Okay I was really feeling like people were jumping the gun but this is basically just another Commander set. Nobody is going to cast Genesis in Modern competitively and its looking like most of the rare slots are for that or limited. Boring.
I personally feel a lot of these "specialty" sets are like this. Don't get me wrong, I like Commander and I'm still getting a box of this set, but when I see some new card and think "Oh, that's a cool Commander card" instead of "Wow, that's going to be a solid Modern card" in a set devoted to Modern, it's a little disappointing.
I am hoping for Ancestral Vision. Do you think there is a chance?
I don't think so, since there doesn't seem to be a Suspend subtheme.
There's no flashback subtheme, but we have Past in Flames.
Ancestral is a card I'm really hoping will be in. The value is good and if it isn't in the price will creep above $60. Maybe even past 70.
There is a flashback subtheme:
Snapcaster Mage, Past in Flames, Lingering Souls, Gifts Ungiven to get the flashback cards in the graveyard. I expect Mystical Teachings to be in the set, too.
Infect and Dredge.... I have NEVER beaten either of these decks at my shop even with a great board and good decision making. I win 1 of the first 2 games and they always have the nut in game 3. So glad Troll is banned.
Another topic:
So with the ban of Gitaxian Probe in Modern, a reprint in MM2017 is highly unlikely right? I mean they wouldn't ban it, if it was in MM2017 - that would be totally nonsense.
It just might be in MM3. It wouldn't be the first time that this has happened. Stoneforge Mystic showed up in a Standard Event Deck after it was banned, and was only legal if you didn't change anything about the event deck. I also believe there was a card in MM1 that was banned in Modern, but it is escaping me at this time, if it happened.
There is a small possibility it is in MM3. It was one of those cards that needed a reprint in MM2, so they may have decided to put it in for MM3. Guess we'll find out in less than two months.
The Stoneforge event deck released in June 2011. The Standard bans happened in July. There was also nothing in MM1 that was banned in Modern (I'm like 99% sure)
Edit: 100% Sure no banned Modern cards were printed in MM1. Just checked the printing list
I have too agree, black removal just scales so much better than burn. Some may argue it can go to the dome late game but, ive actually yet too see a list with enough burn in it too do 20. It was possible because of Snapcaster before rotation but, well, you know. Which makes Magma Jet a discard a card Scry 2 spell and Warleaders helix a life gain spell.
Sorry thats a bit flippant, they are great cards, but you get my point?
I too saw Cypt Incursion see SB play, its a poor mans T1 Deathrite but, its a pretty sweet post-wrath play.
If your forgoing black completely tho you are quite limited when it comes too 'foolproof' winn cons. I kind of like the idea of winning with extort from blind obedience but, that seems slightly un-foolproof. Theres Heliod, but once again Pithing needle weak. Wow.
Right. And I'm totally agreeing with everything here. I built the U/W/R deck because I knew it had more life gain to it, but I think I'd rather have the black removal and a slightly better mana base.
And about Crypt Incursion, I actually played it as a one of main to help my mono red match up. It was so crazy, people were like: "You seriously play that main?" It held me in the game longer to either mill someone out with a Drownyard or swing in for lethal with Aetherling.
Deathrite is great if you have the green, but I'm vouching for an Esper control or U/B control list. I'll probably build up a U/B list once I get some Thoughtseize. I'll probably test with two Thassa and maybe Prognostic Sphinx. I kinda like the card.
One thing is for sure though. If anyone plays white in their control lists, they should be playing Heliod. In my testing, he's been a game winner every time.
I built up a U/W/R list that slightly resembled the lists prior to rotation and used Lightning Strike and some Magma Jets. However, after reading through this thread, I have to agree that red just isn't as good as black. Sure, you can burn the opponent out to close the game, but it seems better to strip their hand clean.
I do like the idea of a straight U/B control list as it does much of the same things as Esper, just with less life gain. On a tangent, I used to play U/B for the last month of Innistrad standard, and a card I LOVED to have because of all the removal in my deck was Crypt Incursion. Keep that in mind if anyone wants to build U/B. It's a great card. Also, Thassa is pretty good for just the scry alone. Especially in a two color deck.
Got my box for $158. Opened roughly $250. Seems good in my book. There were at least 3 people at my LGS (myself included) that opened a foil Squee. It was pretty funny.
I can't complain about the set. It's got a lot of stuff that's 'blegh', yes, BUT it has a good amount of cards I want and/or need. I'm getting a box at $178 and I'm pretty sure I can open it's value.
I'm all for wild speculating, but I have a financial limit. We'll see if it maintains its price. I don't really intend to play anything requiring a Gaea's Cradle, and that's a card that seems like I would have a tough time unloading in a trade due to a prohibitively high price.
That said, holy **** SCG. I feel like they overshot its true final price in order to get some panic buys from people.
Haha. Yeah, I hear ya. I needed one for my EDH deck, but no way I'm buying one at 115 on tcgplayer. I feel like it could stay high now, considering elves is a decent deck. And not TOO expensive. Besides the cradles...

I stand corrected. Forgot a couple. Haha.

Don't forget about Searing Spear and Pillar of Flame too. Play all the promos!!!
