Taking a quick look at the scoreboard, it seemed like the top of the field was on their last legs and had little room for error. All Josh could do was press on and hope they screwed up. (Normal)

Josh could see the dragon-type from before at the end of the tunnel. Maybe this was a sign he was gaining ground on the field, after all. He could hear a lot of Pokémon breathing heavily--more so than his own.
Another Dodrio nudged Garchomp, though barely so, on the way out of the tunnel. There was only one more spire field after this, and they'd be virtually home free. If not physically, most of the field was mentally sweating. Some of the racers toward the back of the pack smiled, having saved their energy for this run. Now was their chance to make a run at the leaders!

Obstacle 12: The third spire field--the largest and most densely populated of the three, making it the most dangerous. Just as with the previous field, racer collision is a real danger, particularly since the track itself curves to the right gradually the entire way through. Racers may take a steep Endurance penalty to bash through this Obstacle.
Garchomp got bumped again but managed to stay on the track.
As they came up to the spires Rai slowed Garchomp way down, more for his own sake than that of Garchomp. He would need to be fully alert for the final streches.
Josh didn't say anything more. Twilight knew what he had to do, and the rider wanted to concentrate on guiding his mount away from the pillars, finding the ideal way to weave among them...hopefully without being rammed. (Normal)

Obstacle 13: Riders can breathe easy, but Pokémon can't--the stress is probably starting to take a toll on them as they head into this 180-degree, uphill turn to the right.
Garchomp sensed his rider`s exhaustion, slowing down more than normal and giving Rai only a slightly bumpy ride.
Now in the home stretch Rai urged its mount to push it. "Thanks for the breather buddy! Now lets punch it!" Garchomp sped up faster and faster, swimming up the slope.
Josh was excited to leave the spire field and reach the beginning of the end. It was almost over. If he could just keep his current position, maybe gain one more, he'd be really proud of Twilight. (Normal)

Dawn and her Meganium bumped into Garchomp from behind. The dragon-type's swimming was much more labored now--it was as though it was trying to maintain its balance despite its dizziness. Any sort of nudge from anything now would surely send it over the edge.
All Josh cared about at this point was finishing the race...maybe making a run on the Pokémon in front of him. It would be embarrassing to crash right before the finish line.

Obstacle 14: A gentle uphill curve to the left followed by a straight shot to the finish line. Though riders are likely pushing the Pokémon to the brink in this last charge to the finish line, they still have to make sure they actually finish the uphill climb.
"Hang... in th..e... G..chomp!" Garchomp only half heard Rai's commands. Still even in its dizziness its will to win remained. It charged ahead without concern for itself, it didn't even realize it was in a race.
Rai attempted to control the gradually berserking Garchomp, half dizzy, half enraged. Rai pulled the reins hard attempting to steer the out of control Garchomp towards the finish line.
"Quick Attack, Twilight! We can catch those guys in front of us!" Josh shouted, along with a bunch of other racers issuing similar orders. There were a lot of close battles coming up to the end, and some of them had been waiting for a straightaway for the entire track.

Even going uphill, the Pokémon pushed ever faster, trying to get ahead at the last moment. Twilight and Garchomp both won their last-second battles, gaining position at the line. The checkered flag waved, both of them happy with their performance.
Rai miraculously avoided hitting anyone and Garchomp stumbled across the finish line before collapsing in a heap. "Great job, buddy! You did awesome!"
After the medical staff saw to Garchomp and gave him enough first aid to stand, they made their way to the trophy presentation. While he was a little disappointed he didnt win he applauded loudly when the trophy was handed to Allen, one of the Dodrio trainers. He and Garchomp would have to get stronger and get him back in the next race.
He noticed an Absol trainer was eyeing his Garchomp. This made him realize a few others were as well remarking on Garchomp's strong showing and its incredible jump.
