Announcement just made: Players under the Age of 18 are not allowed to play at #gpvienna
Quote from TheCardNexus »
What on earth. WHY? And why was that JUST announced?
Quote from JasonC2334 »
Austrian authorities decided this shortly before grinders started
To say that this is pretty awkward is putting it mildly - if the local authorities don't allow people under 18 to compete in such events, they should have figured this out before the Friday of the GP. In any case, I hope (and expect) that the players under 18 who went to Vienna will be sufficiently reimbursed
This is utter nonsense. Obviously, WoTC would have moved the event if they'd known about this beforehand. Instead, they were ambushed with it at the last second? That's just not right.
Well... I'm guessing this may be the last major event in Austria.

No idea. All I know I've found on Twitter. I first saw the rumor a couple of hours ago, but I wasn't sold on the story until they posted the image I included in the first post. I'd expect an announcement from WotC on the matter before long, though.
Edit: but yeah, I don't expect there to be major events in Austria for a while after this, just like with Germany. Not sure what'll happen with the one already scheduled for next year though.
Well you can expect a lack of events in any austrian city due to this, this was just a poor decision which may result in Austrian magic being shelved for a while by wizards.
Who exactly is making this requirement?
what are they explanations?
I'm assuming the same reason they have issues in Germany, they consider MTG gambling, and the possibly the casinos got involved.
Thing is though, I am starting to wonder if this is going to be a EU thing in general. I mean usually once Belgium and Germany do something like this, the other EU countries are not far behind.
The largest Pokémon tournaments are held in Germany and that's pretty much 90% under 18.
With regards to the topic of gaming and children, including TCGs/Casino cards, germany is very prudish. Lots and lots of video games get harsh ratings/have to be edited before they are allowed to be sold on the German market. The country is rather old-fashioned when it comes to these things and games are a quick blame for a lot of things thats wrong with the young.
Some places consider the "draft" aspect of MTG to be the reasons its gambling. Pokémon doesn't have draft and technically yugioh doesn't have an official draft setup. But Mtg does and its a prime format so the whole game is labeled.
Don't expect to see mtg here again for 10+ years. unless the old guard is replaced or wotc finds out what is exactly making them label it and try to abide to it. Which I don't think will happen.

Also, Pokemon World Championships give out scholarships, not actual cash. I'm sure that has something to do with it.

Yup The prizes have been Items, product, and scholarships. But Makes me wonder if someone wins and doesn't want the scholarship(already did schooling).

Probably get some product or some rare card that just so happens to be worth money.

Well, I guess that makes three out of three German speaking countries that won't have GPs anymore in the future (Germany because authorities don't allow cash prices, Austria because of this, and Switzerland because its friggin expensive ;))
That kinda sucks, I guess. Not that I am personally affected by that -- I'd take a GP in France every time over one in Austria, but that is still just really awful. Especially now for this very GP. I am sure many dreams are being crushed right now by this. So this is both unfortunate in the short-term and in the long-term

Imagine having travelled, being under 18, and now being able to not play in the GP now. I'd probably just find some other event somewhere to play but my immediate response would be anger.

That has to be a small number of people, though. I know that as hardcore as I am playing magic, I'd never fly a plane or drive more than 300 miles to a magic event. I was even less likely to as an 18 year old.
I think the more likely scenario is you are under 18 (even worse if you miss the mark by days or months), and you live in Vienna or within 50 miles, and this is the first major magic event and you aren't allowed to play in it. That would suck.
Apparently the local authorities turned up yesterday and imposed the limit. A local by-law by the sound of it.
WotC and the TO aren't gonna come out of this looking good. I can understand missing some small regulation, but checking whether there are limits on who can participate seems like its would be pretty basic.
While I don't know what happened with this event, a part of the issue is that often it's not possible to know in advance what limits will be enforced, and local authorities can and sometimes do change their minds last-minute. And often that is something an organizer simply can't plan for or work around until it happens.
I know of a few places that are already considered by larger organizers to be too risky for large cash-prize tournaments due to inability to get reliable clarity from local authorities in advance. It will be sad for German-speaking Magic if Austria has to join that list.
I don't think so, what they said was that they wanted to study it before giving the OK, which implies that they haven't studied it yet.
Hmm, okay. That definitely seems overly cautious then. But it sounds like they're a bit more skeptical in Austria and Germany when it comes to games than in most other countries.

Actually Germany was a lot more concrete in their case. In Germany's case, it was running afoul of the new gambling regulation laws that were passed literally the MONTH before the GP started, and they ruled that Magic was a game of chance, thus no cash payouts allowed. Sadly at that point the next German GP was already scheduled and locked in, so they had no real chance to move it

Interesting comment about gambling. Are there age restrictions on other 'card' games as in poker?

Not even a mention on the official event coverage page. Pretty disappointing.
