Charmander's claw cuts through Poulpentrique's left side, drawing blood and clipping her pelvic fin. She's still built more for offense than defense. So...
"-- let's make this one count. Fire a water gun full-blast at its tail; you've already got a lock on the target."
The water doused Charmander hard. Rick was starting to get nervous, having two of his pokemon being bested in battle so far. He tosses out Squirtle's pokeball and calls out, "Disorient it with a bubble spray!" Squirtle frothed at the mouth as it created a storm surge of bubbles everywhere, almost like someone had emptied a bucket of laundry detergent in a high-speed mixer. Bubbles were everywhere.
The bubbles hardly do a thing to Poulpentrique; if anything, they soothe the wounds she sustained against Charmander. However, there's not a thing she can do in response -- and Squirtle would best her in hand-to-fin combat. Fritz presses the contact on Poulpentrique's Poke Ball and tosses it into the air, removing her from the battle. "That's it for you, I'm afraid. Now, let's let Farolla have a go at it."
Conscious of Farolla's weakened state from her own battle against Bulbasaur, Fritz uses a Potion on her and waits for Squirtle's next move.
There was a whistling sound from the other side of the bubbles, and Squirtle launched from the cloud right toward the Mareep that had just entered the fray. (Tackle)
The Mareep's intimidation tactics worked, and the Squirtle startd to back into the bubbles. "Withdraw, Squirtle! It's our only chance!" Squirtle tucked itself neatly into its shell once it reached the safety of the bubble cloud.
Fritz smiles: the air around Squirtle is so bubble-filled that he isn't sure the defensive posture will do a thing. "Shock him, Farolla. Just a plain and simple shock."
The electricity crackled through the bubbles and assaulted the Squirtle from just about every conceivable angle. It was clear the battle was finally over, and Rick disheartedly withdrew his last pokemon from the battle. "I guess that's it, then. Take this."
Congratulations, you defeated PokeManiac Rick! Farolla gains +8 exp, Poulpentrique gains +4 experience, and you receive $400.
Once your there you start looking for trainers and after a little searching you find...
What do you do?
Fritz continues southward and finds the landscape more and more barren with each step: the visually stunning dichotomy of blue stria and red scoria isn't enough to recompense for the dry air ("sorry, Poulpentrique") and sparse vegetation ("sorry, Farolla"). So imagine his surprise when he finds a picnicker going about her day square in the middle of these badlands!
"Hullo!" he greets the lady with a smile and slight bow, "May I have the pleasure of joining you? For either a picnic or a Pᴏᴋᴇᴍᴏɴ Bᴀᴛᴛʟᴇ, of course. I'm in the mood for both, but I'd prefer the battle myself."
"Oh, hello there! I'd love to battle, come on out Pikachu!" SHe tossed a pokeball out, and springing forth came a Pikachu with electricity arcing across its cheeks.
How fitting! A day after I battle the starter trio I battle a Pikachu!
Fritz kneels down and addresses Poulpentrique and Farolla in a low voice. "Okay: with no offense to either of you, neither one of you can do this alone. Poulpentrique, your water gun will damage it normally, but you can only take one shock before I call you back. And Farolla, you'll force Pikachu into a electricity-free physical battle, but that's hardly your strong suit. So," he pauses with a deep breath, "who's first?" Remoraid starts flopping up and down in excitement as the question is just leaving his lips, and Fritz figures her to be in a gamesome or competitive mood, despite the overwhelming disadvantage she faces. "Well then, I leave it to you."
He stands up and faces the battlefield, directing Poulpentrique, "Get as close as you can and fire a water gun at it. Spend as much time aiming as you need, but we don't have enough time to lock onto it."
"Don't let it get that lock, Pikachu! Drop it!" Not wanting to waste any time, Jen and her Pikachu lead off with a blast of thundershock to try and take out the Remoraid before it can cause problems.
Just as the burst of electricity leaves Pikachu's cheeks, a stream of water leaves Poulpentrique's mouth; the water gun she had been preparing shoots at Pikachu like a dart.
Of course, a split second later, Poulpentrique is struck by a shock that leaves her dazed and damaged beyond Fritz's tolerance. "That's all for you," he says as he recalls her, "Farolla, the rest is yours."
Pikachu barrels into Farolla (insofar as a Pikachu can "barrel") and the Mareep stumbles backward while keeping her balance; Fritz nods in acknowledgment of the result. I ca'n't say this battle is going any differently than I expected. All I needed was one water gun from Poulpentrique and no large amount of damage from Pikachu's first attack -- and now Farolla and I can take control of the rest of the battle.
He cocks his head toward a concave rock exposure as he kneels beside Farolla, issuing the command, "Growl at it, and try to herd it toward that rock wall. If you can, good; if you can't, then back into the wall yourself. Either way, we can reduce Pikachu's speed advantage in closer quarters, and either way, we can start reducing its strength with your growling."
Farolla charges into battle with an intimidating growl (insofar as a Mareep can be "intimidating"), keeping the Pikachu in-between her and the rock face.
Pikachu was starting to slow as the battle became more close-quarters, but that didn't stop brute force. "Stir it up by getting underneath with your quick attack!" Pikachu dug in with its feet, and tried to wedge itself under Mareep and send it flying with a burst of speed.
With no chance to respond to the attack, Farolla is struck by the Pikachu on her underside, forcing her to rear up as the Pikachu drives her skyward. Standing on only her hind legs, Farolla stumbles three steps backward as her right hind leg loses its footing, but she regains her balance soon after. There's another advantage I can play into: Farolla can't match Pikachu's speed and power, but she's still larger and heavier. Now, do I keep on with this plan? He looks at Farolla. Having taken two hits, she isn't in her best condition; however, she seems to have enough strength to see the battle through.
"Farolla, keep growling -- keep driving it backward."
Farolla is caught off-guard by the same attack being used, and the Pikachu manages to lift her off the ground, plopping the Mareep onto her left side. But Farolla stands up from the ground in little pain, with pique in her eyes: her repeated growling has noticeably weakened the Pikachu. Fritz nods once again at the result. Well! She's rather aloof outside battle, but that growl of hers is mightier than I imagined. Now is the time to go on the offensive, and we'll see if it's still in any pain from Poulpentrique's water gun.
He points at the Pikachu and directs Farolla, "Now -- tackle it."
Pikachu took the hit, and rolled hard into the dirt. "Uh oh, we've got to end this fast. Pikachu, one more Slam should do it!" Jen called out, and Pikacho obliged with a last charge toward the Mareep. It used speed to its advantage, weaving back and forth before making the final lunge with its body.
A Pikachu's slam is less graceful than its quick attack; it's an all-or-nothing strike with a higher propensity for failure. As Jen's Pikachu puts all of its weight into the attack, Farolla shifts all of her weight to her front right leg -- and following that, while Farolla is toppled onto her right side by the slam, Pikachu stumbles past Farolla's left side as half the force of its attack is lost.
Both Pokemon stand up at the same time ("to the second! -- has the battle been this even?") as Fritz gives Farolla the command, "Tackle it again. And don't put as much weight into it as our dear friend Pikachu did."
Pikachu is hit by the tackle, and knocked aside again. Jen recalls it right after the motion stops. "I know when I'm beat . . . you did great Pikachu." She walks over to Fritz to shake hands and part ways.
Congrats, you defeated Picnicker Jen! Fritz earned $100. Poulpentrique and Farolla each receive +4 experience.
Once your there, you ask Dr. Caldwell if you can help in any way... She tells you "Well, we could use another pair of hands digging but other than that no..."
After talking to the Dr., you start looking for Pokemon and after a little searching you find...
What do you do?
After his conversation with Dr. Caldwell, Fritz -- and, more notably, Fritz's Pokemon -- rest at the excavation site for a while ("it's hardly a Pokemon center, but it'll pass as one for now").
Having nothing else to do for the moment, Fritz searches for Pokemon on the badlands and finds a Charmander -- which is to say, another Charmander -- walking cheerily along a rock path. "Poulpentrique, I imagine you know what to do here. Lock on to the tail and such. Ho-hum."
The smoke stings Fritz's eyes as he backs away from the screen, but he knows the proper course of action without even being able to see the battlefield. "Fire a water gun at the tail, Poulpentrique." Fritz laughs at the difference in skill between wild and trained Pokemon: would a trained Pokemon have tried to evade a Remoraid that has a perfect lock on it?
"-- let's make this one count. Fire a water gun full-blast at its tail; you've already got a lock on the target."
Conscious of Farolla's weakened state from her own battle against Bulbasaur, Fritz uses a Potion on her and waits for Squirtle's next move.
"No -- not yet. I want you on the giving end of a growl this time. Advance and move him back into the bubble cloud."
Congratulations, you defeated PokeManiac Rick! Farolla gains +8 exp, Poulpentrique gains +4 experience, and you receive $400.
