How to I travel between Routes?
Travelling between routes is done by rolling a 100-sided die. The minimum number of rolls to pass through a route will be mentioned in the FIRST post of a Route thread. You can stay longer if you want.
Rolling a die is done like this:
[DICE*] # [/DICE*]
# is the number of sides the die has (usually 100, unless specified by a WPL)
NOTE: Remove the two * for it to work.
Based on what a player rolls, something might happen. Random wild encounter, a trainer battle, sometimes even finding an item or triggering an event. It's all determined by some charts only the WPLs can see, so it's a mystery. Then, once that encounter is complete (unless it's a big event), roll again . . . . this process is repeated a number of times until the minimum is reached. A player may decide to make additional rolls, if they wish to stay in the area for a longer period of time.
NOTE: The minimum only applies for a player's first passage through the area, and the rolls must be consecutive.
Example 1: Player A passes through Route 1 and enters Route 2. He then decides to go back to Route 1. Since it was already travelled, he only makes one encounter roll for the full route.
Example 2: Player A rolls in Route 1 once, then goes to Livian to heal his pokemon. Going back on Route 1, Player A needs to make 2 rolls again, since it was not completed the first time.
Do the Gyms need to be completed in a specific order?
NO, they do not. Each Gym Leader will have multiple teams of Pokemon depending on the badge-count of the challenging trainer. The more badges you have, the stronger the team you will face.
How do I become a Gym Leader? What about a member of the Elite 4?
1) To become a Gym Leader, you must have at least 2 badges and a team of 6 pokemon. Once this is met, you need to contact the Pokemon League Administration and book a test. Successful candidates will then be granted the ability to open ONE new Gym of their choosing.
2) To become part of the Elite 4, you must have 8 badges and challenge the Pokemon League. Once you beat someone in the Elite 4, you can stop the challenge and take a spot in the group, knocking out the first elite trainer you faced. (example: If you beat the first two and stop, YOU become the second trainer, the second one becomes first, and the first one is released)
3) It's possible to train under a Gym Leader for a while. During this apprenticeship, you may be required to capture or use specific pokemon. Special missions may also be available through these apprecticeship programs that may not otherwise be available to trainers.
What items will be available?
All four standard Pokeballs, basic potions and medicine will be available throughout the game. New, WP-specific items may be introduced as well (they will appear in the WP-specific Items thread).
TM/HMs will exist, but as special items and/or rewards for completing tasks.
Berries will be around, in what capacity is uncertain. Tasty snacks, and an RP device for trainers right now. (Your pokemon may only like certain types of berries, or any berries from a specific area, etc.)
Shiny pokemon?
Undecided yet, but they are EXTREMELY rare. There may be a minor variance on occasion (Rattata with different coloured eyes, for example).
How does fishing work?
Rods will be available for purchase in a couple locations, as will different colours of lures. This is where things deviate from the games. The colour of lure you use will have an impact on the type of creature you can catch while fishing. If something nibbles, you will be asked to make a roll. This is like a wild encounter, but DOES NOT guarantee a pokemon will bite. The WPL will advise if a creature bites, then you make a post about whether you ignore the bite, or reel it in, with obvious results. The encounter continues normally from there.
Fishing will be possible from any ferry dock, or similar location. In addition to this, any Route along the edges of the region can be fished from, though it may take an encounter or two to get to the water's edge. Inland regions will most likely have some sort of water as well, whether it's a stream, pond, small lake, etc., that may be fishable, and again may take an encounter or two for the player to reach.
There are Legendaries in each region that are specific to that area. Will Risin have the same?
Yes. I will be generating my own set of Legendary pokemon for Risin, mostly for flavour reasons.
What about numbers? Are there PP, HP, levels, stats, etc. we need to keep track of?
This is a free-form RP. Numbers will only slow things down, and if you have ever seen the anime, you will know that numbers don't always matter for the outcome. The WPL(s) will notify you of when evolution begins to happen, when new attacks are learned, etc. We do have basic numbers of our own.
So . . . what about money?
Money is handled the same. Starting trainers all receive 5000 pokedollars, and defeating an NPC trainer will yield small amounts as well. A player can sell items the find to shops/other trainers as well, or even pokemon of they were so inclined. Participation in events (whether WPL-run or town-based like contests), starting a job (a previous version of this WP had a character training to be a Pokeball crafter), there's many ways to earn money if you really need to for whatever reason.
Then how are we supposed to battle?
Again, free-form RP. But remember, YOU are responsible for YOUR TEAM ONLY! Be fair about what happens, your pokemon will not avoid every single attack, and you do not decide if your attacks hit your opponent. That being said, detail your attacks as much or as little as you like. . . .
"Pidgey used Tackle on Totodile." is very bland, and sounds easily avoidable.
"Pidgey folded its wings back against its body, and dove down into Totodile. It picked up speed as it dove, aiming for the torso of the water-type pokemon. Wind whistled through it's beak, growing louder by the second." is much more visually evocative, and exciting to read. . . . and all it takes is an Out of Context (OOC) comment at the end of the post saying "OOC: Tackle" to eliminate any confusion about what the attack was.
How many moves can any single Pokemon have?
As many as it can learn. There's no maximum.
What about Abilities (Sturdy, Rock-head, etc.), and natures?
Abilities and natures are RP tools, and should not be played up during battles. Again, for simplicity's sake, since numbers are not being used for battling.
I want my Pokemon to do a move that it doesn't know . . .
Unlearned moves are allowed, to an extent. However, they are wildly unpredictable and somewhat less effective (feel free to be creative about the description of these). Also, be reasonable. A Bulbasaur in early stages cannot use Solarbeam, and can never use Hydro Pump or Fire Spin. Ponyta can use Double Kick, but Iron Tail or Poison Sting are not possible. (Just a couple examples). Don't abuse this unlearned move stuff, or the WPL(s) will be forced to take appropriate actions.
Using an unlearned move requires a d100 roll, with the resulting number representing the effectiveness of the attack. 100 would be a full power attack, 1 would be effectively a failed attack. Again, this falls under how well you RP the events. (Fire Spin rolling 1 -- A small stream of flames spins on the ground and snuffs out in the wind . . . rolling 100 -- A massive jet of flame begins to swirl like a tornado, and moves to encompass the opponent)
Moves can only be learned through conventional means (level progression, TM/HM items, tutors, and breeding) If a move exists on any of those lists, then it's possible to use it unlearned within reason.
Combining moves can create interesting effects, without the risk of failing the attack. Bulbasuar covering itself with Poisonpowder, then tackling an opponent is completely acceptable. Steelix using Iron Tail in conjunction Constrict or Wrap, then slamming its opponent into the ground is another example. Be creative, sometimes your existing moves can give you a new effect, or something similar to what you want.
Something you are not sure about, and not covered already? Post your question below!
Just something to keep in mind: While I may not always require a d100 roll for something not already specified, if you feel one might be necessary for what you're trying to accomplish then go ahead.
Basically, it comes to something like this: When in doubt, d100!
k i had a few questions involving additional gear. Now i realize that we dont start out with any but i have a few quesions about obtaining/using them.
1. Is it assumed that we get a map? Im sure it would be perfectly fine to buy one, i would just like to know if its nescessary or if we start out with one.
2. Are bikes/speed shoes available? Im not sure how they work, but id assume they reduce the rolls you need to go through routes.
3. what about Pokegear? Pokenav? I know in their respective games, you basicly got them for free and you started out with the pokegear. Do/can we start out with them, or will we have to quest/buy them?
How does pokemon storage work?in the games, they used a computer, but in the show, they went back to professor oak? if you are using the show's way of storage, will the pokemon go to professor foxwood, or can they go to a person of our choosing?
The people that play legacy / vintage always amuse me. They want their formats to be represented more. They want more tournaments. But when anyone suggests allowing more people access to the formats by reprinting cards, the same people start screaming about the reprint policy.
1) Yes, maps are assumed with a standard PokeDex. See WP-specific Items for the image.
2) Bikes and speed shoes are somewhat irrelevant, I think, with the minimum number of rolls being low. Most Routes (there might be an exception or two as things move along) will be 2-3 rolls, but trainers are always able to stay longer if they wish, shuffling about the grasses and looking.
3) Thanks, make me do fast research
. . . . I think most of the extended functionalities are not required. The PokeDex has a built-in Town Map that updates as needed, as well as a feature similar to an RSS (RRS?) Newsfeed, the Pokemon News Network thread. Time seems unnecessary at the moment, and the Cool/Beauty/etc. trackers are probably useless unless/until I start the Contest circuit. Trainers aren't stationary, but I think I might set up a sort of text-messaging system in the near future. . . . If I decide to make any changes to the PokeDex, I'll announce appropriately, and Pokemon Centers will have free replacements if required.
4) Storage was going to be anime-based, with extra pokemon being transferred to Professor Foxwood's lab in either Newbloom or Livian. Every Pokemon Center, like the games, is assumed to have a terminal for switching stored and active pokemon.
Asked this in my edited post in Route 2, but might as well ask it here so more people are likely to read it.
At what point does an unlearned move become a learned move? In other words, how many times do we have to roll the die before we can use the move without rolling?
Moves can only be learned through the conventional means:
-- "level" progression
-- using TM/HM items
-- breeding
(I use serebii.net for most references) If a move is listed under Egg, Tutor, level progression, or TM/HM, then it's possible to use the move unlearned, within reason.

ooh...I wonder why nintendo diddnt think of this. seems like a cool idea.

2) Is there a storyline, or will it be like the video games?
3) Can a character start with anything in their inventory other than money?
4) Can we describe anything other than something directly under the control of our characters/our Pokemon? (the landscape, an NPC's reaction, etc.)
5) Egg Moves: Can characters get Pokemon with these moves already learned, other than by breeding Pokemon they've already caught?
6) Replicating the function of a HM move out of battle without knowing that move (Fly, Surf, etc): Is this entirely freeform (e.g. I have Squirtle pull my surfboard across the ocean), is it arbitrarily restricted to Pokemon with certain characteristics (e.g. I can surf on Blastoise but not Wartortle or Squirtle), can any Pokemon that learns the move in question use it (e.g. I teach my Pidgey Fly...now fly me across the ocean, lil' pardner), or is it effectively locked-off for power level purposes?
7) How does a character become inactive? Can a character be re-activated? Can we have multiple characters?
I try to update when I can, and have stated that I have intentions of updating once a day. The reality, however, is that I can manage 2-3 updates each week . . . I'm a college student, and school takes precedence over just about everything else, so when I get busy, updates tend to happen less frequently . . .
2) Is there a storyline, or will it be like the video games?
Yes, and no. Every character has their own unique story to be told, though there is a basic setup that is best described as a mix between the games and the anime.
3) Can a character start with anything in their inventory other than money?
Yes, subject to approval of WPL(s).
4) Can we describe anything other than something directly under the control of our characters/our Pokemon? (the landscape, an NPC's reaction, etc.)
There is some freedom for description of landscapes, moreso for when one is searching for pokemon. The area you're in might affect what you can find (read as: WPLs would reference a different d100 chart)
5) Egg Moves: Can characters get Pokemon with these moves already learned, other than by breeding Pokemon they've already caught?
Egg moves are usually given out to each starter, for a bit of variety, and yes an occasional wild pokemon may have an egg move in addition to its own set.
The game has not progressed to the point where HMs need be introduced yet, so I've not considered all aspects of their use/abuse in Risin at this point. Though it does stand to reason that 'fair use' would apply. For example: Pidgey could learn fly, but could it carry a person and their gear? Most likely not. Pidgeot? Sure. . . . but again, HMs technically don't exist yet.
7) How does a character become inactive? Can a character be re-activated? Can we have multiple characters?
Active and inactive are really just terms used for when somebody will be away from the WP for a while. Say you went on vacation for a couple weeks, and were not going to be using a computer while you were gone. Make a post in the Active/Inactive thread about it, so the WPL(s) know that you're away and not to wait for your posts to continue, and have an approximate idea when you can be expected to return to posting for your story.
