You there! Oh, you're still alive after all the stuff I put you up against, eh? Well, you're a tough one, to be sure. Our forum community has faced off the likes of Batman, Darth Vader, an army of invading Persians and some Savannah Lions, and you've been pitted individually against a Dominarian Grizzly Bear, and a Hogwarts Alumnus to really test your mettle. So far so good! You still seem intact for the next challenge.
As a spin off from the most recent thread involving me thinking of something to give you a challenge, (this one was requested by Soriel and Oni kadaki) I present to you an invitation to go, not against any singular opponent, but on an adventure.
For this challenge, you start as a character in an RPG, and your task is to get as far in the game as possible without dying. The question is, how far do you get?
Which RPG, you may ask? Here's the fun part, as you may select:
1) Either your favorite RPG, the one you are currently playing at the moment (or played last, if you have none at the moment); this is the preferred option.
OR
2) If you don't believe you'd last long in the first choice, you can select another one as an alternative.
Naturally, you have to tell us which one you choose, and then judge how far you get with the following additional rules:
a) For purposes of this thread, the term "RPG" shall be loosely defined; you can select any tabletop RPG or video game RPG, or even an MMORPG. Be creative. Have fun. Try not to die.
b) Assume that the RPG has been "converted" into real-life (and therefore not focused only on gameplay mechanics and number crunching stat calculation), and that dying in-game will not result in the potential for a respawn. You've only got one shot at making it in the game. Use it wisely.
c) There is no "character creation process". You'll have to settle with the stats that were rolled for you by your parents at your moment of birth, and any education or training you've had until now. For games where you get to pick a class, this is the only thing you can select for yourself. Choose one that suits you well.
d) Aside from being equipped with whatever items you are equipped with when you start the game, you will also be equipped with what you have on your person at the moment, any weapons you either carry with you on a regular basis (if you routinely carry pepper spray, a pocket knife or a brass knuckle, for example, you will have that with you for this battle), as well as any weapons you are trained to use properly (if you are trained to wield a sword or use a bow and arrow, for example, you will be equipped with that as well). For people with firearms, you will be granted the amount of ammunition you usually have on your weapon when it is fully loaded, plus the amount you usually carry for reloading. If you don't usually carry enough to reload your weapon, you'll be granted enough to reload it once fully (if you have a six-shooter, for example, you'll start off with it fully loaded with six shots, as well as six bullets to fully load it once again).
Now for the important questions:
Which RPG do you choose? Do you pick the one you're currently into, one you've played before, or did you look for a new one specifically for this challenge? Once you've chosen your new world, how does life look like for you? What class do you roll (for those games with such an option), what weapons and items do you have, and how far do you get? How do you use knowledge from our world to your advantage? Do you make it to the final boss? Or not much farther than the starting zone? Do you choose to simply live out life with the inhabitants of your new world? Or do you set out to take down the forces that threaten to destroy it? Or do you join those dark forces as a minion of evil?
I'm not expecting an answer for all the above questions, but the point of this exercise is to see what an MTGSer would do with an opportinity to travel to another world through an RPG, and how they would fare against one.
The ultimate question is: what would your impact be on the game?
I participate yearly in a survival challenge in which I am dropped off in the wilderness with 1 days rations, a knife, and no other supplies, and have to find my way home. This is typically several weeks hiking from civilization.
I have personally killed several bears in the course of this challenge, with the use of snares and other traps.
I pick Pokemon! Which I win because it's pokemon and I dont really have to worry about me dying. The only issue would be collecting my first pokemon.
More seriously I'd go into the Skyrim world. I'm actually good with a bow which the bows in that world are very overpowered so I give myself reasonable chances of survival although I am probably not dragon born so completing the main story line is definitely going to be outside my comfort zone. Chances are I'd get a lot skinnier early on as I struggle to survive and turn into a sneak attack range thief. Maybe even manage to go through the thieves guild.
Let's see. Im playing Persona 4 right now sooo...Being socialy awkward, and not very strong means Im going not going to get Social links and die in the TV World very fast.

Phantasy Star III, the game is based on the starting hero who is a prince with no magic and poor physical stats, the starting monsters are so pathetically weak that even an untrained upstart can beat them with nothing but a knife, (which you can purchase from the game stores, infact with game mechanics, I would be able to walk in with a fair deal of extra money most likely which I would use on Armour as I could sell extra knifes for extra money, If the game classified my knife as a "steel" knife than I am really cooking with a HUGE starting benfit) The NPCs have a great gradual pacing which would likely make life alot easier, I would not venture far from inns in the start, If I am deemed a "pure blooded oracian" (someone with no magical ability whatso ever) I could get the android characters to join me which would be good, I already know my way through most of the mazes like the back of my hand which would make life alot easier (as exploration is a huge part of the artificial difficulty in this game) I believe I could get through the first generation with little problem, Generation 2 Highly unlikely and Generation 3 not a chance as the monsters would just be too powerful for me to handle. UNLESS I could exploit my knowledge and have "control" over the other games allys, which then I would win since I have successfully completed solo challenges for many of the characters in the game. My Impact on the game itself would be monumental as I know a) The entire story line, b) Have NO problem telling the heros "all the hidden information that they normaly work their buts off for, location of hidden weapons/items, Since in this game world NO ONE seems to know how to lie, they will take me at face value! c) Make sure they (or me) use the Pron glich to ensure I have near invincability.
Trails in the Sky. Please for the sake of having a freaking chance, let me get a combat orbment, because every playable character has one.
Despite being relatively trained in naginata use, I'd have no chance against any of the main characters or main enemies. My closest comparison is to the main character, who at one point blocks the game's "bullets" with her staff. No S-Crafts (yeah, no, I'm not superhuman) and probably very little in the way of Crafts would force me to rely on the Art system.
The orbment is the only reason I'd have a chance, though my stats would be similar to the most physically-weak character - a little girl. It'd probably get me to Chapter 2 or so, where I'd probably get murdered by guys in black. If I survive that, I might be able to make it the whole way. Maybe. MAYBE.
My favorite RPG would probably be KOTOR, which I might be able to survive in as I'm skilled with firearms, if not the force and a lightsaber. However, I'm currently playing Dragon Age Origins, which would render my unloaded rifle useless after I repelled a single Darkspawn assault. As such, I'd be pretty dead.

As much as I'm against the OTT view that this card is going to solo tournaments, cure cancer and make Susan Boyle attractive I'm not really a fan of the opposing camp who think it slaughters puppies and sired Justin Bieber.
Any RPG where I can be a ranger. If i would go with DnD, I would go Ranger with a multiclass on Rogue at around level 3. I also plan early with what gold I have about what to purchase first (mainly potions, you can't have enough of those) and I never try fighting something that is humongously stronger than me (like being forced to fight a dragon while being a level 1).

Casual crazy magic player, otaku maniac, unrully cosplayer, what did you expect me to be?
I've been playing the crap out of Kingdoms of Amalur recently, and I think I'd make an okay Fateless One. All that walking around would get me in shape pretty quickly. I'd definitely take the Mage path, learn alchemy, and pack around as many healing, regen, and buff potions as I could carry.

Persona 2... do I get to awaken my own personas? if so I stand a chance with my firearm training
As per OP rules, anything a character starts out with, you'd have access to, too.
Interesting choices so far! It seems MTGSers (so far) lean towards fantasy and horror more than science fiction. We also seem to have a lot of potential mages, hunters and rogues here.
If it had to be my most recent RPG, that would be World of Warcraft. I'd start of as a human for the Alliance and probably want to make a name for myself as a mage (though I do have some sword and dagger skills; maybe a rogue, so I don't know yet), and if I get killed, at least the Horde will have access to my corpse and I can spend the rest of my existence as an Undead.
If I had to pick an RPG, I'd like to visit the world of Ragnarok (anyone familiar with that game will know why I picked "Poring" as a username), and probably be either a mage or a thief (actually, I can choose the path of the merchant, too, if I wanted to be a peaceful traveller), but it would largely be the same as the above scenario, only without the option of becoming undead, so I had better make it count. I might just make it to the rank of wizard later on with a bit of diligence.
To those who picked (even jokingly) Pokémon, which region would you start in, and how far do you think you can get? Would you catch your own first Pokémon, or ask the resident Professor for one, and which one would you try to acquire? Remember that it's taken Ash several seasons to get far enough in that world, and he's a native! Also, you're not guaranteed plot armor or safety in any way... the Pokémon world still faces off near apocalyptic scenarios in practically every game that's been released since Gold and Silver as well (and even Red and Blue had the threat of Mewtwo looming over everyone). You'll most likely need to be instrumental in hindering some sort of potential end-of-the-world event, so good luck with that.
Aside from Pokémon, are there any other "winnable" RPG's out there where your survival rate is still pretty good beyond the first few levels? Otherwise most of us will die, rather spectacularly, I might add.
This is a very good point. I assume most of you know the story lines and major plot points of each RPG you are currently in, so wouldn't that increase your survival rate a bit? Is it possible to use knowledge of the plot of Diablo 3, for example, to beat the game by informing the NPCs? Or knowledge of things like chemistry and physics in medieval fantasy settings to speed up the production of scientific inventions and tools in that universe?
Also, you can't rely on glitches. Remember that the RPG will be "converted" into real life, so add-ons, hacking, mods, cheats, etc. are a no-go. We're not plugging you into The Matrix here, and you are not Neo. You're going to have to survive by playing the rules of that world in addition to knowing the limits of your own mortality.
Fine, I will settle for "mearly" being able to speak the word of power (which they tell you in the game and is an actual word) their by giving me the end game weapon in the beginning.
For class, Engineer most closely represents me IRL.
Per the rules, I'd start with a 9mm pistol and shotgun, which doesn't really help much considering ME 3's starting weapons are much superior (at least, I'd hope they would be).
How far would I get? hahaha, I have a hard time imagining I'd get past the attack on Earth, at the beginning of the game. Me vs Reapers? No, especially if the game is translated into real-life, which must also mean that the reaper attacks aren't scripted sequences.
If I were to choose my favorite RPG of all-time, Baldur's Gate II, I think my starting out with modern firearms would get me a bit further. Perhaps, if I progressed through the game standing way in the back I could get a third of the way in.

If we ignore my medical requirements, I can definitely live and thrive there. It's a western with some anime elements. As long as I don't stick my head out or try to go through swamps alone, I should be fine, and the tech I know would give me an edge in business.
My favorite RPG would be the Ultima series (not online). I'd also survive well there provided I don't go prodding monsters, and the medieaval tech means I can do well for myself. I'll try to get close to Lord British, who is also from Earth. The guy has infinite healing and resurrection.
So... I get access to Google so I can lookup walkthroughs, right?
I haven't played any RPG's lately, but one of my favourites is Final Fantasy VII, so let's go with that. The protagonists in that game get shot multiple times in their very first encounter. I guess that's about where I'd end up dying. How sad.
If we retain full knowledge of a game series, then I'd pick Mass Effect 1. In the couple of years between ME1 and ME3, I'd save up as much as I could (I'm not sure what profession I could get in the future, maybe a really legacy programmer) and move to what I knew would be a safe location by the time ME3 rolls around and just play futuristic video games.

-=GIVE US SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN=-
I'm nerd enough to link my WoW Armory Though I'll put it in a small font.
Playing right now: Pokemon, Nuzlocke challenge, on Emerald.
Assuming the Nuzlocke basic rules stay (meaning: if it faints, it's dead, and I only get the first poke I encounter per route), I'll either melt in Electric gym (because Explosion) or Flying gym (curse you, Altaria with Earthquake!). Or get beaten by some random trainer dork, because I mis-switched.
Starter? The kung-fu chicken, of course. BA-CAAAW!
Hmmm ... other RPGs I recently played?
Rogue Trader. In the oh-so-friendly Warhammer 40k universe. Will be executed for heresy about half a minute after game start. Or, if fusing with my character, try out those awesome psyker powers I now have, overdo it, provoke a Daemon and get dragged into the Warp. Either way, I'm screwed.
Fallout New Vegas would be my most recent RPG and as such:
Strength: 5
Perception: 3
Endurance: 6
Charisma: 9
Intelligence: 8
Agility: 4
Luck: 5
Plus I'd have some sweet barter and unarmed perks.
It wouldn't be awful, but I doubt I'd go around murdering the world.
I feel good about my chances. (Dies to deathclaws)
Fine, I will settle for "mearly" being able to speak the word of power (which they tell you in the game and is an actual word) their by giving me the end game weapon in the beginning.
This is actually a very good way to break a ton of RPGs whose dependancy on powers involve either that or some sort of secret incantations. Anything involving "Harry Potter"-style spells could be beaten by a similar principle (though it would not work in any Harry Potter RPG, incidentally, since I doubt any of us have real magic capabilities).
So... I get access to Google so I can lookup walkthroughs, right?

I'm not sure if your internet coverage works in another dimension / universe.
Well, I think you both could survive relatively long in FFVII without powers. I mean, not every member of AVALANCHE is superhuman (Biggs, Wedge and Jessie come to mind). You could both probably make it until the destruction of Sector 7 in Disc 1 (by then I hope you both move out to somewhere else in Midgar).

Dude, those rules are wicked. I could never play a Pokémon game on that.

So the Mass Effect series is more or less beatable if you start off at 1 and move to the right planet before the events of 3 roll around... wow I didn't think of that! Gives me an idea... and makes me want to refresh my lore and start off at World Of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, and work my way up from there until Mists of Pandaria. At least I'd survive the Cataclysm, since I'd know which places would be safe from harm.
All in all, that's a good example of using knowledge of the game to survive. Great thinking!

Pokemon, hoeen, I would get to the league and eventually win. No need for the raquaza cheat,(you can catch him with a master ball before the league) I would most likely literally die from the fall!
My favourite RPG would be the kirby series. Super star ultra is more platform, but it's pretty fun, I would make it to the true duel arena then lose against the final boss. For mouse attack, i would lose against the possesed rat boss(he's pretty tough)

Perhaps "You versus the Pokémon League" should have gotten it's own thread, though I have a feeling that the vast majority of MTGSers would say that they'd be able to take on the Elite Four. Maybe the better question would be "How long would it take you to solo them IRL?", with options ranging from "less than a year" to "more than ten years". Either that or "You versus Team Rocket", and I'll give you all a year or so to train your own Pokémon to beat Giovanni and his minions.
Because... man, everyone here thinks they can solo the Elite Four so easily. In the anime, it takes Ash 80 episodes just to get past the Indigo League. Assuming the time between each episode is only a week (it's probably a bit longer than that), it takes him a year and a half to go from total scrub to competing in the big leagues, and even then, he doesn't beat the Elite Four (he does get to the top 16, though) nor capture a legendary Pokémon, even with the assistance and companionship of Misty and Brock. Johto takes even longer, with around 90 episodes, and he's supposedly a veteran by then.
I've played Squeak Squad / Mouse Attack... you are aware that you won't have Kirby's powers, right? That you are just your normal, day-to-day self? Are you sure you can take on the mooks befitting a pink puffball who is tough enough to fight in the resident Tournament here? If I were in your place, I'm not even sure I could make it to King Dedede at the end of World 1.

My favorite RPG would be the Ultima series (not online). I'd also survive well there provided I don't go prodding monsters, and the medieaval tech means I can do well for myself. I'll try to get close to Lord British, who is also from Earth. The guy has infinite healing and resurrection.

I haven't played any RPG's lately, but one of my favourites is Final Fantasy VII, so let's go with that. The protagonists in that game get shot multiple times in their very first encounter. I guess that's about where I'd end up dying. How sad.
Though I'll put it in a small font.

I hop off the train, probably sprain my ankle and promptly get taken out by the ShinRa guards at the station.

Class I'd probably be a mage type thing.
DnD (3.5, obvs obvs) would be the best for me cause Wizards are OP.
I'd probably go Psion however.

Plus I'd have some sweet barter and unarmed perks.
It wouldn't be awful, but I doubt I'd go around murdering the world.
I feel good about my chances. (Dies to deathclaws)
So Pro I have an alpha Volcanic Island
But I am obviously Neko so I am impurrvious to harm! And make ludicrous sums of gold from impawtient adventurers to boot.
Cool stuff Poring.

Ahhhh... Name Magic. Reminds me of Eragon.
Haha! Thanks! It wasn't entirely my idea though.
How well do you do against one?
My favourite RPG would be the kirby series. Super star ultra is more platform, but it's pretty fun, I would make it to the true duel arena then lose against the final boss. For mouse attack, i would lose against the possesed rat boss(he's pretty tough)
Thanks Argentleman;)

Whether it's a comedy or a tragedy, if there is cheering, the story will continue on.
Just like the many lives.
For the us who are still in it and still in the journey, send warm blessings.
