All five are transported into an Otarian Arena with no inherent elemental advantages in place. There is a back wall littered with a variety of mundane weapons that each person/goyf has access to should they choose to use them. But that is merely for show, as nothing on the wall bestows anything greater than your typical Core Set equipment of +1 power or toughness here or there.
Who wins in this grand melee?
The Black Mage with the mastery of blood magic capable of causing harm to himself in order to attain greater magical power?
The Blue Mage capable of casting repeats of his most used spells at instant speed?
The Green Beast who gets more and more powerful as the match goes on as different spells are cast and enemies are defeated?
The Red Mage with superior quickness and ability to strike first in melee skirmishes?
or the White Mage with the mastery over various kinds of weapons and armor at their disposal?
First off I am going to say Goyf and Bob are out, simply put WE being walkers (or gods) take huge hunks our OUR life force for their power frankly I don't see a 2/1 having enough life force to get any real use of their spell power, Goyf as a monster will likely be attacked first by our more knightly/red friends,
Next up Snapcaster has some soild chance here, reusable instance can protect him a LONG time, however I don't think he has the eddge enough to win, That honor goes to SFM who can make the best equipment ever out of NOTHING then make it materialize, Their is ALOT of good equipment in the MTG universe, (shield of Kaldra perhaps?? even any of the ones that materializes an ally would work here)
my vote is for snapcaster because of his ability to bring something back. It has a wide variety it could hit and could protect him or benefit him in any way he sees fit with the spell he/we choose.
Because Goyf might win if everyone starts out by ignoring the 0/1, because he'll get bigger and badder the longer it takes. If they don't know about their opponents, he'll end up growing big enough to take the remaining ones while they pick off each other and he avoids them.
Snapcaster Mage and Ash Zealot play off each other nicely, and will end up killing each other because of how their magic works, and they will see each other as a threat. This feud will feed Goyf's powers.
Stoneforge could use the ornamental equipment in the arena specified in the OP for a minimal edge over the others though, but without über equipments, she's going to have a problem.
As for Bob... well, he doesn't bring much to the table. The guy is an advisor to superior mages (that is, Planeswalkers). He's not one to do the dirty work of fighting by himself.
I'll chuck in a vote for Goyf, under the belief that the four humanoids will regard each other as the bigger threats and ignore the green beast until it grows too large to be ignored... and by then it's too late.
I participate yearly in a survival challenge in which I am dropped off in the wilderness with 1 days rations, a knife, and no other supplies, and have to find my way home. This is typically several weeks hiking from civilization.
I have personally killed several bears in the course of this challenge, with the use of snares and other traps.

interesting my view was the opposite, as a monster he would be viewed as the BIGGEST threat over "just another human" so would be whacked. first ie they would assume he is strong than he really is.
Being that each of these cards are from different blocks of magic (with the exception being Ash Zealot and Snapcaster) I would assume that these guys don't really know much about anyone beyond the obvious color pie implications.
And argument could be made that each of these 4 mages are very good at what they do, and thus aren't total nimrods. Thus they would recognize that a tiny tiny green creature would be highly suspect in a battle of the best.
Then again, an argument could be made that they aren't so sure WHAT this green beasty can do, and thus would sling around at least one instant and/or sorcery before realizing that hey, that really weak creature suddenly beefed up considerably.
As for which spells and abilities they have, including Dark Confidants "only having one toughness" arguments, I was more along the lines of imagining this fight in a similar vein to a MTG Novella. Not so much with a specific subset of abilities based on real cards, but with general spells cast in a narrative format, such as the Black Mage using curses and weakening spells, the Red Mage slinging fireballs and so on with no real set of power and toughness restrictions.
I hope that helps clarify a few things. There's still 6 days before the poll comes to a close!
Tarmogoyf is going down first. Then Snapcaster, Stoneforge, and Zealot square off and whoever comes out on top, Bob will step out of the shadows and take them out.

Cheeseburger, french fries, chocolate shake, somebody's mind I's about to take!
Well, if everyone believes that Goyf dies first because the other four decide to team up, then my vote's in for Bob now.
Seriously, the Blue and Red mages will fight with each other to the death (their magics collide and their ideologies differ; I mean come on, it makes sense both on flavor and mechanical levels considering their abilities and backgrounds), leaving a White Mage who doesn't have that much access to any real resources and will probably fail as a diplomatic voice of reason, and a sneaky Black Mage who will silently let their bickering be their undoing.

The setting is at the abandoned Grand Coliseum. Although abandoned and half of it has sunk under the Otarian swamp, it will serve as the location for one of the greatest battles in the Magic multiverse: the battle of the two drops.
The contestants of this battle are:
Stephanie - Hailing from Zendikar, she is a master of weaponry. She can improvise weapons from whatever is available around her and has the ability to wield them to perfection. Her primary weapon (outside of whatever she can wield) is unknown but rumor has it that she has the technology and means to just summon any weapon from the depths of the multiverse.
Tiago - An alchemist from Innistrad, he specializes in resonance magic. His primary weapon is a plasma cannon, which enables him to absorb mana signature from spells and amplify them to its original form. He then can used the plasma cannon to recreate them. He is also skilled in ambush tactics.
Bob - A character from Ravnica, he is known to have knowledge of epic proportions. Although with this same knowledge has some led to think has caused him to insanity. He wields a staff with unknown properties although it is arguable that his ability to twist words and ideologies is his primary weapon.
Ashley - Another character from Ravnica, she used to be a member of an unknown/secret special force of the Boros Legion and has since gone rogue to join the gateless movement. Her primary weapon is a purge mace and is skilled in mixed martial arts and battlefield tactics. She is trained to be as close as the perfect soldier.
On top of the warriors above, a resident of the decaying Coliseum, a Goyf looms within its walls. A beast that has evolved with the help of the remains of Mirari radiation and temporal fluctuations, this 22-25 foot monstrosity has nothing in mind but to devour.
------------------------------
The showdown starts as the warriors above enter the labyrinth within the walls of the coliseum. The goal is to be the last one out.
The first encounter was between Ashley and the Goyf. The light from the fire on Ashley's Mace must have attracted the Goyf. The Goyf charges at Ashley but Ashley was able to dodge the Goyf. With her swift movement and battle tactics, she was able to swing her mace at the Goyf but the Goyf did not even flinched at the attack. It was just as if she gave a warning slap. The Goyf, looking down at her, at its lunch. With its gaping mouth, The Goyf devoured Ashley and that was it for her.
While the "battle" between the Goyf and Ashley happened, Tiago and Bob finally came face to face. There was a conversation between them and instead of going into battle, they decided that they will team up. They believe that this will have a greater chance in beating the Goyf in doing so. They devised an attack plan. They then lured the Goyf to their direction, with Bob as the bait. The Goyf picked up and charges towards Bob. Out of nowhere, Tiago catches the Goyf of guard and snares it. The Goyf is now trapped but with its sheer strength, the snare cannot hold much longer. Bob then goes pulls a cover out of the tip of his staff; a poison tip. He then lunges the poison tip towards the beast. Then before Tiago can avoid, he has also been poisoned by Bob. The poison weakens the Goyf and the beast slowly dies. Luckily for Tiago, the poison was powerful enough to kill him fast enough that he did not suffer much long.
While all this happened, Stephanie saw the whole thing and had enough time to prepare. She knew Bob has smart enough to figure out how to kill her without a real fight. Instead of going head to head with him, she moved back. She then smashed a rock behind her, and a mechanized suit came to life. The mechanized suit then came between her and Bob. and started charging towards Bob. Bob tried to hide within the shadows of the labyrinth. Panicked, Stephanie draws a sword out of labyrinth walls. The sword illuminated the darkness of the coliseum. The mechanized suit then spotted Bob. The suit charges towards Bob. With his seemingly useless poison-tipped staff, he tries to battle the mechanized suit. The suit was relentless and on top of this, Stephanie was also fighting along with the suit. Eventually, Bob was caught of guard and Stephanie's sword pierces through Bob's abdomen.

I am convinced that WotC is "dumbing" the game because of all the stupid posts they come across on MTG-related forums
between dark confidant
tammmy
and ash zealot because neither are affected by topor orb.
tammy is useless when you use GY hate and so is zealot, and Dark confidant can be risky.
sealot wins because a 2/2 first strike haste is awesome
I like Stoneforge the best out of all these two-drops, because Skullclamp is the best thing ever. While Snappy and Bob's best uses are feeding the Clamp, Misty actually goes and gets it for you.
Blue: Snapcaster Mage
Green: Tarmogoyf
Red: Ash Zealot
White: Stoneforge Mystic

Goyf is just a dumb beater. If you don't feed it, it won't grow big. It's essentially a glorified Furby.
Tiago is more like a watch and learn guy. If he doesn't know how to do it, it can't do it. It's just a 2/1.
Bob is the closest competition. The problem with bob is he will give you answers, but they're not always the right answer.
Stephanie wins this because she has an armada of self piloting Gundam Suit. Not to mention an arsenal of heavy hitting weapons.
Ashley needs a substitute.

Because, you know, red is too fast for a 2-drop 2-drop.
If Ashley is indeed red's entry into the contest, then there's no way she won't take down Tiago. She exists to take down Tiago.
