The Vishanti have granted me wisdom and purpose to create 10 simple commandments that will encompass the rules of engagement for the forthcoming King of Trios tournament that will be featured in this very Versus Forum. These commandments, although passed down from the Vishanti, are also heavily influenced by the official Tournament of Champions Codex authored by Sir Poring. As a matter of fact, you will find that these rules are quite similar to one another, with the Commandments merely being an attempt at simplifying to Codex into less of legal document and more of an easy to reference series of expectations.
Without any further ado, here are the Ten Commandments of Versus Combat!
1) The Commandment of Nomination
To participate in this tournament, all that is required of you is to submit a Team Nomination consisting of any THREE fictional or non-fictional characters of your choice. These teams will be referred to as “Trios” and do NOT have to necessarily be from different fictional or non-fictional universes. They also do not have to be thematically tied to one another at all. Any motivation you can find to rip a Trios from your imagination will be considered for nomination into the King of Trios.
All in all, 16 teams will be chosen for the King of Trios. But there is no limit to the amount of nominations that can be submitted.
2) The Commandment of Limitations
Trios will only make it through the nomination phase into official representatives in the King of Trios are undergoing a “Power Level Review” from yours truly. If there are representatives of the Trios that fall under any one of these series of keywords, than they will be disqualified from contention and the original nominator will be asked to submit a new member for that Trios. If a Trios should be deemed to fall under any of these keywords or phrases through their combined powers, then they too, will be disqualified and a new team will have to be nominated.
Keywords & Phrases that will be used as grounds for disqualification are as follows:
Immortal, Invulnerable To Damage, Deity, Indestructible, Can Only Be Defeated By (Insert Name or Plot Object Here), Can Destroy An Entire (Planet, Galaxy, Universe), Mind/Body Control, Intangible.
List is subject to change at any time, and the Power Level Review does not necessarily need to strictly abide by the aforementioned list to determine grounds for elimination.
3) The Commandment of Sources
Nominations MUST include either a write up or online source for reference of powers from each member of each Trios, with the specific source, timeline or character portraying that personality made explicitly clear. Comic Book characters are allowed to use their comic book iterations, but it must be made abundantly clear which version of that character you are using.
For Example: In order to nominate The Flash, one would have to explicitly state which Flash, from which source (Cartoon, Comic, Movie, Video Game, Etc.) would be up for nomination, with a link to a source that describes that character. Keep in mind that under Commandment #2, a Power Level check will be initiated. If the version of the Flash nominated is deemed too powerful for contention, you will be asked to nominate someone else.
4) The Commandment of Locations
It is the belief of the Vishanti that Terrain should never be a deciding factor in a Versus Battle between two teams to determine who the superior combatants are. A victory through technicality due to terrain advantage is a hollow victory indeed, and cheapens the efforts of those who nominated the participants.
Therefore, the terrain for each battle will simply be a magically enclosed arena the size of a football field. No materials from the Arena or earth beneath can be used to manipulate the proceedings. Trios may only use what resources they carry on their persons to affect the battle.
5) The Commandment of Preparedness
Participants will have no prep time before battle begins. Their minds will be uploaded with all the information of their partners and their opponents, but otherwise they will not have any time to prepare before battle begins. Any weapons or abilities they normally have access to will be usable on their persons, but otherwise no devices or powers are allowed unless they have routine access to them in the majority of the media in which they are featured.
6) The Commandment of Loyalty
No minions, creations, summons, allies or outside support is allowed to be brought to the battlefield. Terrain cannot be morphed or modified to create situations that the Arena does not normally provide in straight up combat. Outside sources, even deities, are not allowed to interfere. This is a strict battle between two teams of Trios, and only those sources are allowed to participate.
Also, under no circumstances are members of each team to ever walk away from battle, betray their team mates or otherwise do any action that would force their team to lose on purpose through their betrayal or lack of participation. If you have nominated them to be a part of a team, they will act as a team.
7) The Commandment of Victory
Victory can only be attained by the incapacitation or KO of all members of the opposing team. Death is considered a permanent KO that cannot be reversed for the duration of the round. Participants are removed from the battlefield upon elimination. KO’s & Incapacitation are counted after the subject is detained or unconscious for at least a full minute. Real life combat goes by very quickly, and if someone is grounded or rendered unable to compete for a full 60 seconds, it is clear that they do not have the ability to escape or recover within a reasonable timeframe.
8) The Commandment of Democracy
To decide victory, individuals must be willing to post their argument in thread, with their decision in bold. You do not need a detailed explanation, nor do you need to refute the arguments of a previous voter in order for your vote to be valid. You simply need to state your vote and reasons why you believe they win. There will be no Poll’s featured in the King of Trios, as the Vishanti believe that in order to truly and fairly decide victors, matches must not be subject to a popularity contest decided by those who would not be willing to defend their choices.
9) The Commandment of Respect
Although debates may rage and your passion be great, that is still no excuse to treat your fellow participants with disrespect. Not only are you subject to the normal forum rules when participating in the King of Trios, but also, if your commentary becomes unruly or disruptive, your vote will not count in the final tally. So be mindful of your tongue and be respectful of the opinions of others.
10) The Commandment of Flexibility
These rules are subject to change and constructive criticism at any time. For although the Vishanti are wise, they are not unfair. If someone deems that one of the above commandments does not adequately cover specifics or otherwise hinders the enjoyment of the King of Trios, you are more than welcome to dispute any provision provided herein and a compromise will be made whenever possible.
Example Nomination (This is not an official nomination):
Team Strange Science: Members: Dr. Strange, Dr. Who & The Doctor
A well-placed set of rules! Truly wise are the Vishanti for guiding the Sorceror Supreme in creating commandments that reduce the complications of the voting system, the terrain, and the prep time.
I really hope to be able to enjoy this tournament before I leave; this is a great idea, Doctor Strange!
Just a few comments on the limitations:
Immortal - I'm assuming "cannot be killed" is banned, and not "cannot die from old age".
The rest are very straightforward, but the businessman-lawyer in me might exploit a loophole or two in the criteria for the words "Invulnerable to Damage" and "Intangible".
I wanted to include Gandalf the White and Albus Dumbledore, but they're already having their run in the other tournament, so I decided to group them by color instead (the Dark Magician is clearly blue in the TCG, so there). Jace Beleren would have been a good candidate, but then mind control is banned. Other wizards to fit this trio could be Vivi Ornitier, and, of course, Doctor Strange himself (but since he's moderating the tournament, he may be too busy to compete). I know they don't have to be themed, but I like this one too much to pass up.
Summary of powers:
Merlin - Shapeshifting, transfiguration and animation of living and non-living targets, clairvoyance, time-travel.
Wizardmon - High tolerance to damage, weather control, lightning and fire magic, telepathy, flight, healing powers.
The Dark Magician - High tolerance to damage, levitation, various forms of dark magic, illusions and trickery.
In my mind, the team I nominated is perfectly legal, since it doesn't violate any of Doctor Strange's limitations, however they possess one or two problematic powers that could give an unfair advantage over most opponents. I'll let the Sorceror Supreme decide this one though.
Like all things U, I expect them to be banned pretty quickly.
If the team isn't banned, I would be more than happy to make a detailed write up in a paragraph for each character to flesh out their powers and abilities, so just let me know if you need anything.
I participate yearly in a survival challenge in which I am dropped off in the wilderness with 1 days rations, a knife, and no other supplies, and have to find my way home. This is typically several weeks hiking from civilization.
I have personally killed several bears in the course of this challenge, with the use of snares and other traps.
Team Multi-blade A trio of swordsmen who use more swords than they have arms. Roronoa Zoro - http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Roronoa_Zoro - Master of the three sword style and second strongest member of the Straw Hat Pirates. Killer B - http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Killer_B - Master of the seven sword style and Jinchuriki of the Eight Tails. Mifune - http://souleater.wikia.com/wiki/Mifune - Master of the Infinite One Sword style. A legendary samurai who earned the title "Sword God."
Your own team appears to violate Rule 2 with the Immortal Keyword.
If you are referring to the Doctor he should pass as it is possible to kill him/render him incapacitated under the 60 second rule.
When he regenerates it effectively takes him out of the game for the regeneration process and a good while afterwards whilst he makes sure he still has the appropriate amount of major body parts and they all work properly.

Question: are we able to nominate beings like the shinigamis from Bleach? They are pretty much "immune" to physical attacks as they spend all their time in the spiritual world... but in that world, their attacks affect themselves just the same as physical attacks affect normal beings in the real world.
2011: Best Mafia Performance (Individual) - Best Newcomer

They are pretty much "immune" to physical attacks as they spend all their time in the spiritual world... but in that world, their attacks affect themselves just the same as physical attacks affect normal beings in the real world.
So, are they immune or not?
I don't think they're immune. The fullbringers can hurt the shinigamis and they're just normal living people (With weird abilities but w/e)
Ok, I don't have time right now to find links, but would like to suggest/get vetted the following teams. Plus, I think these characters are all more or less universally known (except maybe Bastilla) (I know themes are optional, but also more fun :p)
Team Dark Heroines
Bastila Shan (KOTOR)
Evil willow (Buffy season six episodes 20-22ish)
Dark Phoenix (XMen 3)
Interesting but don't think I could take part in another tournament where people can just vote with absolutely no validation of it so to clarify does the rule of democracy mean they need to post at least a proper reason for vote and can't just post "vote team awesome because they are awesome"
Participants must explain their reasons for why they vote for who they choose to win, but they are not necessarily expected to counter a previously laid out argument for their vote to be valid.
For Example: Person A says that Dr. Doom can just absorb the powers of the Silver Surfer and instantly takes him out of the equation, therefore Dr. Doom wins. However, Person B can say that Silver Surfer is able to defeat Dr. Doom in hand to hand combat and thus defeats Dr. Doom. He does not have to acknowledge the Absorption argument for his vote to be valid, but he would be hard pressed to find more people to agree with his position if he cannot come up with a proper counter argument!
So before I go to the effort of finding a third for this trio I have an idea for, can I get a ruling on replicarter?
I'm assuming she's banned under the "Damned hard to kill" rule, but, you know, just in case
Due to the fact that it appears Replicarter can only be defeated by a very specific plot device (in this case, the ability to break down and destroy nano particles at the molecular level, otherwise she regenerates from all damage) than I would personally chalk that up to the "Invulnerable" keyword and thus disqualify her nomination.

If they are only able to be damaged by a specific plot device or power, and otherwise are immune to attack, then unfortunately the Shinigami would fall under the "Invulnerable" keyword and be subject to disqualification.
I will be compiling the nominations listed thus far and conducting the first series of "Power Reviews" in order to officially accept said nominations. No "seconding" necessary!

"But Faith is my Sword. Truth my Shield. Knowledge my Armor."
Question: With the same character nominated in both Von's and my trios (Vergil), even though they use different source material, will we both be allowed to suggest our teams? Will Von's be selected instead of mine due to him posting 50 minutes before I did? Will mine be selected instead of his because I followed instructions and linked sources the first time?

That's not necessarily true... she has several weaknesses like control magic. Since she is not living, Harry Potter world magic has trivial ways to deal with her. Also I imagine a certain level of heat would do it. (I think in Atlantis they nuke some replicators and that works but I cant remember for certain). Boba Fett would be able to kill her the same way I argued he could kill Doomsday (with a particle dis-integrator). Also a hacker given some time would theoretically be able to do it... If however you want to make sure that team "physical damage!" is able to beat every team then yes she is too good.
Well, too bad for Shinigamis. Once they are in ghost form (without a gigai) they are "intangible" and a team with only people like Wolverine, Batman or Monkey D. Luffy would never be able to hit them...
Well, I'll nominate a team, which like other teams is also themed! Meet Team Art Of Punching!

You all do realize that Doctor Strange's tournament doesn't have any time to prepare, right?
Don't get me wrong, I like Batman, Iron Man and Xanatos. There's a reason why the Batman Gambit and the Xanatos Gambit are named after them, but that's just it; their real strength comes from their ability to plan and use their vast resources to get the one up on their opponents by outwitting them.
Of course, if you all don't mind that, then that's alright, too. After all, it's a proven fact on these forums that Batman + Prep Time > Anything, so removing Prep Time from the equation would make it a "fair fight".
Also, as the Sorcerer Supreme said in his last post, there's no need to "second" any of the nominations here; they just need to pass the power level test.

Precisely.
Which is also valid, therefore I shall work on developing a better example nomination, thank you!

Well, I'll nominate a team, which like other teams is also themed! Meet Team Art Of Punching!
1) Might Guy. There aren't a lot of videos of him, but he's somehow a super-upgraded version of Rock Lee, which has a lot of videos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRXAod-cZE8 (Fire here comes not from special powers: it's the friction caused from the speed)
Rock Lee videos:

2) Monkey D. Luffy. Some feats (from oldest to newest):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq2Rc1heOOk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHzqkuYxd9Y
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epAX5wJkAMI (Giant Hands hardened as steel punching repeatedly at "machine-gun" speed!)
3) Uvogin. Some feats:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1Hw9Hnojkk (fun starts around minute 2)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNRDplYDFjk (continuation from the one above)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=159MaSFafbo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D__Rvt3rvh4 (again, fun starts about minute 2 - the chain in the end is "enchanted" to be unbreakable by him and others of his team)
[Clan Flamingo]
The clan for custom card creators!
I'll second Batman/Xanatos/Iron Man.

How well do you do against one?
