I'm just not into the whole "OMG let's hide all the buttons to make the interface pretty and blank and white!" scene that mac loves, google loves, and now mozilla is copying.
The annoying thing about firefox four is that the header/toolbar actually got bigger, AND buttons moved from the toolbar to being nested in dropdown menus. The old toolbar was big enough to hold everything that I'd reflexively hit throughout the day. Now things are all over the place.
I don't like having a million tabs, so I'll make multiple windows and have tiny groups of tabs. One group of tabs might be magic stuff, another window might have some work related tabs... etc. So I'm hitting "new window" a lot.
New Window is now super buried! It's in a firefox > new tab > new window dropdown.
If some of you are scratching your heads as to why I don't just hit ctr + N, let me explain. I use a macbook pro at home and a PC at work. The hotkey buttons on the mac aren't in the same place as they are on a PC, and since I use both computers about 50% of the time, my hotkey flow is all messed up. I can use hotkeys, but it interrupts my touch typing, and it was a lot more reflexive to just click for things.
Anyone want to tell me why "File, Edit, etc, etc, help," are old regime and are being taken away from every program?
I could understand if no one was using them and they were taking up space, but honestly the space that they were in is just blank and empty and apple-ified now. They aren't using it for anything, couldn't they have left my interface alone?
Are we just on a slow march towards typing on blank rectangles because apple/google/mozilla thinks it's pretty?

I'll be sad if people don't start calling The Chain Veil "Fleetwood Mac."
I won't argue on points, but there is something firefox added recently (I believe some 3.6 builds had it) that may interest you:
Hit Command+Shift+E (I assume this is CTRL+Shift+E in Windows) and you'll get an interesting interface which is essentially a grouping system for multiple groups of tabs. On a mac, this is also the button on the far right of all tabs.
I will say that I get what you're saying on the keyboard shortcuts being different on different OSs; I actually work with three different laptops daily, each with different placements of the CTRL/Command key. (one of the PCs has CTRL as the furthest-right, the other has a function key) I'd honestly just say that this is something that you need to force yourself to just work with. The incorrect entries (accidentally pressing CTRL+N on a mac or ALT+N on PC) don't really affect anything, so it's something where doing it wrong is just something I occasionally get hit with, and the adjustment remains when I use that machine the rest of the day.
I'm not sure if this is how it works on a Mac, but if you hit "Alt" the classic menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc.) will appear at the top of the screen. I just do that, rather than bothering with the new Firefox button.
Fyi, you can go into the settings and make FF4 look almost exactly like 3. File, edit, bottom tabs, etc can all be returned. That's what I did since I really hated the new layout as well.
I'm not annoyed with it at all. Honestly, I have the mac version, and it doesn't look like Firefox did that. I can't even find the Firefox button you're talking about.
At the same time, when I installed Firefox 4 I also cleared out a bunch of space on my hard drive, and now my computer's performing like 5 times faster. So. No issues with FF4 here.

Yeah; I'm also annoyed with FF 3.xy. It's a resource hog, all the more made worse by my computer being crappy.
I'm just not into the whole "OMG let's hide all the buttons to make the interface pretty and blank and white!" scene that mac loves, google loves, and now mozilla is copying.
I don't dig its aesthetics but, as others have posted, it's undoable.
New Window is now super buried! It's in a firefox > new tab > new window dropdown.
Perhaps it's time to change to another browser, say, one with a lesser market/usage share?
Are we just on a slow march towards typing on blank rectangles because apple/google/mozilla thinks it's pretty?
Unfortunately and if you're feeling the cynicism or pessimism, yes.
Personally I like the new layout. I don't think I ever click on anything there, just use shortcuts (I understand this doesn't work for you). Taking two seconds longer the rare times I need to is worth it for me for having a less cluttered space.
I could understand if no one was using them and they were taking up space, but honestly the space that they were in is just blank and empty and apple-ified now. They aren't using it for anything, couldn't they have left my interface alone?
I'm not sure if you're including FF4 in this but if so you're wrong. In FF4 there's no blank space - they've completely removed that space.
I'm currently more annoyed by 3.6(.16). Either one of the addons or Firefox self appears to have a memory leak, since it's memory usage increases over time to that point that I have to shut it down so I can actually use my computer again.
