"Hm..." Felix says thoughtfully. "Yes, sparring is a good way to demonstrate technique. We don't have an arena, but there is plenty of clear land around."
"The town square is one option, though if a stray spell were to hit a building it could cause damage. Just outside of town might be the best option."
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Felix leads Vorin to a relatively level patch of sand just outside town, several dozen yards from the nearest buildings.
He walks a few yards from Vorin, then turns to face him. "Alright then. No killing. Pull any lethal spells. Other than that, do what you must to win."
OOC: This duel will have the same rules as an arena duel. Life totals are set to 15. If you cause damage that would cause Felix to drop to 0 or less life, he dies and you're in all kinds of trouble.

"D-don't hold back" Vorin stuttered at first, but said the rest of the phrase with confidence.

Vorin reached for his satchel and paused for a second before gathering his mana, trying to recount everything Felix had just told him, but then he stopped himself. He remembered to be impulsive and without missing a beat instinctively drew upon some red mana. Hyper-vigilant of himself, he notice that as he gathered the mana, he pulled his hands into his body and drew his elbows into his sides as he drew upon the mana. He felt the red mana rushing through his body and began to understand what Felix was saying. Green mana is impulsive, and spreads through the body like a forest, slowly and gradually, but the red mana rushes through his body like a wildfire.
Realizing he had been pausing for a few seconds, and that Felix was standing there waiting, he quickly grabbed a gem from his satchel, extended his arm fully, and conjured a small goblin at his side.
As the mana was released, Vorin winced slightly, but tried to ignore any pain he was feeling, to prove his strength.
The goblin clearly recognized Felix from the earlier encounter in the desert, which Vorin had all but repressed, and charged Felix immediately.

Vorin became slightly disappointed that Felix wasn't gathering any red mana, but he passed this off momentarily, confident that red mana would come.
Seeing the whipping winds of the desert, Vorin gathered up the energy from the oasis to protect his summons from any coming storms. The relief from red mana was very soothing to Vorin.
Without exerting much more energy, Vorin summoned another goblin. The goblins started momentarily at each other, then charged immediately towards Felix.
There is a sudden red flash, the smell of burning hair, and Felix hurls a bolt of electricity at one of the attacking goblins. He ignores the other goblin as its axe strikes him a second time.
After the goblin strikes, the sands around Felix's feet swirl into a small funnel and whip around the goblin. Vorin's desert-calming mana prevents the goblin's death, which causes Felix to smile slightly.
At Felix's feet, the sand of the desert glows red-hot as Felix draws in red mana. The burning sand dies down somewhat as Felix waves his hand. The sand swirls into a blinding wall for a moment, and when it dies down a red-robed figure stands before its summoner.
OOC: Felix plays a mountain, then casts Grim Lavamancer. Your turn.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Vorin is shocked as Felix seems to gather red mana from nowhere, but smiles at the familiar spell he casts.
Ignoring the lavamancer, Vorin conjures some more red mana to match that of Felix. He extends his arms, and without thinking, releases the mana to summon two more goblins. The three goblins see the charred remains of their friend, and they charge directly at Felix.
Again Felix channels the spirit of the red-aligned simian and a bolt of electricity flashes to one of the attacking goblins. And again Felix is struck by the goblins. They each leave a bloody slash mark on him and he winces in pain.
The whirling sands around Felix's feet grow more intense and glow brighter with fire. Felix smiles at Vorin, then bows to him indicating he should make his next move.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Vorin gathers more red mana into his body and sustains it. As the mana floods through his veins, his core begins to tense up. His face scrunches up, but he quickly regains his composure.
The two remaining goblins are angered by the death of other two and look at Vorin to charge once more. Vorin orders them to stay back and guard him, as he doesn't want them to be annihilated like the others. Plus, as his body was becoming weaker with pain from the red mana every second, he did not want to be unprotected. The goblins appear to ignore this order at first, but Vorin reaches out and physically stop them from charging. They begrudgingly stay behind.
OOC: We'll certainly be able to. The WPLs are still talking, and this won't last except for another few rounds of fighting. Of course, if my computer breaks again it might take a little longer.
Felix smiles as the sand around his feet grows ever hotter. "Work on your control. The goblins respond to your emotions. Creatures of red mana respond more powerfully to the emotional state of their summoner than any others. Correspondingly, they are harder to command with words."
A small spark of his power drifts into his lavamancer, who then flings a molten spray at Vorin.
With his remaining mana, Felix extends his hand and a sudden explosion of fire tears through the area, incinerating every creature currently summoned.
OOC: Felix plays a mountain, activates Grim Lavamancer to deal 2 damage to Vorin, then casts Pyroclasm to wipe the board
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Vorin watched the goblins fry and felt somewhat indifferent. They had done their duty and given him just enough time. He knew what he had to do, and was somewhat surprised that Felix hadn't beaten him too it. Red mana was about sudden eruptions of power and uncontrollable energy...Vorin just wasn't sure if his body would be able to handle it.
As Felix attacked Vorin's goblins, Vorin prepared an attack of his own. He shot a large incinerating blast at Felix, which drained his strength. Before he had a chance to recover, he took out a different gem from his satchel and attacked Felix with a small blast of electricity.
(EOT: Incinerate and Shock. You=6)
Suddenly, all of Vorin's mana returned to him, and Felix was left weak and completely exposed. Vorin breathed deeply and gathered more mana into his body. He began to prepare another incinerating spell in each hand. As mana was draining, he remembered what Felix said about how the mana could be eating him up inside. He felt the muscles in his arm contract tightly. He grounded himself with the blast in his hand, suddenly unable to move. He paused to think, but then realized he had paused and fired the blasts at Felix without another second of hesitation. As the mana left his body he felt a sudden feeling of relief, but then collapsed and fell to one knee, still conscious.
(Untap, play Mountain, cast Incinerate x2. Game?)
Felix is blasted back at the twin waves of powerful fire magic. He manages to turn his landing into a roll and ends up on his back in the sand. He stands and nods to Vorin.
"Well done. But next time, don't hold back to see what your opponent does. I had a spell that would have ended the fight earlier in my favor, but I needed to see what you would do."
"When you held your goblins back from attacking, you had already lost. If I had used my most powerful spell, the duel would have ended then. You cannot hold back. Red magic is offensive in nature. Throw your spells at your enemy as quickly as you can cast them, or your momentum will fail and the opponent will have the edge."
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
OOC: If you're wondering why I held the goblins back, I was worried there was going to be 4x Lightning Bolt, 1 Shock with the 5 mana (2 my turn, 3 yours) you had, and I didn't want the Lavamancer to come in for one and kill me.
From one knee, Vorin couldn't move a muscle. He was fortunate to be conscious. His head was buzzing and he felt as if there was no energy in his body at all. There was a loud buzzing in his head. After about 30 seconds, he managed to stand up woozily and shook his head gently until the buzzing stopped. He was clearly standing gingerly and looked like he might collapse any second.
Felix may be an expert in red mana, but Vorin could not take this advice to heart. His tribe of elves were known for being ruthless, but not because they are excessive. The elves are precise and exact in their attacks, and then they leave. Unnecessary over-extension could be fatal, and Vorin knew it.
As he recovered, he look over at Felix with a great deal of pride. Felix, one who he had revered as an extremely powerful mage stood in front of Vorin, defeated by a novice. He saw the scratches and minor burns on his opponent and simply lost respect. Vorin had walked into this fight ready to lose and learn something, but Felix held back, even when Vorin asked him not too. His information was beyond useful, but clearly this man could teach him nothing more about his condition. In his mind, Felix became an eyeblight.
Vorin finally spoke up after gaining some of his energy back. Though Felix seemed inferior now, his tone did not change. The ability to deceive eyeblights was extremely important in the training of young elves, so Vorin sounded completely sincere. "Thank you for taking the time to train with me. I really should return to meet up with my partner before I go..." He paused, realizing he might be able to gain something out of the situation he was in. "However, I would love to learn to do this spell you were talking about a moment ago. I need some new, powerful tricks. Can you teach me?"
If Felix detects the change in Vorin's demeanor, he doesn't say anything. "This spell requires large amounts of mana to use. For someone of your... condition, it could be fatal if you draw in too much."
"And, this spell is not powerful on its own. You must first create a situation in which you can harness more mana than you normally would have. You will have to seek out those kinds of spells for yourself."
He reaches into his satchel, and hands Vorin a single, dimly glowing red gem. "Here. Use it wisely."
OOC: Vorin gains a gem with 1x cast of Ghitu Fire. Returning to Saffi will get you the rest of your reward.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
"Thank you for everything. I must return to Estark now, but I'm sure we will meet again. Good luck with those bandits" he said receiving the gem. He wanted to try out the new spell, but he didn't dare gathering more mana in his current state. He grabbed the remaining Ornithopter scroll in his satchel, summoned the thopter.
Fortunately, he remembered how to fly the thing without watching Kassim. He got on, happy to have a nice long flight to rest his body.
OOC: Assuming nothing happens, I will continue by posting in Saffi and Hans.
