I agree! I have a good job and still cannot afford 30 boxes! I bought 1 box and that is being used for the Private Sealed event I am hosting for my birthday!
We are hosting a private sealed event this Friday. Two boxes have been purchased. It sounds like the chances of us getting a hidden treasure are pretty small.
Although they probaly are getting that reported is just soo very unlikely. If its true that the treasures are 1 in 20 cases then its every 720 packs you might get one. That's one of every 720 intro decks might have one.
I think you mean 1 in 20 boxes, since 1 in 20 cases would be insanely rare..;-)
I am disappointed to say that I finished opening my 30th box and got no treasure cards.
However my friend opened 240 boxes and reports 7 treasure cards. He claims nothing super however out of them.
For those of you trying to figure the odds.
Good luck,
Brian Achilles
That has to be some kind of typo. How the hell could you even open 240 boxes? Your hands would be freakin numb by then. What, does he want 10 playsets of everything? And what a waste, if you're going to open packs, shouldn't they be drafted? Just took the fun out of it. Maybe you mean 240 packs?
If you're doing it just to sell singles, it's still a waste of packs.

Between my ebay sales and 4 store fronts just to stock shelves so far we have opened 60 cases thats 360 boxes 12,960 packs of m10 I preddict by the time we are done with Zendikar come February or whenever the next set ships we will have opened the same of Zendikar so far on Zendikar 25 cases.
Any everyone of them could easily be bought by some randomn kid who doesn't know its value. (Its not like stores, distributors, and the average player makes a habit of cracking intros)
And this makes for sad pandas.
Imagine some kid who is new to the game and he opens an Intro pack and for the sake of argument he gets a Bazaar of Baghdad. He is going to look at that card and think it is the junkiest card he has ever seen. He is also going to be very confused about why a card with a non-Zendikar expansion symbol is in his pack.
The only thing that is worse than one of his "friends" ripping him off to trade for it is him thinking that it is some kind of fake and tossing it like we all toss those "how to play" inserts. I wonder if any new players have tossed their "priceless treasures" cause they do not understand what that card is doing there so out of context. Hopefully they know enough about the treasures to at least know they found something worth checking on the intarweb.
As for WotC acknowledging it, from what i understand, acknowledging it may require certain legal duties (like release of odds, similar to gambling and chase cards in sports packs) Either way, they're silent. I don't think it would have made a difference if MaRo put it in his article for random kids not knowing. If you read anything online, you know by now.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
WotC did go out an dpurchase these. One of the WotC folks was at the large Houston PR and confirmed this fact. There have also been other sources that had similar confirmed information.
Additionally, what you should be asking yourself is: "If WotC had these, why would they have waited until now to do somethin glike this?"
Why haven't there been more "Win-a-Mox" events as PT and GP side events?
From time to time, they have past employees and business partners that come forward with old product and those have been used for events. If I'm not mistaken that's where some of the old Antiquities and Legends booster boxes came from once upon a time.
They would have found many more ways to do things with things if the'd had them already.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Enough said.
Think about it. Nicol Bolas came back, Mythic Rares?
They will do anything they can to get people buying box after box.

yeah... highest attendance numbers in magic history, highest box sells in history, highest singles sells by the biggest companies, and in 3 years they doubled the number of DCI tournaments ever made... bad times man, bad times.

I'd agree, I recently (about 9 months ago) got back into playing MTG after a four or five year break, and wow, times have changed. We were lucky to see 10-12 players for FNM at our local stores in '04-'05, now on a "slow" night its 30-40. The online community is many times more robust than it used to be. Vintage card values have only gone up in that time and most cycled-out cards have lost only a fraction of their value, less than most (I'd wager) expected. I think MTG as a whole isn't without its problems -- what competitive sport isn't? -- but as far as I can tell it is doing alright, even in a down economy.
Regarding Zendikar, I opened my first two boxes today, no treasures, no Cobras, but seven fetches and a decent selection of other good cards. Three foil rares, one of which was a Mindbreak Trap. I wasn't too disappointed.
Earlier comments about "does the average player even realize what these treasures are" were interesting. While I think in general the inclusion of old cards was a great sales-boosting move on Wizards' part, it is difficult to separate that from the fact that this is a very strong, very playable set. If Zendikar were a modern-day Fallen Empires, meaning very underpowered and uninteresting in the current metagame, would treasures be driving the sales so high? No, I don't think so. Taking that into account, I am really curious as to exactly who Wizards was targeting with this promotion, especially given that they won't publicly talk about it. Consider:
- Vintage players won't buy Zendikar packs hoping to boost their collections, in fact they probably aren't buying packs at all.
- Standard/competitive players will buy and draft Zendikar anyway.
- Casual players will buy whatever the current set is, but will generally buy a rather fixed amount of it
- New players have no concept of Vintage cards other than what they might fetch on eBay, and I doubt it would influence their decision to purchase Zendikar
So really, I think the treasures are more of a curiosity than anything, maybe as an experiment or a veiled "reward" from Wizards, but not a serious marketing campaign in and of itself. If it were done specifically to drive sales, Wizards would be shooting themselves in the foot by not talking about it. I think Zendikar is selling first and foremost on its own merit, and maybe a tiny bit more due to this.
I wasn't here back then but how was it debated when WoTC put basic lands in boosters?
It was for Shards of Alara (just a year ago), when through market research they realized that new players had trouble getting basic lands. From my experience, this is both very true and very frustrating, but I don't get why they were so smart that they discontinued Tournament Packs. Sometimes they make the opposite of sense.
Opened in Rochester, NY (in a case shipped to me by a vendor from Florida):
Revised Edition Bayou, EX
Had been inserted into the pack upside-down
This is the 15th box I've opened, and with 4 fetches, Day of Judgment, Sorin, Nissa, and two full-art land foils, I can't complain about the rest of the box either. Somehow, it seems appropriate to get Verdant Catacombs in the same box as Bayou.
