After being with Apple since the gen 1 iPhone first hit the shelves, last night I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 5.
So what do I need to know? It definitely doesn't handle like an iPhone, I'm still trying to get used to it.
What apps do I need to get? I'll admit a huge reason I wanted to switch was the possibility for emulators.
Any really cool features I probably wouldn't think to look for or notice?
There are several emulators, both free and paid, that can be obtained from the playstore.
Note that while emulation is as good as it gets, the android has a limitation of only being able to detect 2 seperate touch events. (well, at least, the last time I check the android emulation scene). What this means is that you can't press more than a total of 2 button/directions at a time. Some emulators (for example, epsxe) have _slightly_ fixed the problem in the sense that it's possible to move diagonally and press a button. Still, any non rpg game is going to be almost unplayable. Some emualted/ported games (I'm looking at you star control) didn't even bother trying to detect more than 1 touch event, which is like playing a game where you can only use one finger.
MKV format -- the android is inherently incapable of playing the mkv format (again, this may have changed since the time I last checked). Some video players will advertise that they can read the mkv format.... which is true, except they can't play it. The only video player that I've tried that's even remotely capable of doing so is MX Player.

Best app I can think of is MTG Familiar. It's a MTG card database, along with card pricing, using TCGplayer, a life and mana counter, and a rules book, all for free. Best app on my phone.
As far as emulation goes, if you want to root your phone, there is a ton of stuff I know android can do. My bother in law had an older android (forget the model, but I remember if came with a dummy laptop) that he rooted, and was able to play PS1 games, using a PS3 controller, with video going to dummy laptop. it was pretty impressive to me. Now he had to overclock the phone to do this, and the battery life suffered even with the battery expansion case. Still pretty neat.

I mean, the games are largely the same, if slightly less restricted than the App Store.
