If this means I never have to watch another clip of the Newsening, thats a good thing.
It sucks that anyone gets fired, but I have to agree with you there. The newsening is horrible.

If only there were a way to not view something we didn't want to. Something like a remote control only for the computer. Alas we have no such thing and are thus forced to watch everything that comes by.
SCG is really shaking things up. By shaking, I really mean ****ing.
Seriously. They have been making some very strange choices over there lately. I know they don't owe the community any explanations for how they choose to run their business but it does make me lose faith in them as a brand.

So jacking up prices is cool, but cutting staff is crossing the line?

Their prices are what they are. I don't actually buy singles from them so that part of the company doesn't concern me much. I know there is a lot of debate about but I try to stay out of it. What I don't understand is the firing of Lauren Lee, canceling their PT sponsorship and now this.

Hell yes they owe the community an explanation! SCG would still be a tiny local games store in Virginia if it wasn't for the MTG community!
That said, I have always been very satisfied in them as a business, having been to an SCG Open and ordered from them more than once. I'm sure they had a good reason for firing Reuben, and I hope they share it with the community soon.

I think this is completely unrelated to SCG not chosing to renew their sponsorship (I don't think they are "cleaning house"); however, the team seems like the kind of thing that someone (Reuben) felt very passionately about which lead to some kind of exchange which could result in a termination.
So jacking up prices is cool, but cutting staff is crossing the line?
They have a few businesses, lots of people don't pay their prices for cards but are interested in their content. Reuben is part of their content side of things. They just lost several writers to CFB, they got rid of above the curve a few months back, Reuben is gone, and some other things have happened. Their content is on quite a bit of a decline.
I wish they would fire whoever chooses the feature matches. I feel like each week for the Legacy Open they pick one deck, only show that on camera for the swiss and then, when top 8 hits and you see only one person playing the deck of the week, they show that deck until it gets knocked out. It makes me want to just not even bother with the stream anymore.
Always sad to see someone lose their job. I hope he finds something comparable financially soon, but I won't miss him from MTG coverage. He wasn't good.

It's their strategy to sell cards... like if they just buylisted a load of stuff for Stoneblade (Aka raising prices to $35) they will feature that deck the whole time and hope it wins so people want to build it. If they just bought 50 S&T from a GP, you bet they will feature sneak and show... i mean I can't blame them it's smart business... there's a reason why Nike Pays Lebron to wear certain things they wanna sell...
Yeah I am not really sad to see him go (except for the fact he's a human being who got fired, which always sucks), I really didn't like him at all.
SCG may be downsizing because certain projects or whatever may not be producing increased sales as they expect, or possibly some people want to be paid more, and SCG may not be willing to pay more.
I am sure there is no shortage of MTG players who would be willing to write for SCG, and I am sure SCG will find themselves new writers and coverage people.

It makes sense from a business standpoint, perhaps, but it's not exactly giving the audience what they want. And the difference with NBA, NFL, etc. is that people are still able to see a variety of players/teams/styles regardless of product placement.
With SCG, they'll only stream what they want to sell. It'd be more akin to Nike buying out the NBA and refusing to broadcast games that don't prominently feature their products.

This. I barely watched the Newsening, but it seemed pretty lame.

Exactly. And I don't begrudge them that. I still think it's kinda backwards thinking to say "SCG can manipulate the market and rip people off all they want, but they have no right to fire their employees". Like, which of those two things is more likely to affect players directly? Which of those things is actually detrimental to the average player?

I got say...well that I wasn't a fan or foe for Rueben in regards of him getting fired....
***And I could care less why or how SCG makes their money!!!..... (I know there is a ton of SCG hate out there, but I don't get paranoid conspiracy thumpers 'buyout', shill folks..)
But I will say I have really appreciated all the coverage SCG does for their Opens and I actually look forward to reading/watching all the content on SCG website....I certainly hope they have benefited from all they have put into their 'marketing', but from my selfish perspective- so have I(as no one in this MTG has done it better thus far from a content IMO...they have set the high water mark)!... This all stuff Wizards should have been doing....but was either incapable or lack of vision....
I also hope, the changes SCG is doing is for the best...with so many Pro's 'leaving' (rueben, reid, Gerry T...etc..)...I am again selfishly just wanting more high level content...

I fully expect that content will be roughly the same level, maybe slightly better.

Did all their writers jump ship or did they just take the better sponsorship deal from CFB for the PT? For some reason I didn't get the impression it would effect SCG's weekly articles.

From what I've read most of the writers will stay the same. A few on CFB's team will even still do articles for SCG.

1. As you say, the former Team SCG got a better sponsorship offer from CFB than what SCG offered, so they are now sponsored by CFB for the Tour. SCG will not be sponsoring a team for the forseeable future.
2. Tom Martell is back doing articles/videos for CFB already. Reid Duke, Huey Jensen, and Matt Costa are also jumping from SCG Premium to CFB for articles and videos. Reid's "Farewell" article was today. Zvi Mowshowitz and Jon Finkel will now do occasional CFB articles instead of occasional SCG articles.
3. Other SCG writers (Sam Black, Brad Nelson, Pat Chapin, etc.) are still writing for SCG. Brian Kibler has always been on Team CFB and written for SCG, and continues to do so.
