game at that point. Just a contest to see who draws more heat. It's not interesting at all.
I somewhat agree with this but not entirely. I'm just now playing control again (been along time since the days of Zur's Weirding & Firemane Angel) but I love playing against the slower midrange decks like those. I see you mentioned Cavern of Souls. Since I've been playing again I've had a total of 48 Caverns played on my opponent's side of the field and they have never gotten the chance to use it ever (Human, Ooze, Angel, Wizard, Beast have been the only types named so far)
Why do you people forget about Ghost Quarter? I run 3 main deck because it is necessary for control. I only play U/B control but I can 100% for a fact say I have the best control deck period. Some of you are gonna get upset by what I said but its true. Any style of control deck that plays against me will lose 2-0 in my favor. I've beaten the best versions of Esper, Flash, W/U, U/B and so forth.
Ok so back to the point, all I wanted to say is that Cavern of Souls should not have an impact what so ever if you are playing control.
As a U/B control player now, I assure you this will have no affect on anything. This might see fringe play but there is no room for this guy in standard at the moment. Maybe once Theros comes out and there isn't much to choose from but all in all I'm not worried about him.
Pithing Needle can be used to stop the ability of [CARD]
Cartel Aristocrat[/CARD] correct?
-I'm assuming you can of course because of the colon making it an activated ability, but just wanted to make sure because of the sacrifice.
What happens when I Turn my opponent's Voice of Resurgence during my mainphase. I'm just wanting to know if my opponent gets a token if the Voice dies.
Went 5-1 with Golgari with Gruul ally playing Jund of course.
Got some decent pulls for commons and uncommons, the only rare I was able to run was Abrupt Decay from my guild pack. Very aggro oriented from my deck. Was undefeated all up to the last round before top 8 to a Naya deck with some burn. Pulled two Putrefys and had some good kill cards. Pulled Armed / Dangerous with some good bloodrush creatures, pulled both +5/+X creatures with bloodrush cmc 3 and a Ghor Clan Rampager.
The tramplers were the big deciding creatures in all of my games.
Most important cards that decided most of my games were Putrefy & Armed / Dangerous. Every game where I saw Armed / Dangerous I won for sure. Most of my matchups were against aggro decks and if they tapped out to attack Armed was backbreaking for them.

Vengevine only checks creature spells and the tribal instants like you mentioned are just instants and not creatures.
