This is a debate my friends and i used to have all the time, who would win in a strait up death-match on earth. The core teams from Gundam Wing or Evangelion?
Gundam Wing
Heero Yuy and Wing Zero,
Duo Maxwell and Death-scythe hell,
Trowa barton and Heavy-arms kai
Quatre Raberba Winner and Sand-rock
Wufei and Nataku/Altron Gundam
pro
have flight capability
well rounded fighting styles
more members
arguably better training
con
More fragile
cannot work with no pilot
no real protection aside from armor and wing zero/death scythe's shield's.
or
Evengelion
Shinji Ikari-Eva unit 01
Rei Ayanami-Prototype Eva 00
Asuka Langley Soru-Eva Unit 02
pro
AT Field (basically a very powerful electro-magnetic force-field generated by evas and angel that can resist a direct hit from a nuke)
Partly organic angel's as the core for the evas
Berserk mode/dummy plug system
More maneuverable
con
if not attached to a external power-source have a standard operating time of 2 minuets
Must sync with the assigned pilot to function
cannot fly
Personally my pick is the Evas. I have seen both animes and read 1 of the manga's many times over and from what i have seen i think the evas have the edge and would be the victors in a all out fight to the death.
Evas, if running on an S2 engine. What we see in the series is just a fraction of an Evas power. A Eva with an S2 engine is a living embodiment of a god, If all else fails, the Eva with an S2 can generate a sea of dirac and just turn everything within range into nothing (not that the fight will get to that point;
ATF is haxxors and lets evas hold an exploding nuke in its hands and just walk away).
Note that the Unit 01 has S2 engine later in the series. If you're taking Unit 01 from the period of time, then Evas win. This is like pitting Goku against Manny Pacquiao.
If, however, your're comparing Evas without an S2 engine (which it seems like it from your "con" of 2 minute limit), then anything from gundam beats it. All a gundam robot has to do is snipe the cable, or remain out of cable range (no range is actually given for the canle, but the evas can only function within and around the city limits unless using a battery) and snipe away. Given that Gundam robots can fly, this should be easy.
Didn't want to use the S2 evangelion's since as you said its like ssj4 gokuvs a hurcule when they are basically gods. Keep in mind though that at least sinji's eva 01 could just go berserk even if the power is lost from yui wanting to protect him. And at worst rei with a dying power supply could just grab a N2 mine and charge towards any gundam. Plus all the gundams say for Heavyarms and Wing Zero with the buster rifle are strongest up close rather than flying up in the air. Those pesky vulcan head cannons dont seem to have much range nor are they very accurate and id wager the buster rifle would have a hard time getting through a atf, Up close even for 2 mins i think the evas have an edge.

The thing is, they're only super powerful in their OWN universe, and the creatures of the Evaverse are WEAK. The Angels that the Evas struggle to defeat would be obliterated by any half way decent Gundam. Yeah, the Eva S2 is a god-compared to their own creatures. Thing is, the Eva mechs are pathetically slow, ill coordinated and ill concieved. Being the SSJ4 of the Evaverse is roughly equivalent to being the most athletically gifted ten year old-fine for their own rank, but if you put them in with grown adult athletes ,9 times out of 10 they'd be left in the dust.
The S2? At best on par with the Destroyer from Seed Destiny.
Holding a nuke in it's hand isn't a big deal. Nukes are almost obsolete in most Gundamverses as even a typical mobile suit can handle it and stay in good shape. Treize even said "there was a time when wars could be won with the push of a button".
Hell, given the way the Eva's work, the Unicorn Gundam could probably hack them and turn them against their pilots.
As already mentioned, your pitting kids against adults...military trained adults. Who have gone through hell and back with each other. lol.
As for the ATF shield thingy...there was a mobile suit in Wing (I wanna say it was Mercury, but its been a very long time since I've watched Wing) that had an impentrable shield...which the Gundam's proved that wrong.
Also...Gundanium is the hardest material known to man...so there isn't really anything the Evas could do to a Gundam.
As much as I like Evangelion I believe Gundams would win this fight.
As fast and as strong as Evagelion units can be even in the latest remake they have limited armaments and a limited power source. The metal alloy covering them is nowhere near as strong as Gundanium. The piloting apparatus in Evangelions are weak and susceptible to damage. Not only that the pilots themselves receive the mental feeling of the damage to their Eva so in this case feeling white hot bolts of beam rifle shots and vulcan and machine gun rounds. The pilots themselves, as previously stated, are indeed children whose only battle experience are machine aided sparring matches and the occasional angel fight.
The only way I can see an Evangelion Unit winning is if Shinji turns into his Angel form from the end of the second film but the fight most likely would never reach that point with all the damage he would sustain before then mentally and physically.
Gundam units generally are packing an enormity of Weaponry. There are beam rifles of various strengths, machine guns, vulcan cannons, sometimes nuclear powered weaponry, grenades of various strengths, rockets, missiles, and bombs and let us not forget the beam sabers. Funnel weaponry is also used in some of the series which are weapons that the pilot doesn't even have to control they just attack in randomly generated patterns using beam technology.
Gundanium is also something that must be discussed for it is a material that simply cannot be damaged by normal means. The only time Gundanium as far as I know has actually been damaged was in the last episode of the original Mobile Suit Gundam when Amuro's RX-78-2 sustained a concentrated amount of beam fire from Char Aznable's Zeong. Beyond that special super heated blade the evas use, if that, I doubt there is little else they could do to actually damage a Gundam Unit.
The pilots of mobile suit units generally are also coming from experienced periods of war. Especially the pilots in the Gundam Wing era. I don't think there is much young Shinji could do against a highly motivated and excellent pilot like Hiro Yui.
We are also talking about the Gundam Wing universe so we must also bring up the idea of the Zero System in the Wing Gundam. It basically allows the pilot to become a new type from the Universal Century Gundam story lines. He would predict the movement and attacks of the Eva Units before they are completed therefore massively putting the fight in the court of the Gundam.
The maneuverability and speed of a Gundam unit from the Gundam Wing universe needs also be addressed due to it being crucial in this fight where speed could also be a big factor. The Eva Units showing they can run insanely fast on occasion is a problem but the fact that a Gundam unit being practically impervious, has a longer battery life, and may have the ability to sustain flight makes the Eva's ability to run moot.
The AT Field of an EVa is more or less the only thing I can't really argue against for it seems to be something no Gundam unit could ever get through once it is generated.
However, the real question being can Shinji raise his A.T. field at will and or can he use it offensively?
If Shinji can then I could definitely see a fight the Evas could bring to the Gundams that would probably result in the Evas winning.
On the other hand, If he can't and it only happens when he losing control like the first time he went berserk, then I'd say Shinji would lose. It would either be by a Gundam getting in close enough to do enough damage using one of it's weapons to either knock Shinji unconscious or do enough damage to the Eva Unit to make it die essentially. Or they fire upon the power cord keeping the Eva Unit powered and wait out the time left laying down cover fire or flying around maintaining distance while firing.
The Evas are much much larger than the Gundams from what I remember. The Gundams would uselessly try shooting through the AT fields, but The Evas would simply swat them out of the sky and step on them.
