Tai shook his head. "There must be...something. This thing clearly wasn't sentient. Meaning there was someone pulling the strings."
David felt uneasy hearing that there was actually someone capable of using something so simple and turning it into a deadly weapon. Still he had to keep an air of confidence around the others, even though he was sure he was outclassed pretty well.
"Isn't that always the story of these things? There is someone out there that wants to keep something secret because it will lead to something bad for them and possibly the rest of us. Well I guess that means we're the ones who are going to have to find out if it doesn't end up killing all of us."
Cyouni lets out a short laugh. That's what anyone would say in this situation. Though he's more of a sycophant than most. Best to keep an eye on him. He opens his hand, and the blade vanishes, the spirit disappearing with it.
Moving up next to Tai and Kennar, the mage closes his eyes, extending his hand towards the remains of the orb. "If it was controlled by something, there must be some link to where it came from," he says slowly, his senses searching for the aforementioned link. Even if it wasn't sentient, it was sent here somehow. So if he can just find the link, he can trace it back to the origin.
"Not a bad idea," Zalara says. "If all of us attuned to red and black mana search for the link, we're bound to find it somewhere. Or at least we'll find a lot of places where it isn't. There's nothing to be gained from standing around and staring, anyhow."
She turns to Olid Turgun. "Want to make yourself useful? Reach out with your mind and see if you can sense the threads of black mana." With that, she closes her eyes and turns away, tapping into the red leyline.
Content that anything he would sense magically will be picked up by Kennar, the Wind Rider instead focused on his physical senses. As he approached the center of the rubble, he leaned low to the ground, concentrating on scents that may have come from before the battle.
Not gleaning any more useful information from the situation, Tai took mental note of the area. "We aren't getting anywhere here. Perhaps my contacts in the Selesnya or Boros guilds might be able to help. Unless someone has a different idea?"
OOC: There are no reasonably large chunks of the orb. It was hollow and made of something transparent and glass-like. It shattered into a milion pieces. It's more or less just little bits of powder now.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Olid nods at Xerion, and turns back to the rubble. "Judging by the gathering of mages here, no one knows what happened yet. I was hoping to meet with a representative and get signed up today."
His shrouded face tilts. He looks back at Xerion. "Certainly they'll rebuild it if their leadership survived, though, right?"
His voice carries a worried tone on it.
David stood next to Zalara and nodded at her suggestion for some of the mages to connect to their leyline. He placed his hand on her shoulder before he spoke, careful not to disturb the shaman.
"Would it be easier if we held hands or circled around something that represents the mana we use? Like a fire for those of us attuned to the red leyline and a skeleton for those that are of the black? Something that will help strengthen the bond with the leylines and make our search easier?"
As Deth process this new information, he decides the mages are friendly, and should be trusted. In an attempt to get more information he asks, "Was anyone here when the orb appeared?"

Time flys like an arrow. Fruit flys like a banana.
At about this point, Korlash shows up. It seems that they had been getting help from the other leaders of the houses, as just about every leader is with him. They look at the wreckage of the house, some of them for the first time, and then at the new pixie dust that's settled across it. Some look thoughtful. Most look annoyed.
Mar, who had up to now been standing quietly off to the side and probing at the site the orb appeared at to try and sense any lingering connections, moves closer to where the leaders are so that he can better hear whatever it is they are about to say. Along the way, he scoops a small amount of the dust caused by the orb's demise into a pocket in the exterior of his bag, just in case it could come in handy someday, and answers the just asked question on his way. "Most of us were. As I recall, it appeared with a bang, foreshadowed by a rising pain. "
Hearing the footsteps behind him, Cyouni opens his eyes and turns his head to appraise the new arrivals. That the house leaders are here doesn't particularly surprise him - he's only surprised by the fact that they weren't here earlier, given an incident of this magnitude.
The mage straightens from his crouch, offering a brief nod of respect to his house leader. "Lord Korlash. Do you know who's behind this?" His gesture takes in the ruins, the remains of the orb, and the untouched buildings that surround the area.
Olid sees the group, and the reverence paid it. They have to be the house leaders. He takes the direct approach. "Sirs, Are you here to survey the rubble? I myself had come to join the Black House, but it seems I had arrived a bit late."
He winces on the inside as he says this. Direct in approach and greeting the leaders, but his reference to his attempt to join seemed a bit lost in the words he spoke.
Olid is simply stared at for a moment before he's outright ignored. At least, for the time being. Perhaps this isn't the time for such a request.
Each of the leaders survey the wreckage of the house.
Korlash: "There is very little to go on. There were several individuals that came with intent to wreak havoc on us. Upon the destruction of the house, and an attempt on the lives of its masters, they fled. They were followed until they opened multiple planar portals--"
At this point another voice pops up.
Saffi: "To unknown planes!"
Korlash: "Yes, to unknown planes. We intend to--"
Saffi: "I was able to keep them open, so we're going to follow them!"
Korlash stares at Saffi for a moment before nodding, "Which means--"
Saffi: "And by 'we' we mean 'you'!"
There's a short argument between the two of them that follows.
Crovax turns to Tai before looking at the wreckage. "The house masters were powerless to stop this. I do not believe there is much that you could have done if they ere so impotent."
The viashino listens to the black mage and the human girl with scarcely veiled annoyance. It is clear he is waiting to hear what Tahngarth and Fumiko have to say on the matter.
"Perhaps," Olid remarks, mostly to himself. "They are just too busy."
He hovers about the leaders for a few moments, then, feeling quite useless and ignored, sets about being industrious and moving pieces of rubble to the side, trying to clear out at least a small area.
Xerion listens intently to the leaders and nodded. Looking towards the newcomer and asked. "Well, ready for your first mission around here?" he asked him.
Olid picks up a piece of rubble, turns to toss it, then turns back to the leaders as he hears that. "All of us?"
He throws the rubble into the pile he only just started, and straightens up. His dark robes ripple as he does so. "I'm not even a member of the house, sirs. But if you ask, I will help in any way I can."
Mar nods assent and waits for the inevitable formation of the groups - whether established by group consensus or the necessities of the destinations or the assignations of the leaders.

"I would assume so. I would hope the House was able to evacuate before...this." He said to Olid, gesturing to the wreckage.
