So, MTGS has been in existance now for 5 years (technically, it's a few months longer than that, but for all practical purposes, this forum began in its current form on 1-1-2005, following the great exodus from MTGNews.)
I registered that day, 1-1-2005, and have posted regularly ever since. The forum today has over 52,000 registered members. The narcissist in me wondered how many other members were here on "Day 1" and are still here 5 years later - i.e. who are the very oldest active members.
So I did a search.
The parameters were that the person had to have joined on 1-1-2005 (or before), and have made a post in the past 5 months. Five months was a completely arbitrary number but seemed reasonable for deciding who was still "active."
Got this:

In no way shape or form am I trying to suggest that the people on this list are "better" than anyone one else (unless you are me, in which case, wooo, go me!) If you change the dates around just a little, more people appear. And obviously the date someone joined doesn't say anything else about them. It's just a snapshot in time. Lots of other people are members who simply don't post in the forums, and there's nothing wrong with that either. But I thought it was interesting.
I would give a special shout out to the five members who joined before "Day 1" - back in September 2004 - and are still around. They would be the ultimate vets.
In any event, Happy five years MTGS. Here's to many, many more.

Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.
I lurked all the way back at MTG News since early 2004, then I lurked to the exodus, and then finally I decided to make an account in the beginning of April. Probably should have created the account sooner but I was only 14 back then lol.
It's just amazing to think that 5 years have already gone by.
I think the bulk of people who filled Salvation in the early days joined after the 1st - within that first tumultuous week. I know I joined up on Day 2, when it seemed that this wasn't just a kneejerk site built in rebellion that would die in a week.
It's cool that there have been people here that long. I've got a few music boards I've been at for a long time. I haven't even been here a year yet. Great site. This post does have me curious about something. What was this "Exodus" of people fleeing MTGNews? What was the catalyst for the Exodus? Etc? Etc?
Maybe you'll get Archenemy cards in your Duel Decks From The Vault: Deck Builder's Toolkit All-Foil Duels of the Planeswalkers Downloadable Content Expansion (Tactics Edition).

MTG Salvation lay relatively dormant and forgotten until January 1, 2005, when a number of staff members from MTGNews, including rancored_elf and urzassedatives, announced their resignation from the Staff on the website front page and as a forum-wide announcement. Their reason was in protest of the man appointed to oversee the forums, Subterranean Spirit, by Raa, the owner. Within minutes, several decided to use this to their advantage, spamming the MTGNews forums with links to MTG Salvation.
When MTGNews was temporarily closed to the outside to remove the spam and lawlessness that had accrued since the announcement, a significant number of the most prominent MTGNews posters, including rancored_elf, began posting on MTG Salvation. Quickly, it became as active as MTGNews had been the day prior, and the presence of older members contributed significantly to the validity of the site. By the time MTGNews was reopened a few hours later, many saw it as "the new MTGNews".
While MTGNews was open again, Subterranean Spirit began to enforce a policy of banning any member who mentioned MTGSalvation in their signature or elsewhere, which was in stark contrast to the previous policy of allowing any advertisements in signatures. This, coupled with the protests of important members and the banning of several others, led to MTGnews becoming partially abandoned. Most of the members who were banned relocated to MTG Salvation.
tl;dr version: People were fed up of the management at MTG News and expressed their disgust by deserting the site to go to MTG Salvation.
Who would have thought that Cynical and myself would be in that group of people.
I'm not entirely sure what this means, but I suppose it's a compliment of some kind. I'm way too addicted to the internet to quit any forum I'm active at really, even though I don't think I've posted about magic in about 3 years.
I didn't know about MTGS until I got disenchanted with Wizards forums and MTG New's spoilers and very empty forums. I lurked long before I joined, which was sometime in '06, and nearly 4 years later I still lurk more than I post. Prolly cuz Mams disappeared and the forums grow so cold without Mams effulgent presence.
Can't believe that it's been 5 years ago now. I've been here for the entire ride despite my register date, but it's awesome to see how much the community has thrived and evolved since the days of MTGNews. Personally I'd like like to thank Hannes for his massive support (if Hannes hadn't came along and bought our vBulletin license and made this website, the original server's bandwidth would've ran out within 3 days) and the lot that helped herd the wayward MTGNewsers here, including Xen for giving everyone a gathering spot in the massive transition. Sure there was some drama back then, but the MTG community has really flourished here and ended up bigger than 'News ever could've been.
Ah....man.....I sadly missed the cutouff by 10 days....I think I'd been browsing since the third day of the Exodus, but there was a Guildpact card in the Rumor Mill I just HAD to comment on. Plus, the art section.

And yes, no incantatrix for you. Or anyone. That class makes puppies cry. Mostly because they are the former Big Bads who have been Baleful Polymorphed into said puppies. By you. Because you're an incantatrix.

I suppose it's true. Though the logistics implied in a human/Great Wyrm Prismatic Dragon pairing makes me shudder.
...Something tells me that even should all arcane casters in the world unite, that the Grease spell would NOT be sufficient.
My ex-boyfriend had sent me an email letting me know about everyone (including the clan that I belonged to at the time - the Called) moving to MTGS, so the next time I had internet access I joined. I sure feel like an old-timer around here sometimes.
Thank's for the plug SA. You should come visit more often.
Day 3 here. At the time "the called" was the only place I hung out. Once they moved to salvation there was no reason for me to stay at news. Not to mention half our clan was banned by subterranean's mad rampage.
Cheers,

I joined around the same time as Yukora and AoK. I was a frequent lurker at 'News from '02-03, but didn't join until a few years later. Sure has been a long time...

Some are better off forgotten but, the good ones make up for the them.

A friend of mine finally told me bout this site when we both found MTGN lacking, and I haven't been back to that site since.
